literally the first thought i had right as tom came on the set and they started playing the frickin 90s theme music was "huh, remember the age of innocence..."" let's NOT forget it wasn't actually that way though. it REALLY wasn't. it was different, and more naive, but not more innocent.
@pam06262 жыл бұрын
@@lethaldream50 You have a point. I think the country was all too happy to put the tumultuous 60’s & 70’s behind them and allow themselves to be lulled into a feeling of contentment.
@lethaldream502 жыл бұрын
@@pam0626 yes, and it's totally valid for us to look back on those times with rose-tinted glasses or to get a nostalgia rush from them (i wrote my own comment about how nostalgic and happy this clip made me because of its "90s innocence") just as long as we don't forget what the reality was like. you're definitely right about the 80s & 90s up to about y2k being an era of what i would call a, umm, hmm... an "optimistic capitalistic cyber-casino celebrity dream sequence" or something like that i was 9 in 1999 but i'm very interested in history so i very vividly remember all the sort of futuristic "hope" and neo-futurist "vibe" that people felt the internet and digital world would lead our timeline into-- there was this feeling of a great future ahead of us when i was growing up, of so much potential and freedom. of course, it was that false sense of security still at work. but what you're talking about definitely started before i was born, and before PCs or the net was even widespread (from all i know of the 80s)-- big glitz, big celebrity, big comedy, big consumerism, and those big shopping malls that are now completely derelict and abandoned... big "safety" that i would say ended around 9/11 it was what i know about the 80s *especially* that prompted my original comment though. it's only human to seek that somatic lulling feeling of safety. sometimes a little of it is good for us, to keep our mental health well we do actually need to feel a little bit safe at times even when that's not the truth, because too much paranoia & fear is psychologically damaging ... we just have to not lose sight of what actually happened in history during these times and *why* we needed these comforts and feelings of "contentment" back then and also especially in the last few years i think we have longed for those feelings to return to us even more. didn't mean to write so much, i've just been binge watching old 90s tv bits all night and was feeling introspective about this. my 25 cents is free!

This is Tom Cruise appearance is believed to be the one that inspired actor Patrick Bateman, in his portrayal of "American Psycho". Here is the actual quote from director Mary Herron. "“We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave. And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.” Eight years later (1996) Tom appeared on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. In that appearance, he wastightly wound and controlled. My guess is Herron conflated the O'Donnell Show with Letterman. There's really nothing at all American Psycho about this appearance. But the O'Donnell appearance is more Patrick Bateman-esque.

i was a kid in the 90s and not allowed to watch tv often or at all. and we only had about 5 channels. i was obsessed with finding ways to watch tv, so if we'd go to a hotel, i'd immediately go see if i could find a daytime talkshow on it or something like that. to this day i'm still totally obsessed with watching 90s talk shows or daytime shows no matter how weird or trashy they can get (like jerry springer, jessi etc)... i get a big nostalgia rush even if i've never seen an episode before, because they all trigger the same amalgamated collection of connections in my brain associated with that "rush" feeling i used to get when i discovered an episode of a talk show to watch when i was a kid (because it was that awesome to me) so it's cool that as an adult i can find so many old episodes on youtube. would've blown my mind. also as a kid, and a teenager, i never saw or understood WHY people find Tom Cruise attractive. maybe it's because his hairstyle looks like my dad's did back then (im slightly faceblind, so i notice other things more to identify people...) but wow, he is so charismatic and young-looking (...see, i'm not TOTALLY faceblind...) in this and i just can't believe someone can polish and curate their natural levels of charisma to these perfected heights. and if i ignore the fact that he kinda looks like my dad to me, i see why people are into him. damn, it's really weird to think about how crazy Tom actually is and around the time this was filmed he was moonlighting as a Scientology Super-Idol ... putting all your points into +CHA is apparently not as stupid as it sounds.
