Love your reviews, John. Appreciate the context you provide and find these videos very informative and entertaining. Glad to see all the Pink Floyd and Beatle solo reviews.

Great review John. I suspect I had a similar induction into Floyd as yourself...I heard the single of Brick in the Wall Part 2 on Top of the Pops, then my dad presented me with his old copy of Dark Side. The Wall and A Nice Pair were the first Floyd LP's I owned myself, after which I worked backwards through their catalogue. I think you're right about the album being far more collaborative than Roger ever gave the others credit for. With regards to BITW part 2, there is a version of the story (told by Ezrin himself) which is that it was Ezrin who instigated the school choir thing and presented it to Roger....I wonder what the truth of the matter is? I do like The Wall, but I think it's marred by a lack of irony. Overall I probably prefer Quadrophenia but it's a close call. Cheers.

Jeff Porcaro did some of the drumming too! I think that he was on 'Mother'. I do recall about six months at the top of the US charts for this record. Much to say about this album including the very clear sense of sadness, vulnerability, say, in 'Mother'. Loneliness, depression as illustrated musically on, 'Don't Leave Me Now', for example. The sense of parody of a big stadium rock show in the first version of 'In The Flesh' and the sense of power in the second version, along with the overall sheer sense of drama on this record. It is amazing!

Excellent review, John. I loved hearing the background behind the songs. Although this was obviously a Waters project from start to end, I would have to agree that its Gilmour's guitar work that really shines through.

Thanks. Yes it maybe Roger's baby but the rest of the band helped out 'with the education of the child' to quote Lennon out of context :- )

My favorite part of this album is the album loop. You know for the ending of outside the wall and beginning of In The Flesh? with the melody of outside the wall melody still being heard and the line "Isn't this where ("Outside The Wall") we came in ("In The Flesh?")"

Wow! “Vera” is one of my all-time-favorite Floyd songs. Thought you would have liked it much more...

This album had quite the impact on me as a teenager. Roger's lyrics are so spot on, I would put him up there with Dylan, Lennon and Cohen. He is a brilliant lyricist. This continued on through his solo work(''Pros and Cons...Radio Kaos...and, especially, on Amused To Death). The only track on this album I never really cared for was ''Young Lust''. I'm not sure why, but it always seemed out of place to me. Really enjoying your reviews John....Thanks!
@johnheaton56678 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. I think 'Young Lust' is an important number as it reflects the rock star's exuberant lifestyle before it all got too much for him (and he realised that groupies don't bring you happiness).

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the album includes a segment of the soundtrack from The Battle of Britain film - ''...Simon, where the hell are you Simon...''

Great review of a great album, thanks! I remember a funny thing, that was a long time ago. I had an audio copy of the album on a regular cassette without any artwork at all: the music was familiar to me, but I hadn't seen the album artwork yet. One mate of mine had the original LP at one time and listened to it but didn't like it so much that when I asked him what was there on the cover, he said that there is a male arse spreading all over the gatefold. So imagine how shocked I was ))). I just couldn't believe such an intelligent group as PF could do that! Then I remember I met another guy who had his own experience with the original The Wall 2LP and asked him if there was really an arse inside the gatefold. And he said: no, are you crazy, there is no arse, there is a big hole in the wall and one can see a stadium through it. Things got more complicated with a third man, who told me that the artwork was rather abstract and it depended on the viewer's imagination if he could see an arse or a judge on the same picture. It's only after I bought my own copy of the US 2LP of The Wall that I could open the gatefold and see the real image for the first time with my own eyes. Well, yes, it's quite imaginative, really, but I surely can't call it abstract ))))).

Vera is such a small song on the album but it may well be one of my favorites on the album.

Being a retired teacher, this album has always been anathema to me. I always cringed at the "we don't need no education" bit. But then, I've never been a progressive rock/Pink Floyd fan so that may have something to do with my negativity toward the album. But having said that, another terrific review, John. I do enjoy them immensely.
@johnheaton56678 жыл бұрын
Thanks David...yes I think if one takes this album literarally then it is quite offensive...but i think there are messages in here which are quite penetrating...such as kids not being told what to do etc...I personally am quite conservative by nature but can relate to this album.....and enjoy what others might say like my father 'quite enjoyoying not enjoying it' :- )
@davidgena26678 жыл бұрын
Loved that comment by your father. I have to be drawn to the music before I can enjoy an album and I just can't make that happen with this album.
@johnheaton56678 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. It is definitely one of my Dad's best quotes ever! I remember Sting criticising the single as it anti education. Although I think it's more about not being told what to do by vindictive teachers...I am sure you were not like that :- )

i thank to god that this album came to me in my adolescence.. i was about 15.. and i was just alone.. playing age of empires.. with my winamp list playing ... and then this strange songs began.. so calm.. the game that i was playing was a full screen game, so i didn't knew who was the band at first.. so calmed songs... and it was a surprise to me when i saw it was pink floyd.. but after realizing of that... when i was still playing the game... i noticed that... that strange thing that i haven't feel with other normal but souless songs... years later i would be in the Wall show at first line.. :)

Ha....no. I never got out of the 60's with the music so McCartney was safe from any descriptions of his "puerile" solo work. I did go back to the album following your review, John. I'm sorry, but I came away with the same opinion. But again, that's just me. As you said, different horses for different courses. Did I get that right or is it the other way around??? Enjoy those sayings of yours. Chestnuts....terrific!! :)

Well, I hope not. Survived 32 years in the profession and enjoyed most of them. Did a one week seminar on the music of the 60's in area schools for a few years following my retirement. The kids seemed to really like it. I say kids...most were high school seniors. Bottom line, when not teaching American History, I was spinning the vinyl at home. Anyway, keep the reviews coming.

Rick Wright did so little on the Wall he did not get a credit. Bob Ezrin, not a member of Floyd, did more. And yes the rest of the group was not really into the Wall's "concept". This was not a Floyd album. Its more a Roger Waters album with help from the other Floyds. The Wall is pompous, overcooked, and self indulgent. I am a huge Floyd fan but I rank this just above Final Cut and the rest of the fake Floyd albums - near the bottom. I can only listen to a few songs on the Wall and haven't even checked those out for years. The film is a little better at about two stars, saved somewhat by the animations. DSOTM is Waters zenith not this. I notice its often the younger kids that like the fake later Floyd albums who revere the Wall and don't particularly like most of the earlier albums. Which means they aren't really Floyd fans - but they think they are! The Wall is easily the most overrated Floyd album. Probably one of the most overrated albums period.

Overated, overblown and patchy album. A real disappointment with the exception of the singles.
