John Singer Sargent became one of the most revered artists of his time, not only for his portrait work but indeed for all-around prodigious art. Born in Florence, Italy from American Parentage but living mostly in Europe painting anything from Royalty to workers in the quarries. But his abilities as a Watercolorist are exceptional and the fleeting light he was able to paint.

Between Sargent, Sorolla and Turner, with more than a quick nod to Winslow Homer, the art of watercolor painting and painting light n watercolor is etched in stone with these artists. Can't get enough of these masters. And this channel has done so much to dive deep into the art form. Thanks as always to such a fine channel. Bravo!

I continue to be grateful for this series of educational and revealing videos. I commend them to my artist friends, including photographers who, like me, never cease to draw our inspiration (no pun intended) from drawing, painting, music, and other the classical arts. As Jonathan Richardson said in his 1715 Treatise on the Theory of Painting, "The outlines, and airs of the best antique, with the best coloring of the moderns united would do this; but more yet than this is not impossible. And this more should be attempted."

When I was studying art history and saw all those French, Italian,Spanish names. I avoided English named artists thinking them inferior to the others, but when one of my friends showed me paintings by Turner, Constable, Gainsborough and also Homer, and O’keefe. I thought hang on a minute these are also masters. When I saw Sargent I thought an American with three names how stupid. However I was wrong. Sargent is indeed an amazing artist and a master like the others. He might not be a Caravaggio but no one but a handful are!

I've been a rabid fan of Sargent since the 1970s or early 80's when an exhibition came to Detroit. Since then I have indulged my interest whenever the opportunity arose. When i first saw this video pop up on my youtube feed I was a little jaded about having to endure "more of the same," but I was pleasantly surprised.. You even showed some works I was not familiar with. Thank you!

John Singer Sargent was a very great artist...both as a society portrait painter, an observer of ordinary working people and capturing the essence of a place in landscapes in oil or watercolour.

I think the strength of the watercolor medium is it's fleeting immediacy, you get one chance, no corrections, and a different translation and awareness of the light. With oils the study can be more exacting, more able to correct the vision, or understand the proceeding intent. Sargent was a master truly of both, each as valid as the other.

I would loved to hear Sargent play the piano. So many things written about how well he played. The mention of him improvising through melodies tells me he was probably quite impressive.

What a genius artist, so skilled in suggesting reality and immense detail with so few strokes. The handling of contrasting light and colour is absolutely brilliant. I wish I could draw and paint like Sargent. Thanks for posting.
