I have watched a couple of Andre Previn videos rehearsing a school orchestra. He is masterful, not talking down to them, humorous, inspiring, treating them with respect while extending them. I cannot think of many conductors able to this.

Abbado was certainly like this. Story with Abbado was he saw I believe Toscanini as a boy, and was inspired to never behave as such

that part absolutely cracked me up but it was also SO effective in improving the sound of the orchestra dramatically in under 11 seconds. truly such excellent conducting :D

Constructive and instructive criticism without making anyone feel small. A gentleman trying to pass on his great wealth of knowledge.

Andre Previn is my new hero. He had them playing notably better in a minute-and-a-half.

Indeed but the orchestra was also sight reading. That's why it doesn't sound very good compared to Previn conducting them in Glinka and Rachmaninov..

mother of god, in the first 54 seconds I had to pause and take a deep breath because I've never learned so much about music in under a minute. I been working actively on music since I was 5 years old, now 35 still NEVER heard such concentration of useful musical information in under 60 seconds. NEVER! edit: just continuing to watch this, as a non-orchestra player myself (piano, guitar, synthesizer are my instruments) I dunno there's just something about a well-intentioned and talented youth orchestra with a god-tier conductor to make you REALLY understand the enormous, yawning, chasm-like gap between being a gifted kid who really likes playing violin vs being a professional orchestra muscian i mean the difficulty, the precision, the coordinated teamwork it's just insane that humans have ever coordinated a single truly great start-to-finish performance of any symphony, ever never forget how incredible our species is for that one act alone redeems a lot of our bullshit tbh
@john1951w2 жыл бұрын
Considering the kids were sight reading it's not too bad!! Previn was a wonderful bloke.
@NICUofficial2 жыл бұрын
@@john1951w yes they did phenomenally well!! - I also admire how rapidly the group tightened up with a veteran leader, and all this with the pressure of an audience! Bet these kids remembered this orchestra session well after the grew up ^_^
@john1951w2 жыл бұрын
@@NICUofficial I remember it well. We also made an LP with Previn for the Decca label - one of several commercial recordings that featured the orchestra under the direction of Previn, Tippett, Mathias, Loughran etc. This band was the best state school orchestra in the UK for many years under the direction of Michael Tippett.

I don't know why Previn never conducted the NYOGB in the 70s. He would've been perfect.

I listened before rolling down to see who he was directing. Which explains alot. My first thought was the LAPhil was having a very bad day, but these kids did pretty well considering they were kids.

A student orchestra. I KNOW he didnt rehearse the LSO like this!
@davidgray96715 жыл бұрын
...he wouldn't have dared to but maybe he should have.
@john1951w5 жыл бұрын
Of course he didn't rehearse the LSO like this. It's not even a student orchestra comprising of specialist music students. It's a school orchestra, aged 14 to 18. Andre approached Leicestershire and offered this opportunity for the orchestra to appear on the BBC. Marvellous musician and a lovely man.
@tomgauterin17235 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - and he does *everything* right. No concessions, no condescension, nothing negative - everything he says is constructive and helpful. Frankly, you could learn more from watching this than from a week on a conducting course. Brilliant musician, lovely guy. Wish more big-name conductors would do stuff like this.

Who thought it was a good idea to have this student orchestra play Beethoven? The Farandole or Carmen Suites would have been more appropriate.....

The purpose of good student orchestras is to teach them standard repertoire, to prepare them for professional work.
