All my Haworthias are potted similarly to Lithops using mostly grit with very little dirt. My mix is composed of chicken/chick grit(both), pumice, and a small portion of garden soil. An 80/20 ratio of grit to soil.

@johnnyAGardening 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds ideal, the mix you use would work well. WE are doing a seperate video on potting mixes for succulents soon. The actual mix depends on the succulent, your climate and your watering habits.

Can you re-use the old potting mix, for example, by adding some fertilizer, or treating it somehow? What do you do with all that old soil?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 жыл бұрын
Its best to at least mix 50% new soil when repotting, most growers use all new mix, The old soil can be used in the garden or in pots for less fussy plants.

Hi my biggest doubt is alway the potting mix... now I’ve bought what I could find and it’s: pomice 3-8mm, lapillo (lava rock) 2-10mm, washes river sand 1-8mm, Perlite , coco coir, compost/peat moss potting soil. Now I’ve prepared a 2/3-1/3 grit to soil using 1 part of each of these 6 ingredients but it weights too much. DOES weight count? Is it a problem if the substrate is heavy in weight even when dry?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 жыл бұрын
Its hard to tell, however if it drains quickly and does not hold water then it should be OK. I think that ratios could be adjusted so here is the ratio of the ingredients that James uses. Haworthia potting mix * 6 parts succulent soil mix * 2 coir (coarse) * 1 part 3ml washed river sand * 1 part 1-3ml blend washed river sand (no clay or fines) * 1 part perlite * 1 part either 4 - 5 ml Scoria or 3 - 6 ml Pumice.

I have a few varieties of haworthias (cooperi, truncata, reinwardtii, etc) that ive had for years. I personally like the full/clumped look but I’m starting to worry that leaving them in a tight clump will eventually kill them if i dont separate and repot. Thoughts? Thanks PS i love your videos and your accent is so soothing!
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 жыл бұрын
We agree that they can look good in clumps and in nature they grow like this. After a long time in a clump they can start to deteriorate due to over overcrowding, however as to how long, its hard to tell. So eventually you will need to divide them to keep them healthy. We guess you have repotted them as this also keeps them healthy because over time the growing medium deteriorates. In a good growing medium we have seen them go for five years with no real problems. So its up to you as to how long you leave them, but eventually you will need to divide them to keep them looking good

Great video! Love the way they look. Mine are grown in a hot Mediterranean climate. I know that watering should be withheld in the peak of summer (July to August in Northern hemisphere), but they are more susceptible to shriveling and drying at that time. Do you have hot summers too? How do you treat them at this time?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 жыл бұрын
We have hot summers as well, a Mediterranean climate but more moderate to hot than hot. In very hot summers and as thy are probably in containers which will dry more than if in the ground, I would think a little water once in a while will not hurt them, just don't overdo it. I will have a talk to James Lucas and get back to you.

Thank you for these videos. I’m so new to this and so excited to start growing succulents. I tried to find pine bark and it seems like the places I went did not carry bark that was a perfect size for a soil. It was all a medium. Would any type of mulch work for this concoction? Also I can seem to fined River sand. I just found some sandy clay. Would that clay work as a substitute? Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 4 жыл бұрын
Try for a sand that does not include clay, so any washed sand that is not sea (beach) sand. As a pine bark substitute, rice husks or course perlite should work. Where are you located ?
@yodouble2
@yodouble2 4 жыл бұрын
johnny A Ok thank you. The only perlite I see Putin the stores are from the brand Miraclegro. So I did end up buying some clay that’s grinder into sand. So I will take that back then. So any washed sand that has no clay is what I will look for. I am located out of Fresno California. Central Ca.

@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 жыл бұрын
Usually wait 1 - 2 weeks after repotting and then overhead water. This allows any root damage to repair itself if dry conditions, which helps prevent root problems. After that wait until the soil dries before watering again.

Good question ....Usually we wait 5 - 7 days just in case of root damage. Then water as normal.

Hi Johny i have one & i gave 30% Stones 30% compost soil 10% Stones 10% Perlit 10% sand 5% cocopit 5% leaves compost, today one plant died & i compare with others , the soil looks more wet. How it is?
@johnnyAGardening

Haworthia really need a very free draining soil and a pot with a good sized drainage hole. Difficult to tell without seeing the actual mix, at a guess I would use less compost and always allow the mix to dry between waterings. The soil may look wet, however it drains very freely and the plants are not watered very often, maybe once a month or even longer depending on the weather.

@@johnnyAGardening Roots alreay died but few are still alive. Re-poted the plant in less soil like 20% & rest are like concrete , Sands, stones, charchole, etc
