John Wick and the Problem with Writing Action

John Wick was a landmark action movie. Its simple yet effective storyline was the perfect excuse to deliver amazingly choreographed action set pieces. Keanu Reeves made a memorable action hero comeback and a franchise was started. About that...
"John Wick: Chapter 2", "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" (a colon AND a hyphen!) and now "John Wick: Chapter 4" all doubled down and tripled down and above on the action without offering any story besides: John must survive.
While the first film told a story of grief, puppy death revenge and took its time to build enormous expectation, all three sequels only throw goons at John to take down in repetitive ways. Let's see in this video essay why that is not enough and compare it to what is done right in the great action films "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".
Ever noticed how Hollywood (check Marvel) gives you a fight scene, then pauses so characters can chat? Like there's no way of conveying personality through fighting.

Agree with you. There's a saying which I don't remember perfectly but it goes like this. Your action scenes should revolve around the story not the other way.

In fact, an action scene should always BE a story (within a story), and it should be written, planned/blocked, directed/shot and edited as such: A sequence of causal relations and surprising reversals; as it needs both, consequence and suspense. Here is another great video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6PalXWtaayhq80si=d_d6gkSmrivw0CVw

I disagree that "John Wick" needs more character development because the drama part was already crap from the start. It takes itself soooo seriously, and it is soooo manipulative. The part where Viggo dumps John's entire backstory on us like we're a bunch of retards would be enough for me to check out, but gladly I didn't and that's only because of the choreography and stuntwork. "Crank", now that's a great 21st century action movie! God knows they are very few and far bewteen. "Baby Driver" is good one too.

Maybe the best example of a fighting scene showing the character's personality is the 2004 kid's movie The Incredibles, in the first fight between the Omnidroid and Mr Incredible. Later on the movie it is established that the Ominidroid learns from his opponent's moves to have an easier time killing them, but right then in this first fight and that he has being doing it for a long while spanning different versions of the same death machine. During the fight, whenever the Ominidroid gets hit or fails at doing something, it immediately changes tactics and sometimes even strategy as far as his objetive of killing Mr Incredible goes. If you pay close attention to his moves you can even get an idea on how did that robot killed the previous super heroes who were weaker than Mr incredible. And for Mr Incredible side, you can also see part of the character's past at defeating his enemies whenever he takes for granted a kockdown as a killing blow for his robotic enemy. It is very interesting that during the whole fight it is the Ominidroid who is in the offensive and as the fight progress, is winning more and more, but not without resistance by Mr Incredible adapting to his attacks and trying new ways of beating it, that is until Mr Incredible utilizes the robot's own relentlessness and adaptability against itself by infiltrating it's interior and making it kill itself in a vain attempt at completing it's objective.

Wick is just another example of how hollywood doesn't make movies anymore, they make copies of what has been successful in the past. John Wick 1 was a good-ish movie, but people talked most about the action. So hollowood made JW2 with more action and everything has to be a trilogy now so they made JW3 and in 2 and 3 they gave the audience that which they thought the audience wanted: lots and lots of action. The problem is that Reeves is getting old and in *every* action scene you can see the bad guys holdingback, slowing down, waiting for their bit in the choreography. If four armed me shoot at you, you are dead. If you manage to attack one hand-to-hand, the others will shoot you. If you manage to wrestle one man to the ground but did not take his gun, then you are now dead. We all remember the scene where JW is on a horse and a motorcycle decides the best way to attack is to try to pull wick off the horse... the man has a gun, he wants to kill wick, wick is right in front of him on a slow movling horse.... dude, shoot wick in the back. Shoot his horse, then shoot wick.... why even get within wick's reach? Action has to be choreographed to keep it safe, but if both fighters know what's coming it becomes very difficult to keep it looking spontaneous. Sword fights require that the defending party knows where the next hit is going to be aimed at, but in a real fight it takes time for you to see that and you have very little time to defend. In movies *every* hit is blocked. LIke clockwork, allways, until it;s time for the dramatic wound or the final kill. Yes ofcourse you can see a lot of the strikes coming, but look at fencing or catana fights. WHat annoys me most about Wick is how they play up how bad-ass Wick is. Everybody is afraid of him, evne the biggest baddest leaders of the worst gangs are afraid of him, and yet... *every* assassin on the entire planet has absolutely no problem to try and kill Wick. They all know he's the best, they know of all his kills and they will tell every character in the move that, but then they will turn around and try to take out wick by themselves. There is a scene were Wick is in alibrary and is *surprised* by an assassin who has a nice little chat with Wick about how he might aswell kill him now. An ASSASSIN who ANNOUNCES his presence TO HIS TARGET. Who wrote this? And I;m supposed to care about these people?
@elevenseven-yq4vu
@elevenseven-yq4vu Жыл бұрын
It is just trash. It is not written for people that care about anything. It is written for people who want to be kept on a brainwave and heartbeat that is as close to a flatline as you can get without falling asleep (dreams might be too exciting or close to reality) and without going to die either. It is a movie for people who love being zombies.

