For those who don't know, John used to work for Charlie (he was the drum tech for Anthrax). He began recording in 1990, when Exodus hired him to play on two of their albums while their original drummer was on leave. He then would go on to play for Testament, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Helmet, and the Cult.

All of them are unique and great in their own way. Charlie is my favorite. So smooth and powerful. Like liquid. What he plays in Anthrax is a small part of what he is really capable of. I bet he could easily hold his own with Donati, Lang, Minneman and others. He did a drum duet with Mike Portnoy a few years ago and was simply amazing, ripping out Dream Theater parts like it was nothing. And Portnoys parts ard pretty involved.

Used to be a big fan of Donati (or guys like Lang, Grebb, Smith, Mayer Minemann etc...) even tho i could only graps à little of what he is doing, but personally the technique for the sake of technique itself is just plain boring, it makes you look more like a freak you'd see at a circus show than really anything enjoyable, proof most of these jazz classical elitist you see during jazz shows are just here for technique wankery because they all feel themselves "so much out there" (the same with pro chefs in cooking, or ultra realistic painters etc in art)..., I really prefer raw power, easy to grasp, it can be anything from metal to jazz or samba really, just make it musical !
@That_Idiot_Bass_Player6 жыл бұрын
Meh, it's just the idiom. It's not hard to get distracted by technique, but if you always have that depth of technical ability it's not necessarily about technique anymore to the player. In Virgil's case for example, he wouldn't be getting the work he does if he was just crapping out technique and not bringing actual musical ideas to the table and showing he can interact musically with others. Don't characterize other people's motivations, you can only truly speak to your own.
