Having fighting game style combat in a cinematic platformer seems like it could be really cool if they got the controls right. Batman Forever and X-Perts are both known for having terrible controls though. They certainly didn't skimp on production value, which makes it odd that they wouldn't make sure that the controls work and the games are actually playable. EDIT: Comix Zone shows the idea can work really well if you've good control and gameplay at the core.

Interesting to see Street Smart on your list. I actually owned and liked this one as a random pick up , as a kid. It was one of those cases of trying to make the best out of what you got. Somehow I played it enough to beat it on Hard mode back then, but I also had much less games in my backlog back then. I tried this one again recently on emulation and now fully understand how shitty it really plays. I think it was more about exploiting the AI to win back then. Dark Castle was another one I got super cheap as a kid, and that one I HATED. Nearly unplayable.

I went through those later on emulation, just to build my KILL LIST. Horrible fighting games. The genesis one must be especially bad, because Im pretty stubborn and dont see it on my KILL LIST. I had that Batman game on the Gamegear when I was a kid and could NEVER figure out how to grapple up and down platforms. I remember playing it for hours because it was one of the few games I had, and just being stuck within the first couple minutes of the game forever. Never got past the first level.

Fantasia is, in my opinion, one of the worst Disney games ever made for the Sega Genesis. The hit detection is garbage, the music is atrocious, and the level design is incredibly confusing. I also have to add Toys (the movie with Robin Williams) and Batman Returns (not the Sega CD version). Toys is terrible because most of the projectile weapons don't work (except for a "Peanut Gun"), and the game features these security camera sections that require deactivating the cameras with a water gun before getting zapped by a laser. Batman Returns is just borderline unplayable and looks graphically boring.

Hard Drivin' on Genesis has not aged well but Sterling Silver Software (for Tengen/Atari) getting a state-of-the-art 3D arcade racing game onto the Genesis at all and without an extra processor chip like the one Sega's own Genesis port of Virtua Racing had was an impressive technical accomplishment. Race Drivin', which had two more maps, was even more impressive a technical accomplishment.

Completely agree with Batman Forever, I think the biggest disappointment on the system. Screenshots looked great, but my god was the game about as entertaining as wallpaper paste. The music was....there.. I guess, and trying to work out the grapple with a 3-button pad was ridiculous. Also, I found Ariel: the little Mermaid to be quite bad too, a strange misfire for a Genesis Disney game in my opinion. Great video as always John!

Sword of Sodan (bad port of a PC game) Socket (bad Sonic ripoff, worse than Bubsy) Tintin in Tibet (I refer you to VGRetro’s review. It’s a PAL exclusive but it was ported to Windows a few years later) Galaxy Force 2 (a lazy as hell arcade port) Turbo OutRun (why did Sega even think letting US Gold and Tiertex handle this home port was a good idea?)

I found Dark Castle really really easy. Probably because I played the original Mac version in junior high (on lab computers, nearly every day), and knew exactly how the game worked. I honestly found it better than the Mac version simply because it had color and better sound. As far as annoying sound effects, the Mac had those too. Same with the weird controls. I accept that game may be a kind of acquired taste (I played it on lab computers where there weren't many alternatives). But it's not THAT bad if you know how to play/control it.

Nothing against you, whatsoever, I actually really respect you for summitting such a steep cliff, but I'm not joining you up there anytime soon, and I do not entirely agree it wasn't that bad. There are serious faults in the climbing and jumping systems that are hard to excuse, even if you can compensate for their jankiness with practice. That said, someone should reappraise it with an eye on the technical, because there's a lot of interesting stuff going on there and I agree more people would enjoy it or at least respect it more if they just had a bit of guidance and perspective. It is mechanically flawed, but it's technically a very interesting piece of gaming history, especially for something released in 1986!

To be honest, with the rom hack called Batman Eternity, Batman Forever has become one of my pick-up-and-play staples. Never would have thought that. It removes all platforming and makes the game a straight sidescrolling beat em up.

Terminator 2: The Arcade Game was a decent port by Genesis standards but I would've rather been playing with a normal light gun instead of the Menacer, which had that awkward infrared thingy that you put on top of the screen which made it so you couldn't play too close to the screen and the Menacer never was as responsive as a straight light gun. I could see why Konami decided to package Lethal Enforcers with their own light guns instead of making it compatible with the Menacer. The only other Menacer game I ever owned was the pack-in cartridge, where they filled it with six mediocre mini-games instead of one decent game.

Oh wow I remember X-Perts.... as a big fan of the original Eternal Champions and a HUGE fan of the Seca CD port "Challenge From The Dark Side", I recall seeing screenshots of X-Perts in a magazine as a kid and then getting hyped for it... I didn't come across it again until years later from a rental store... Holy crap this game was hot garbage. What I'd pictured originally as a mission-based fighting game ended up being the textbook example of no effort... crappy controls, lackluster sound effects, no music and a boring and repetitive structure.

Two games that I (unfortunately) bought for the Genesis back in the day were terrible. These games were Slaughter Sport (Mondu's Fight Palace) and Sword of Sodan. Both of these carts were practically broken as far as play mechanics go. Genesis games were pricey for a 12 year old back then, so buying a stinker could really ruin your week.