If this is one of the areas where the _Bourne_ movie is truly shine, at least the first three Matt Damon ones. They got a lot of Acclaim for the grittiness, the realism, and just to be honest the brutality of the action, and rightly so. they are highly energized. But it's underappreciated just how much characterization is in all of the fight scenes. The way born, but also some of the other characters move, react, think, pick up objects and use them and so on tells you certain things about who they are as individuals in the first few seconds of the scenes. Stent that you could probably watch the entire first movie without any sound and still get the rough edges of the entire experience.

Except the Marquees isn't really the big boss, he's just another glorified lackey. They gave up on the idea of him going after the High Table (something they were setting up at the end of the 3rd film), and just went for something else. Because, apparently, the High Table is truly faceless and untouchable. What a way to waste a finale. Especially when part 4, for the most part, just retreads the exact same ground as the prior films; doing the same action scenes except more over-the-top (example, he fell down 3 flights of stone stairs in the street in the 2nd film, in the 4th film he falls down considerable more than that). And it has another black side character with an attack dog, like in part 3, whoop-dee-do. Part 2 had an emphasis on the shootouts. Part 3 had more of an emphasis on the martial arts. Part 4 just couldn't do anything all that interesting to stand out what came before, save for the brief sequence with the nunchucks, and that "single take" top-down shooting sequence. Those two moments were not enough to salvage that overlong mess.

Among the best action scenes (gunplay) in all of Cinema is at the end of Don Siegel's "Madigan" (1968) - it's short, quick... blink and you'll miss it, but you won't blink because the whole film is leading to it: Bad guy steals "good "guy's" handgun - talk about dishonor! "Good" guy spends rest of movie trying to find the psycho creep and recoup his weapon. When he finally tracks the criminal down, he's too impatient to don a ballistic vest. And then you have a masterpiece of precision action blocking and film editing....by a brilliant film director.

My wife and I were thinking the same thing after the 3rd and 4th movies. We liked the first two movies, but the 3rd movie? It was too ridiculous. By the 4th one; dude, how many cars does John Wick need to get hit by before he'll be taken out? And those supersuits, WTF? Did they just recon the 3rd movie's heavily-armored characters that won't stay down? Everyone talks about the firefight from a videogame perspective. Yes, it's incredible, but I don't feel tension for John's life by this point. I _know_ he's going to win. That's the issue. I didn't know what was going to happen before, but now they set it up so I'll know. And John did _nothing_ for them to come after him. The one guy used a mark to get him to kill his sister. The fact that he runs away from John and tries to off him means _he_ was the one breaking the rules. He was in the wrong. And then in the 4th movie, this guy brings guns into a neutral zone and kills a bunch of people. Did he not break the rules? He also destroyed The Continental. WHAT? Why not replace Winston? Martyr you say? Then what about the Japanese dude you killed? UGH. The plot was so frustratingly bad made of swiss cheese the whole movie. I hated it. In summary, I really liked the first movie, and the second movie was great too. You're saying the second movie was already bad; maybe it was, but my turning point was the 3rd movie. I didn't even feel like watching the 4th one. I bought it at release and didn't watch it until 2 weeks ago (mid-September 2023). Clearly, it wasn't a priority. And I won't be watching any more John Wick universe movies. They killed the franchise with that last one. I'm upset and disappointed that fans of the series don't feel the same way. I think they're too into the visuals to realize the first movie was good because the story and worldbuilding were incredible.

I think a lot of your comments are good but ultimately I think John Wick and action films in general always put more emphasis on the action as opposed to a drama with an action sequence or two. JW 4 has one scene that looks like a top-down-view demo out of a shooting console game reenacted in a studio, and one scene that is literally a uphill battle on a stair done in a slapstick style with baddies being stupider than enemies in a 1980 arcade shoot em up, like a cheap copycat version of an old Jackie Chan movie scene, but with the creativity taken out to strip down and streamline it into something more generic. Apart from that, you see John Wick stand in front of several kitschy tourist postcard type backdrops randomly. There you have it, everything worth memorable about it.

I'll have to disagree but it's understandable since you're more of a "classicist" when it comes of what you feel a movie should be and deliver (I'm not saying it in a negative way). John Wick 1 is, indeed, more classical in its approach of movie making and storytelling, but the others are different, they're more experimental action pieces that try to adapt the language of video games and other forms of modern pop art to the screen. Though I understand one might not like this, I think they make them far more interesting than the first one. And tbf I think this kind of disagreement are fascinating because they reveal how different the idea of what a film is can be between different people

I also love seeing different points of view and you make a terrific argument. Indeed the video game angle dominates the sequels, with its large world-building and simple “do-this-then-do-that” storyline. I love your sexy take, but as both an avid gamer and smb with half a degree in visual art and media, I still fail to appreciate what they were going for in movies 2-4. But even people who play video games with any level of criticalness _also_ hate that video games do this. I don't think adapting a bad thing and successfully making your film have those bad things makes your movie good. Successful, maybe (in more ways than one!) but not good. The best games have good gameplay, and maybe good characters to go along with it. (Bulletstorm comes to mind.) The best movies don't have gameplay at all. They have characters and that's it. Fail at characters and you fail. And John Wick, I think, fails.

