Born in Epworth, England, in 1703, next we uncover the life of John Wesley as we unveil his life at home under strict spiritual instruction. He attended Oxford University where eventually he joined the 'Holy Club', which then went on to be named the 'Oxford Methodists'. Today, the Methodist church spans the globe, yet its birth was unintentional, and its roots go back to this Bible study group. However, some would say its roots go back even further, to the Wesley brothers’ godly upbringing in Epworth.

This gave me more information about being a Methodist. I hope to someday visit England, and stand in the spot John Wesley did at his conversion on Aldersgate Street.

Neither of my parents considered themselves methodists but, from the fact that they bought me books about Martin Luther and John Wesley, I gathered that they considered both to have been reformers. Your comment has given me another excuse to decry the idea that the protestant reformation “occured” in the sixteenth century. I think of several movements since the sixteenth century as being “reform” movements - of which the methodist movement was perhaps the best known. One of the problems with appeal to tradition is that it tends to stifle the inclination to incorporate reforms beyond what our parents may have embraced. At the very least, Chrstiain growth seems to require that we be constantly searching the scriptures in the hope of developing insights beyond what we have been taught. Several times when I was a boy, my father told me “Read for yourself, study for yourself and think for yourself.” To me, that is the very definition of “heretic” so I don’t mind at all when someone calls me that.

@C G :) Thanks for sharing that, i suppose in our age its like a sweet shop choice for where we go. (I mean the holy spirit) I have actually ended up at the Orthodox Church, so i suspect this will be my new home. I was leaving Anglicanism for many reasons! Not least women leadership, but also homosexuality and promotion of Calvinistic theology and relativism.

@@Stsebastian8900 what leads u to the Orthodox Church. One of the main things that holds me back in the praying to saints (or as some would call it asking for saints to pray for u/intercession). I just don’t find this biblical or even really compatible with Christianity

@@atlproductions216 True dat, early church never venerated icons, even Charlemagne and the Frankish Church believed that icons are only for decoration but are not worthy of veneration in the Council of Frankfurt

It's disturbing to see an Indian guy acting like he's English blood and lecturing about English history. Are there no more actual English people left? The Wesley's had 19 children. Now, genuine English people are having -- what, 1.3 kids? -- because of birth control. So sad.
