Ruiz was an old, worn out, plodding fighter who was an easy target. Hayes was a younger, dirty fighter who took advantage of poor refereeing. That many hard punches to the back of the head damages the equilibrium. An honest and better referee would have disqualified Hayes. This obviously was the ugly side of corrupt professional boxing.

This was John Ruiz's last fight and he was predictably beaten black and blue by a much younger, but very dirty David Haye. A sad ending for a man, who, in his prime, went 1-1-1 against a slightly over the hill Evander Holyfield. Haye was a top notch cruiserweight champion, one of best of all time actually, but he was by no means a great heavyweight champion. He was exposed by Wladimir Klitchko a couple of years after the Ruiz fight and then ended up twice losing to Tony Bellow, which forced him into retirement. Haye could fight, but he was undoubtedly one of the poorer heavyweight champions of recent years. If he had campaigned at heavyweight in the 1970s, he would not have featured in the top 20, let alone top 10.🥊

@@TomAustinIII Haye was a dangerous fighter but he was much more successful and effective at cruiserweight than at heavyweight. Wladimer Klitchko took Haye to school over 10 years ago and the British fighter never recovered properly from that one sided loss. He was not in Klitchko's class. Remember too, that Haye was stopped by veteran fighter Carl Thompson in a cruiserweight bout back in 2004. Sure, Haye had some good wins in his career but he also suffered some bad losses and ended his career with two consecutive defeats to Tony Bellow who was no heavyweight. Haye was an excellent cruiserweight champion but a very ordinary heavyweight belt holder who had a short title reign in the 200 pound plus division.
