The reign of the emperor and empress Carlos V and Doiia Isabel of Portugal (1517-1556) is one of the peaks in the Alchar's long history. Seville itself, as gateway to the Indies, basked in the splendour of untold riches that flowed back to the city. Much of the wealth found its way to the AlcQzar and allowed ever more restoration to be carried out. The medieval turned into the Renaissance and the rulers could live more comfortably. The Gothic Palace became known as the Sal6n de las Fiestas, used for banquets and imperial weddings. One of its areas, a lofty tiled patio, is where John Williams plays this Scarlatti sonata - an Italian composition with appropriately Spanish overtones.