5: MOONWALKER While the arcade version is legit good, only collectors of MJ paraphernalia will have this game and never regret it. as a game, it's mechanics (mainly the health system) make no sense and make the game no fun 4: LOTUS TURBO CHALLENGE 2 I forced myself to like this game as a kid. ALL of its "features" are fake, the RECS feature to make your own race tracks is fake, there is only ONE type of car in the game. 3: SONIC SPINBALL some of the levels are far too infuriating for its target audience. 2: LAST BATTLE: Take all of the License out of a Fist Of The North Star Game, then only give me one life to complete it = trash 1: JAMES BUSTER DOUGLAS BOXING Fantastic graphics aside, I'll give credit where it's due, its just super boring. hit detection is bad, movement sluggish, and I had NO IDEA who Buster or any of the other fighters were. was completely outclassed by the EA boxing games that followed

However, I do know of one game on the Genesis that definitely gives everyone of these dumpster fires a run for their money. Does anyone remember getting/playing Last Battle, and being confounded on how such dreadful gameplay could be created and sold intentionally? Borderline criminal, lol. I like the manga and anime but this game was insulting to the series, truly disappointing. Getting this game for Xmas as a kid in the early 90’s just had that kind of impact on me and that’s definitely one of my “least favorite” Genesis games.

I had Rise of the Robots on SNES and yes it was awful, but on Genesis I would argue that Slaughter Sport is even worse (titled Tongue of the Fatman and Mondu’s Fight Palace on other platforms). Slaughter Sport features choppy animation, bad controls and awful hit detection, making it nigh unplayable, and it makes Rise’s gameplay seem downright decent by comparison.

The worst Genesis game I rented back in the day as far as I can remember was probably Techno Cop, which had gratuitous violence but not much else going for it. I think that James Bond 007 game that was only four disappointing levels of Sega Master System-quality graphics might also be right up there. The worst Genesis game I own is probably Fantasia, which I like better than the average reputation of the game. It's a nice-looking game even if the animation is choppy compared to Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Mickey Mania, and I even have a soft-spot for the cheesy GEMS renditions of the classical music pieces featured in the original movie but to say that I could never get past the final level of the game, "Fire World" ("Night on Bald Mountain") is an understatement, I could never get past the first area of "Fire World" to be able to see the rest of it. My pick for Genesis game that I don't think is objectively a bad game but a game which I found to be very underwhelming is the first ToeJam and Earl game, a game which just feels like you're walking around randomly-generated maps avoiding animated GIFs that never seem to be much of a threat. Maybe it's just that I had never played it back in the day and only played it for the first time on the Sega Genesis Mini but I stopped playing ToeJam and Earl not because it's too hard but rather because it's so easy that I got bored halfway through.

Street Smart not a bad game per se, just ported badly. Another bad list with Batman Forever and another time I at the very least acknowledge it's good palettization for a high color video graphics into 64 colors lol, shame about the crap MK controls though since that didn't pan out in Sub Zero Mythologies either in the later day. I think probably the hype train derailed just before ROTR was to be released on Genesis, surprising it hit NA SNES though. CGI they had but knew absolutely nothing about how to make fighting games. They used to call it SGI graphics when that company dominated workstations but I think CGI sprites works for the present. ;) Funny how EC had some spinoff titles on Genesis and GG, had some big plans for it as a franchise briefly. Not sure what X-Perts is supposed to be, sure isn't Streets of Rage or Final Fight. :P Biggest missed point of Dark Castle is it's a mouse game, the whole throwing game mechanic doesn't work without one, so why port it to the Genesis. O_o??? Picked up a Mega Mouse recently but that came out in '94 but DC was in '91 so... again why port it? :\

Budokan from Electronic Arts was the worst game that I owned. I really liked the concept, but with the Genesis controller the moves were extremely difficult to pull off.

Ah, Rise of the Robots... I actually beat that when I was about 11 on an emulator. It was utter shit. Contact detection is heavily biased towards the computer, blocking doesn't work half the time, heavy attacks either do ridiculous or scratch damage, light attacks are basically useless, the controls lag during multiple inputs, and the AI straight up cheats when it starts losing. Not kidding, replayed it recently, I hit the same opponent twice in the same round, with the animation showing metal flying off them and the damage sound effect playing, and I was still the only one who took damage, despite their attack animation coming a half-second later. If it was just that bad, it'd still be legendary trash, but with how they hyped this as the "next generation of gaming..." what a disgrace.

Batman forever may be my most disappointing game of all time. I could not figure out how to use the grappling hook as a kid which meant I was stuck at the beginning of the first level for awhile before giving up. I didnt learn how until i saw the avgn episode 20 years later.

Rise of the Robots is just like that on every console it released on. The controls are just jank. I might get some flak for this, but for me, personally, 90% of games on the Genesis look like 8-bit games. Dreary, boring graphics. Even on some top notch games like X-Men. Take Batman: Revenge of the Joker. It looks like a 1:1 port of the NES version. Why? But when it excels, it excels. The Sonic games are great, Streets of Rage is still fun to this day, and Revenge of Shinobi is still one of my favorite games.

There are probably other equally terrible Genesis games out there, but I can't think of any at the moment other then maybe those Chester Cheetah games. Oh wait, I just thought of The Adventures of Mighty Max. That one definitely could have made the list.

The list of games you gave i haven't played on the Sega Gen. Batman Forever ive played on the SNEs though. Aside from that they do look pretty bad gameplay wise. Also still a sick hat you have on.
