The final time scramble was extremely nerve-racking: I think I stopped breathing for a long time with my heart in my throat! But I knew that John has the capacity to survive in even the most harrowing positions/time deficits - I've seen him do it many times over the years! As for the opening in the game, I know that Danya has definitely stated that he and Bortnyk in their course recommend 4 e4 after 1 d4 d5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 Bf4 c5 - they apparently claim that 4 e3 lets Black equalize. (So much opening theory, so little time - sigh!)

Danya and Bortnyk do recommend e4 actually, there’s a lot of cool lines there you should check out! I think the most challenging line is for black to play knight takes e4, followed by Qa5 check

Wake up to a new morning, a new video.... and Nb5! My coffee sat on the desk un-drunk for the next 20 minutes!! This is the kind of situation I seem to face way too often, and it was amazing to see John stay steady, maneuver, and keep it all going until the end!! Thanks, John!

I don't remember it very well, but it reminded me a lot of Albin's Counter-Gambit and honestly, I don't remember it very well because I once asked you about it, and you said something else was better. Having bumped my head against it a few times, I decided you were right.

Thanks for the video John! Not sure if this was already mentioned but I noticed some clipping on your voice. It might be a setting in your software to doublecheck for next time! Either the mic input or when you bounced the audio. It was minor and didn't really impact the enjoyment of the video :)

Hey John, it's the Analysis Gang! On move 22, when you captured en passant, my first instinct was to capture on f4 instead to keep my pawn structure more or less intact. Can you explain a little bit about how you arrived at that conclusion? Is there a nuance between the dark-square bishop capturing on f4 and the light-square bishop capturing on f3? Or is this one of those decisions that doesn't matter too much? I only ask because 99 times out of 100 I probably would have just played exf4--but I am also a very bad player! Also, I'm going to take the fact that your last couple videos have been longer as a sign that your voice is continuing to improve. Glad to hear it!
@JohnBartholomewChess Жыл бұрын
Cheers for following the analysis! 😁 I think those two captures are pretty close in value, as I believe the engine was briefly showing in the analysis. I preferred ...exf3 because ...e5-e4 came with tempo on the next move, but realistically the only difference turns out to be the position of White's dark-square bishop (f4 vs. e3). And thanks, my voice has been doing a bit better lately. Optimistic :)

Here's an idea .. Maybe you could write down a few key phrases on placards and simply hold them silently up to the camera as you play? 'Hey guys, this is John' 'I kinda like my position here' 'I think this is a mistake from my opponent here...' 'I'm in a bit of time pressure' 'What, no increment??!😮' Just a few examples. 😂
