Very useful info! When to engage 4-wheel drive would have been nice to add into this. It's surprising the amount of riders I see go up a steep hill spinning all the way up! Or braking going down hill! 4-wheel drive is just as important for most of your points. Thank you for the video.

Your video's have been very helpful. My daughter and I just got into atv riding early last year, and went all in. A year later and we're hooked.

When riding the trails in WV and VA, I keep my RZR XP in low gear unless I'm going to be running consistently over 15 mph. When riding mountain trails, you encounter a variety of conditions, from switchbacks and hills that require you to slow way down, to relatively short (under 100 yards) sections that allow you to speed up to around 20-25 mph. Keeping it in low keeps the belt engaged for quicker throttle response and prevents you from constantly shifting back and forth from low to high.

Good video. I want to voice my opinion and bare in mind I'm not saying you're wrong in any way, but I personally do not like the fact that low gear is recommended for slow speeds. These things should have the power and durability to use high gear at any speed. The only time low gear should be used in my opinion is when climbing steep grades, loading on to trailers or hauling heavy loads. I don't like the fact that the belts and clutches aren't built good enough to handle high gear slow speeds. All side by side manufacturers need to very much consider designing their machines to do this, with NO EXTRA COST. Anyway that's my thought, but you are absolutely right about what you're saying, I know this from our Can Am HD5 . But I wish it weren't so.

Well, for my 21 xp1000 30 mph is my low / high gear cutoff!! Mine tops out in low at 35, so I’m guessing your 18 model has different gearing!!

My can am outlander 650 tops out at 45 in low. I stay in low unless I'm about to hit a long stretch and need speed. Belt is 8 years old with 650+ miles and is in great shape.

I love watching your videos, very helpful and you seem to know a lot about Polaris ATVs. I’m wondering if you’ll give me your 2 cents. I sunk my 2021 sportsman 850, drained water from cvt box, got water out of engine. Drove home, washed and changed fluids. Started up a few weeks later and the clutch’s all of a sudden don’t seem to disengage. Machine moves in gear and belt chirps. I took cvt box apart and inspected/cleaned clutch’s all looks ok. Have you ever heard of a belt shrinking?? Don’t know what else it could be.

put a brand new FACTORY belt in it and go from there. Its probably toast. check one way bearing...also check the primary clutch sheave surfaces if there damages from slippage while it was underwater. Also replace that. Polaris atvs have zero tolerance for water once they are swamp they get pretty F***ed.

Today was my first day with my 600cc ATV. I was in low gear the whole time not knowing any better and hit 60+… is that bad?? My trails are super inconsistent, some times I have to go 10 or under then I get a stretch where I can go full throttle. What should I have it in?

umm thats def a bit too high of a MPH for low gear. Try sicking under 30 mph your motor will thank you. You must of been hitting redline the whole time bro?
