What a hateful selfish song. And all your kids have left the nest and you're all alone With your fading memory and you're so lonely Well, at least you gotta nice home And I never doubted you for a minute For a minute, babe I just thought that you were meant for more I don't know this guys background to be fair but... This sounds like it's coming from someone who doesn't know what he is talking about

It sounds like it's coming from the perspective of a broken-hearted person who's held onto their bitterness at a particular person for a while. People in that situation don't always say the nicest things, so I think that's the way he's expressing the speaker's pain. I don't necessarily see him as hateful and selfish person though.

I don't think it is a hateful song. It's a song that portrays the regret of going into that "stable and secured" path in life rather than following your dreams. It's rare to find songs that tackles those topics and this one really nailed it beautifully. Try to listen and understand the lyrics more:) it's really beautiful.

I see where his perspective is coming from. I think my issue with it comes in 2 parts. It seems like and ex criticizing a marriage. And critizing a family while saying the mom should have followed her dreams. It's not always about "following your dreams" it is good to sacrifice your desires for others in this case the ability to be a wife and a mom to that husband and children. That is likely one of the most important jobs on earth is to be a mother of a house. So the 2 things 1) A college kid critizing the family structure 2) Thinking that "following your dreams" outweighs the beauty of being a mom to the point of regret when you had the opportunity to be a mom Art is meant to interpreted. I don't find this perspective beautiful. I do find it selfish coming from a place of someone who hasn't had privilege of watching his beautiful wife become a Mom. I have twice now. And I will always argue that her job is one of life's greatest privileges and responsibilities. This song feels like an attack on that life.