Fight scenes in Chinese (and therefore also Hong Kong) films are first and foremost "A Scene". That is to say that there is a conflict that has to be resolved. The conflict is represented in the fight and its conclusion will resolve the conflict. Plus the resolution is rarely a complete victory or defeat. There is a negative part in the win and a positive in the defeat. What's missing from fight scenes in most of Western films (not all there are always exceptions and good action/fight movie scriptwriters) is meaning.

You can get fight scenes on a similar level (same team?) wrapped in great world building, with overblown but characteristic characters, an actual story, told from a unique perspective, boasting, lying, psychotic in a movie that was not very well received, as it is not part of a franchise that just repeats itself. Just watch Harley Quinn / Bird of Prey. There's more to remember in it than the main character standing in front of some glossy poster tapestry straight out of a kitschy tourism advertisement, which is basically all John Wick 4 has to offer.

Take Robert McKee's analysis of Rambo and tell me it doesn't apply to JW _What went wrong with Rambo? In First Blood he was a compelling character--a Vietnam burnout, a loner hiking through the mountains, seeking solitude (characterization). Then a sheriff, for no reason other than wickedly high levels of testosterone, provoked him, and out came Rambo, a ruthless and unstoppable killer (true character). But once Rambo came out, he wouldn't go back in. For the sequels, he strapped bandoleers of bullets across his oiled, pumped muscles, coiffed his locks with a red bandanna until super-hero characterization and true character merged into a figure with less dimension than a Saturday morning cartoon_ Story Substance, Structure and Style pg. 103 Take out specific details, and tell me it's not a word-for-word description of John Wick. I've never even watched the first John Wick movie. I think I began to watch it one day, but turned it off after 20 mins. As it is Keanu Reeves is not the most expressive actor. But the lack of story just made me bored almost immediately.

I really can't believe you thought part 1 was any better. The puppy thing seemed like a weak excuse to slaughter half the city. And as for stylizing the mass shotouts to make it look cool... super corny. I dont mind violence - Goodfellas fan here - but the writing and character development was awful. Parts 2,3,4 were just more of the same.

John Wick is the perfect embodiment of Capitalism: Characterless, ruthless, dealing out as much of the same with as little effort and for the highest price possible, deadly to anyone in the way, globally victorious, every action is stylised as some form of advertisement, and there is no purpose behind it all but self-perpetuation.

True, the action dominates the movies. But, the action is almost always beautifully choreographed, and filmed in long shots, without the need for editing to make them look more "realistic". Look at the "Taken: series, if you care to waste a lot of time watching quick cuts and slapped together "action". There is also a thread going through the entire series: that John Wick is part of an organization, an employee or union member who happens to be very good at his job. And then, he rebels. He decides the rules don't apply to him, which is not acceptable in this organization. So, he must be eliminated. But he also has accrued not only an aura of invincibility (because he is unbeatable). But also has contacts outside the organization he can call upon. Which seems like an inherent contradiction (everyone else should play by the rules, except him). But, the action scenes are so vibrant, so creative, and beautifully realized, we are willing to suspend our disbelief/analytical skills for a few hours. So, I definitely see your point, and agree. But frankly, I don't care.

The first taken is a masterpiece, in my opinion. Well, it has about two scenes that are kind of duds, so maybe almost a masterpiece?

You have almost ruined this favorite franchise of mine :D I think most of John Wick fans are fans of the action plus fans of Keanu Reeves. And the character somehow suits Mr. Reeves personality off screen. That's my opinion.

Moviewise has made some good calls but this entire video is bullshit. To suggest that only the first film has a story is completely absurd. The second film is foreshadowed in the first when Winston tells John Wick "You dip so much as a pinky in this pound don't be surprised if something grabs you and pulls you back in.". This of course reveals itself in form of Santino D'Antonio showing up on John's doorstep with a Marker in hand demanding that he return for one last time to fulfil his obligation to not only him but to the Table. This of course puts John in between a rock and hard place knowing as he doesn't want to return to this life. After refusing the Marker this gives D'Antonio the right to blow up John Wick's home. The home he shared with his now deceased wife. I could keep going and going describing the story put hopefully by now you get the point. This is the most lazy Moviewise video I've ever seen and nobody should take it seriously.

@@decadepasts My things-to-buy-list has a plot: The order of things I want to buy is arranged so that I can go from top to bottom and take stuff out of the shelves (events) while taking the shortest route to the cashier (sequence). Would you call that list a story, or is there missing something?
