About the cable mess, a 2 peace of cable solutions can be a shot cable going out of the camera ang a tethertool active extention 5m Usb 3,0 female to usb 3,0 male... so you can use the tether cable with more then one camera with different usb output. Hi John, thank you for your videos on Tethering. I find them informative and useful. I stumbled on something else that works for me. It appears to be a sequence of connecting and disconnecting. First I connect the camera (switched off) to my iMac. I then launch Lightroom Classic (LrC). Then turn on the camera. Next, File>tethered Capture>Start Tethered Capture. I am then able to shoot tethered directly from the iMac without turning on EOS Utility. To shut down, FIle>Tethered Capture>Stop Tethered Capture. Then I turn off the camera. At that point, I have had a couple of LrC crashes. I am yet to discover the reason. I am on Mac OS 13.1 Ventura. I have 32GB RAM. Older iMac Retina 4K 2017. I am using an EOS R6.

I've been so paranoid of tripping over cables that I hang them from hooks on the ceiling whenever practicable with bungee cords in-between to give a bit of stretch. Works for me, even shooting freehand. I actually never had problems with tethering and card reading, not in Catalina or Big Sur. Maybe because I turn off all automatic allowances just as a matter of principle, especially auto imports. But I also think that computers are like electric shavers, I never had one that I didn't suspect it would turn against me one morning... Thanks as always!

Totally understand you. maybe is too late but I just got here. I also had connection issues with my Eos R5 and Capture One, for my surprise my expensive Tethertool tether cable was the cause (I've tried 2 and got similar opinions from other photographers); last week I tried an Area51 10mts cable and worked flowlessly all day long on location and rain, tethering faster than my Tethertools (5mts) and waaay more flexible. They're more expensive but IMHO they look very reliable :)

One of the nice things about tethering is that you import the pics into lightroom AND have backup images on your disc. Removing the disc means you don't have backups. Don't remove the disc, just put newly formatted discs in the camera... problem solved.

it's very nice to hear you say that you have had the same problem I am always dealing with, I feel seen haha! So often C1 disconnects or fails to connect at the start of the shoot. I saw the error say "it could be because the card has too many jpegs" but I get that error even when I have no card in the camera. I didn't think of the Canon EOS software being a potential cause for the failed connection, it does launch immediately every time I tether. Thanks for the idea of something I can hopefully troubleshoot and solve my C1 issues because it's been so frustrating. I even bought a new cable like you did thinking that would be the fix.
@kellywoodclark3 жыл бұрын
I've also had it recently allow me to keep shooting even though the transfer stopped and those images were just lost to the air, I found that troubling since usually, it would not allow me to shoot if not transferring but now a few times it has allowed me to keep going.

Major tip.... FIrst, context: I shoot wireless tether using TetherTools Air Direct on a d850 using C1P. I found, after a long time looking, that you can actually go into C1P under Camera Settings (your cam has to be connected/recognized by c1) and then find a setting about storage. Change it from HDVRAM (something like that) to SD and HDVRAM. That will allow you to save two versions, one on the camera's sd and one on the computer - so that you can review images back of camera and your tech/ comp will have the other. One major downside of this is the file names do not match - I couldn't find a moniker in C1p that would name it what the camera names it. However, that's okay, no biggie, I'll wind up deleting the sd images. Yet, it was a huge find for me because I hated not being able to review my images while shooting. Now I can. Hope this helps you and everyone else. Message me if you need more info

Just bumped into you, John and I find your instructional style refreshingly clear and very helpful. TY! One issue I am having the hardest time dealing with is Capture 1 disconnecting from the camera when the computer goes to sleep. Just investing in a new apple laptop, the client and I would take a set of images for one outfit, I'd go help her with the second. Come back into position 15 min later, the computer would be sleeping. When C1 comes back on, it would open to where we left off, but wouldn't accept any new tethered images without me pulling out the tether plug and putting it back in!! Talk about frustrating, I did that 12 times, as I didn't know the computer was in top energy saving mode, sleeping at every opportunity. Solution: I have changed the battery, power adapter and display to stay on for an hour of inactivity before sleeping, and I'll give a new go tomorrow. Ever had that problem? Thanks again!
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karen! I think I have had that happen too, sometimes because the camera has gone to sleep. But maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing for you to turn the camera off between looks to save power and then when you open the computer and turn on the camera, it should reconnect.

