John Stanley - from a practice session in 1757 - Mr Bellicanta: harpsichord, Dr Swain: flute

Now and then I travel to London to play music with my friend Dr Swain. Recently we have been looking at John Stanley's 'solos for German flute or violin' op. 4. This is the 1st movement, Adagio, of Solo II. Stanley (1712-1786) wrote some charming music that we are having great delight in exploring.
This is a video that was not recorded with the intention of publishing it. However, I enjoyed so much the result that I have decided to share it with you.
This was the first take of the piece in the afternoon. It is a great example of spontaneous domestic music making and how delightful it can be! Without seeking perfection nor concerned about making 'mistakes', whatever, just as it comes.. and one feels good straight afterwards.
In 1757.. 🙃.. this would have been a common scene in London.. obviously followed by a good cup of tea ☕taking life more Adagio.. truly so!

"Taking life more adagio" - I do agree, and I'm happy to benefit calm and beautiful moments, thanks to your decision. Sometimes I prefer domestic music-rehearsal (not only as a listener but also as a performer myself) to perfect recording. It is more natural and shows real love for music: music for its own sake. Bravi for both of you, and I hope you'll upload more moments like that.

Thank you for listening! Everything gets faster and faster in our world. I believe that a huge leap happened with the industrial revolution in the 19th century and ten fold that in the last 50 years... It's nice to tune in to a world that, in spite of all it troubles, still maintained a more human dimension to daily life.

I started listening to Stanley recently and I am loving it Pretty unusual to see a non solo harpsichord video, but a pleasant surprise :)

There are Stanley's Voluntaries for solo keyboard, namely for organ but work well on harpsichord and clavichord.
