John Williams: Saying Goodbye | E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (piano cover with film)

Brett Mitchell performs his original solo piano arrangement of 'Saying Goodbye'-synchronized with the climactic, final scene from the original film-from John Williams's Oscar-winning score for 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' (1982). This cue is known as 'The Departure' in Mr. Williams's original score, and is part of 'Adventure on Earth' on the original soundtrack album.

Amazing. What a great idea to play this magnificent cue on piano, and in sync. Not an easy task but its perfect. This cue is something special. Im sure you already know this but after multiple attempts to sync his music to the final edit and without success, john Williams requested that the film was turned off so he could conduct just the music in the way he felt it needed to be paced. It worked so well, that the film was re-edited to match. A first time for a Hollywood picture - but thats why it still remains the greatest finale in movie music.

One of the few movies where the film actually was edited after the score, because Steven Spielberg didnt wanna ruin the fenomenal music written by John. It didnt work playing it after the edited movie.

This is 100% Incorrect! These Old Internet Stories get bigger and bigger! The Correct deal was this According To John Williams found on The Net Interviews. When The recording happen…John Williams said at the beginning chase sequence..His Cues would not match up with what Spielberg’s editor Carol Littleton…When Williams couldn’t match the dynamic cues changes. Spielberg suggested that he stops film at the first couple minutes of the chase sequence…and And Yes Carol Littleton and Spielberg went back and re edited small portions of the bicycle chase sequence..NOT THE ENTIRE FILM, NOT THE LAST 15 MINUTES! John Williams has always been clear with that fact…I wish others would catch on!

Williams has either said a few moments, or a couple of minutes that was corrected. Because Williams said his music would not match up with Carol Littleton’s Edits. In Fact Williams said there be one moment The Orchestra would get it right, then other times it would not sync up. The Internet is filled with Old Wife Tales of truly absurd events that never ever, ever never happened.
