Some people loved listening to John, and some didn’t. However, nobody else did like John did. He definitely brought his own style to every game. There will never be anyone else like him “That’s baseball, Suzyn”

He's like Harry Caray, I don't like the Cubs, I was never his biggest fan, but damn that man loved the Cubs, he loved baseball, he loved Chicago. You gotta respect that. Just like everyone respects Sterling.

He was not warm and lovable like Mel Allen or Rizzutto, but he had a unique style that he seemed to develop himself and he definitely became the voice of the Yankees brand. He did it his way and it worked.

Picked him up on the air by the way to Rhode Island from MA. Loved his voice intonation. But hated when he cutoff Susan Waldyn mid sentence . That gal knows her baseball.

John Sterling has the best voice in the world for radio. And he's a natural talker, can easily converse in a 2 person radio booth. The newer ones today are the opposite; shouldn't be on radio at all, have annoying voices, use high register to make it worse, are chirpy, use cliche, cookie cutter delivery. They freeze at moments when they should be able to converse with partner in radio booth. Radio is not tv. It's a one on one medium.

Having a looooong time radio or TV guy isn't just cool but it's a connection to a generation of players and seasons before you started watching. They know stories and players from the past. Losing John isn't just losing the voice of the team, it's losing a connection to the Dynasty teams and even before.

Not to be mean but let’s face it, he was just an average broadcaster, and the sterling/waldman team was almost unlistenable.

Never thought he was as good as Mel Allen or Phil Rizzuto. He lasted a long time with his silly way of calling a game. His partner Susan is even more mediocre ! Who knows how long we'll have to put up with Michael Kay ? Just don't make base - ball announcers like they used to !
@louierocco1226

TBH, I've never been a Sterling fan. I always found him to be a bit pompous with an over-inflated opinion of his own intelligence, very similar to Kay. However, I wish him the best as he moves to this new chapter in his life.

John mostly did games and did not become the all wise opinionated personality that Kay is now. John's best years took place when he left the Atlanta Braves Broadcast booth and joined the Yankees. At that time, the Braves were a World Series contender and the Roberto Kelly Yankees were putrid. He had to liven up what would have otherwise been a boring broadcast. Many people did not know that before the Atlanta Braves job he had a NY based talk show and did play by play of Nets and Islander games on Long Island.

I am a Korean Yankees fan who is not good at English. I can understand about 20% of the average American's speech, but today I realized how great of an announcer John Sterling is when I can hear him at 80%.
