The call you made about mamba mentality.. almost perfect bro.. he was almost the equivalent to rugby league as kobe to basketball... and when they talk about class.. the ring he gave at the start was to his injured captain, could have been his rookie season maybe or his 2nd.. he was also known for giving his headgear he wears to children watching on the side.. as well as other things.. definitely a generational player and tried to inspire and give back as much as he could

The 2014 semi final try shown in the video was called back and disallowed by the referee. It was the third year in a row that the Cowboys had lost in the semis because of a controversial referees call - an insane level of bad luck/bad refereeing - which is why Thurston was so angry. Essentially, Thurston was considered one of the greatest of all time, except he had never been able to bring the Cowboys their first Grand Final win, and only because the Cowboys kept getting robbed in the semi finals. Then 2015 happened...

Jonathan Thurston was the best in the game hands-down. He was a nice guy in person. Very skillful

This guy is special when he was young he was in trouble with the law a bit .At the age of 23 he told himself after being in lock up for the night no more from that point on he became the most respected person/footballer there could be. After every kick he picked up his kicking tee and handed it to the ball boy after every game he gave some young kid his headgear. Johnathon was told at a young age he was to small and no team really wanted him. At the end of his career every team WANTED him and every team that had him usually won because of him he was that competive .

You CAN'T leave it right there! The clutch play is literally coming up next. The NQ Cowboys (Thurstons team) had been robbed in successive season in the finals, and in 2015 they finally made it to the Grand Final (the equivalent of the Super Bowl) for only the second time. The Cowboys had looked beaten with only seconds left on the clock when Thurston was running in circles trying to find something to win. He managed to loop around, pass to Morgan who ran to the line, flick passed to Feldt who scored in the corner ON THE FULLTIME BUZZER to equal the scores up! Thurston took an age to set up the kick to win the game - which is where you ended the video as it hit the goal post, and sent the game into Golden Point overtime (first to score a point wins). Next came THE clutch play of Thurstons career, and set him up as a future immortal (a media award for the few game-changing players) and handed the NQ Cowboys their first-ever premiership. It is widely known as the BEST Grand Final in the history of Rugby League. I was standing behind the goalposts that he kicked the winning point over, and nearly pissed myself with excitement. Thurston was never the biggest or strongest, but he was up in the top handful of most skilful game planners and managers with a tenacious competitive drive that continually saw him the best player in the game. He made everyone else look good, never himself.

G'day Sean! Love your stuff. I'll 'Try' to explain a little about what's happening. A 'Try' in Rugby is a Touch-down in NFL, the main difference being that the scorer has to have control of the football and force the ball to the ground behind the Touchdown Line (Try Line). Originally in Rugby, nearly 200 years ago, a 'pig's bladder, the original football, had to be placed on the ground behind the 'Try' (Touchdown) Line to allow the team to have a kick at goal and then score points. Eventually, the 'Try' itself was given points as well. I hope this explains a little bit of the game. Great Work!

at the start when he said he gave his Grand Final ring to Steve price after they won't the comp in 04. Steve price played all year but was injured and missed out on the GF team because of it. so JT gave HIS ring to Steve as only players on GF day receive one. also Bulldogs (the team in white/blue) at the start after winning the GF they said they didn't want him, was too small and didn't think he would be as successful as he knoes as in NRL. he goes to North Queensland Cowboys in 05 and fast forward 17yrs later and he is considered one of the best to ever do it

The guy that made the comment just after the start is matty johns . What he said is that he thought JT was the best half back to ever play and that upset his family because his brother joey johns was regarded as the best ever player and is an immoral.
@TheLocalGent2 жыл бұрын
nar Cowboys LOST 31-30 in 2014 in the semi. JT's try was disallowed because one of his team mates knocked on (knocked the ball forward) & they were knocked out, missing out on Grand final. They made it to the Grand final in 2015 against the Brisbane Broncos (my team) which they were actually losing until one of the broncos players dropped the ball & they scored to level the game, he kicked from the side line to tie the game, then they ended up winning the GRAND FINAL in 2015. he is one of the best players to ever pick up a footy. our HOF i guess you could say we call "immortals"
@TheLocalGent2 жыл бұрын
TRY is when you are actually awarded the try. which is 4 points. 2 points for a conversion which is the kick. the kick is perfectly inline with where the ball was put down over the line as far back as the kicker wishes. so its an advantage to get it closer towards the goal posts so the kick is in front....unless you have a good kicker .there are a heap that kick those kicks from the side every single week, but he loved what we call the BANNANA kick which curves back. thurston kicked them quite easily ha. Thurston actually went to school in Toowoomba at St Mary's for Football (massive rugby league school) & as a kid i would go and get the ball for him after he wouldn't leave the field until he KICKED 100 successful conversions :o
@TheLocalGent2 жыл бұрын
also at the start he gave his GRAND FINAL ring which he won with the Bulldogs in 2014 to Steve Price (another Toowoomba Product ;) because steve price was injured for the GF & Thurston thought he deserved it (as only players who play in the final get a ring) real class act. they then decided he was too small & not fast enough to take them to a premiership & he then was signed to North Queensland Cowboys where the rest is now history! which the Cowboys actually made the GF in 2005 with thurston but lost to West Tigers!

Ha you should of watched the rest if it's a draw it goes to extra time, Jonathan Thurston kicks a field goal to win the Grandfinal. The line the Goal posts are on is the Tryline. A try is what you would call a touchdown. The game generally goes for 2 x 40 minute half's with a 20 break at half time, no exat time. If it's a draw, then 2 x 5 minute halves are played, but it's first to score golderen Point. If it's a State of Origin match, it's 2 x 10 minute halves, then 2 x 5 minute halves until someone wins and golden point, but someone must win.

@markovull2 жыл бұрын
just an fyi: it's called a 'try' because originally, back in the 19th century, grounding the ball in the 'end zone' only earned you the right to 'try' to kick a goal -- it wasn't worth any points in and of itself

Of course American kickers always kick it straight. That's where the posts are. Look where he's kicking from. A rugby pitch is about 30 yards wider than a football field and he's taking kicks from the sidelines. The posts are very narrow from over there so you curve it in like a golfer playing his fade. Back in the annals of history touching the ball down in goal garnered no points. What it got you was a free kick at goal to score points. It got you a Try. Only later did they start giving points for merely touching the ball down. Only in the 90's did a converted try out score two kicks when the try became 5 points.

In rugby league play continues after a buzzer or siren until you successfully defuse that play. People gotta stop picking these cinematic videos for them to watch. They need to see straight highlights not great angles of him and all commentators hyping him up. This video does his skills no justice! Watch something like johnathan thurston ultimate tribute and you'll see why he is widely regarded as the goat.

The Cowboys should've won 2-3 in a row but they were running into the Broncos in the Semis who also had a dynastic team And those teams played at such a high level whoever won and moved to the final was just to high of level to get yourself up for again

2014 they LOST 31-30. JT scored and it would have been 34-31 but they called it a No try because it was a forward pass (has to go back in NRL) so the fans were not happy. they won it in 2015 again the Brisbane Broncos. the Broncos were winning most the game but they leveled the scored even and it went into GOLDEN POINT. which means next to kick a goal or try wins. and the Broncos dropped it and the cowboys won. winning their first ever premiership
