Sam Raimi was dead on when he said the Woo's style would be compromised in Hollywood. It was, and that's why Woo went back to Hong Kong
@JoshLavian
@JoshLavian 3 жыл бұрын
That's ironic, because if I remember right, Raimi was brought in by the studio specifically to chaperone Woo because they didn't have confidence in him. I think he even went back and insisted Woo was fine and knew what he was doing

Gotta love Rami for being a Woo lover. Even though I dont like Ramis work outside of Evil Dead (to be clear, I LOVE evil dead though, especially 2), have tremendous respect for him as a filmmaker.

I mean Raimi owes some of his most Iconic senenes to HK filmmakers like Sammo Hung (Spooky Encounters).

@@tylerdordon99 Finally somebody mentioned the hand scene. God I love Encounters Of The Spooky Kind - IMO it's the greatest Horror/Comedy (with phenomenal action) ever made. An easy 10/10, Sammo's Golden Era HK flicks were just perfection, completely unmatched.

Another extremely underrated Woo film is JUST HEROES. Warehouse shootout and end shootout in the villa are amazing.

John Woo best action masterpiece is Hard Boiled without a doubt.

The films that preceded it were better. I love Hard Boiled but Hand of Death, Last Hurrah For Chivalry, A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, The Killer and Bullet In The Head are all better movies.

Those movies definitely have a better story and character development, but if your just talking about pure action spectacle, then you really can’t beat Hardboiled. That movie is just a roller coaster of awesome action set pieces

Both of you I agree with. I care more about story and characters. ABT 1 & 2, The Killer and Bullet in the head were more up my alley. Hard Boiled does have amazing action sequences, especially that 1 take shot in the hospital. Silent Night could have been better, but he was definitely experimenting for sure.

I remember seeing this when it first aired in the UK on BBC 2's Moving Pictures. This segment persuaded me to go and rent The Killer. I was just blown away, I remember watching that film and then immediately watching it again after it had finished.

Wow at 11min 12sec sam raimi in 1992 says "he fears for John woo as Hollywood will want to control him".... Isn't that the dam truth!!! Mi2 I could tell Tom cruise was changing things behind the scenes.... Face off was a come back for John's style, paycheck I thought was quite bad... Not John's sort of style at all... Then John went back to Hong Kong... Sam was spot on. 😳🧐🙄

The closest we got to a John woo film from Hollywood is face off.

and it was shite, sadly. His best films were in Hong Kong - I even love Hand of Death & Last Hurrah For Chivalry which were superb non-Heroic Bloodshed titles.

@@Grandmastergav86You are the typical John Woo fan if I may call you that, that hates all Woo's American films for no apparent or logical reason. And to tell you the truth, I don't give you a damn but I'm entitled to say that you have a terrible taste and what is worse, full of prejudice. Don't waste your time on replying.
