John this jig is perfect! I’m about to start a custom armoire for my newly remodeled bedroom. The upper most center drawer is 1/2”plywood with 1/4” dividers for ties & tie clips. The carcass and inside lower 3 drawers are 3/4” Baltic birch. I’ll be making all 3 jig sizes. These jigs will ensure tight accurate dados providing the strongest drawers, dividers, and shelves.

I love this. I love the simplicity of it. I often cut dados on my table saw, without a dado set, as I'm in the UK, and the short arbors don't allow them. This really is right up my street as a solution.

Yep, running a 3/4 bit in my full size router is 10x more hassle then just using a trim router. Also your not doing a full 180° engagement cut and can get a clean cut on both edges.

To quickly take out the middle bit. Just scew the router. When you contact both sides of the jig you're straight in the middle.

Nice jig! I built something very similar but I use a top bearing router bit. Adjusting the dado directly to the plywood you are using is 100% the best way to do them.

I prefer this method as well. Then you can use any top bearing bit (as long as it's smaller than the slot) and any router.

New to woodworking here. But 2 questions: 1-what stops the router from cutting the jig in the process of cutting the dado? Seems like since both are made of wood that it would just cut the jig as well? and 2 - how deep do you recommend doing the dado into 3/4 inch plywood for shelves? Thanks.

What if the "L" you made was able to pivot? You have it locked to 90 degrees. I need to make dados for an X frame table. Would I need to build a separate jig for different angles. I'm thinking a top brace that slides making 3 corners adjustable and 1 that pivots and be tightened down as a fixed point of reference. Do you think this jig will work for making an X frame?

at the end of the video, cutting the 3/4" dado you could have made the first two cuts and then rotated your router so that the opposing corners of your faceplate guided against the jig and it would have cleaned out the 1/4" remaining strip easily.

Good stuff. I'm usually on site with a jobsite saw so never bothered with a dado set. I just use a 3/4" router bit for built in shelf dados. Always so satisfying how perfectly a piece of 3/4 snugs into the slot.

Unfortunately lots of 3/4" plywood is a lot thinner than 3/4". Which if you want a sliding fit is convenient. But less-so if you want a tight joint. While you can buy plywood specific router dado bits, still it's hit or miss. I use a top bearing router bit and a similar jig to this or just two plywood off cuts depending. Always a perfect dado, custom fit to the plywood you are using.