As usual, these videos are so interesting and the tips are great to know, even though I don’t shoot this way. (I’m pretty much on the street most of the time). But hey, I know I’ll want to try shooting tethered sometime! If you buy cables for any reason, keep them 100% USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 or USB-4. Having USB-A in there slows the entire cable down to that ancient protocol’s data rate.
@JohnGress3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Bob! I figured that might be the case, but my transfer speeds are still reasonably fast.
@jordanbellotti1093 жыл бұрын
Ran into this exact problem during a session. Like you said, very embarrassing and a huge bummer as tethering has become critical to my work. You probably have already heard this a hundred times but I think the reason you were sometimes experience connection issues and not other times is dependent on how full the cards were in your camera at the time. I think when the cards aren't very full the camera connects with Capture One just fine but once they are full to a certain extent Capture One has a hard time connecting. So basically now I never shoot with a card in my camera. I just let it go straight to the computer via tether cable. Though, I know you have said before that it seems strange that Capture One bypasses the cards in your camera and you'd rather it also write to your cards.
@JohnGress3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jordan. I guess I didn't say it but that is what I was implying, the fuller the card the more likely problems are to develop.

Hello John, thanks for all your videos about tethering - they're so informative and straight to the point without unnecessary talking. However I have not found one thing which bothers me the most - is there any smooth way to connect Canon R5 or R6 with tablet (preferably Android device) to allow client live preview of the photos and even better with some simple rating system like in LR or C1? The ideal scenario would be to shoot photos remotely (no cables attached) and then hand the tablet to the client to let him rate the pics he likes the most. The second acceptable scenario would be similar but with cable. The reason why am I asking about tablet instead of laptop is because it's way more natural for people these days to use mobile device. Also couple times client got kinda lost during the preview and messed all the settings in LR - that's why I'm looking for something simple - swipe left/right - give a rate and go.
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Arude. I use Canon Camera Connect for this. Its great to use because like you said, everyone knows how to use a mobile app. The images stay in the camera and the app browses your card , but when you rate them in the app they mark the photos on the active disc.

Tethering is great until it isn't. I have an architectural shoot (entire house) for a design firm who wants me to tether so she can tweak/style each shot. So I am trying to convince her to just use the LCD on my Canon 5dsr. Dragging a laptop, stand and wires from room to room is not how I want to shoot. Plus, dealing with connection issues! Geezzz. It is a great way to turn a three hour shoot into a eight hour shoot. I tether in-studio for table top and some portrait, but for location, I view the LCD, with a loupe and/or OptiVisor. I may lose the job for not tethering but just don't want a tethered workflow for architectural shoots.

@bobsykes3 жыл бұрын
You’d be right at home with an H6-100. 😇 Interesting observation about the color. I found XCD-II creates the most exact replica of whatever I shot - more true to life color than any other system. More so with Hasselblad’s Phocus RAW processing program, which also has professional tethering support, but choosing the right profile in Lightroom can get colors very, very close to using Phocus straight out of camera colors. The camera and lenses, especially that 80mm, might just be too detailed. My best friend clicked 100% on a Hasselblad portrait of him and was terrified by how much of everything he saw! It’s like a microscope. Friends have told me that the latest Canon you’re using and RF glass has the best colors ever from and Canon, and obviously it’s working for your lighting and your clients!
@JohnGress3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob. Let me see which CC has 40k to spare ;) I just found the colors from Phocus to be a little to clinical, where as there doesn't seem to be a way to get non film stocks out of the Fuji (unless I am missing something). But perhaps more importantly, I shoot video too so I want to use the same lenses on my Canon C70 and B-cam with the R5 when needed.
