Entwistle had HUGE hands. I had my bass with me, same as his Alembic, well to degree. Showed it to him, his fingers practically wrapped around the neck twice.

I met him too. In 1982 during the tour for It's Hard. A girl I knew had a fight with her boyfriend and gave me his backstage pass. She took some great pictures with the band and I got a chanced to speak to John about technique and influences. I was in a rock/fusion band time and as soon as I told him I was bass player he was genuinely interested in my approach to the instrument since we both liked to finger tap the neck, and our love of frettless basses.

Those German-made basses cost about three times as much as a Gibson Thunderbird. I have a Gibby Tbird and love it, although I may drive up the road next year to Santa Rosa and visit the folks at Alembic to talk about a custom Europa build.

Be prepared to spend $25,000 for a custom build
@theangriestbassplayer74923 жыл бұрын
@@RisvoldTheGreat I have two custom Alembics (Rogue and Essence) and both of them cost just under $25K combined. It all depends on what model you start with and whether or not you go for Series I or II electronics. The Series electronics are absurdly expensive. And they're not necessary to get that classic Entwistle tone.
@Cap683 Жыл бұрын
I have an off the shelf Alembic Essence from the 1990s with only a low pass filter for tone shaping. The bass is extremely clean sound wise. Perhaps too clean. Dropping a fortune on an Alembic bass probably won't get the Entwhistle sound. There are just too many other factors such as amps, playing technique. Remember, he did the bass break on My Generation on a Danelectro Long Horn. Alembic basses are absolute luxury items.

🎯 There was never any bullshit about John's technique -- just PURE musicianship. Even his "flash " licks had purpose and served the song. And the guy looked so humble when he played - like he was just doing his job and didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary . John's attitude in his approach to his instrument reminds me of Eddie Van Halen: they both looked soooo natural & comfortable in their style - even while executing the most COMPlex licks. I love that several people commented ,"this video of John made me smile" -- That's the Best compliment ANY artist can get IMO. YES, it made me smile too😂😂

Or a typists finger tips hitting the keys on a typewriter. There is a video of John actually typing out there and he was not good at it! But better yet think of the hammer striking a string on a piano. His right hand could be in different positions when he did it, not just over the neck and fret board. Tapping is different, pushing down on the string to make a note at that position on the neck/fret board 0:35 - 0:40 index finger on right hand.

Entwhistle is a bass god. Even Thunderfingers, himself, cant coax a decent tone from another overpriced, overrated Thunderbird bass.
@videomaniac1087 жыл бұрын
If the Tbird is so incapable of producing a good tone then why did Entwistle use it for so long? He has used Alembics, Fender P and J basses, Warwicks and others, so it isn't as if he had no choice. I play a Gibson Thunderbird with high-tension flatwound strings and love the tone. The neck through Thunderbird with high-tension flats can be set up with very low neck relief and very low action, coupled with the narrow width neck(1.5" at the nut) you have a bass that is very fast and intonates great across the frets. If you play fingerstyle or pick it is a great bass. For slap it's probably not the best choice, nor is it good if you want a grindy midrange heavy tone like Geddy Lee or Chris Squire on a Rickenbacker with rounds.
@pckpat7 жыл бұрын
You make yourself sound not too intelligent making comments such as those, Mr. Stone. I played bass for many decades, and have owned many various makes and models. The Thunderbird is an awesome instrument, along with it's sister the Firebird, which I also own and have owned a few...they were way ahead of their time, thanks to Ray Dietrich's engineering and design genius.
