Desperation Mixtape You're way off base here. What makes a good drummer is your opinion. In my opinion you don't need to be flailing and fast, or have to double bass the entire song. To me Danny Carey doesn't add any junk. Every beat has a purpose and he's extremely technical. His work is fun to listen to without the music in the background. Only The Rev, Ginger Baker, Bonham, and Carey stand alone.

5:37 Jesus Christ! This part. This is the part that caught my attention when I first listened to this song so many years ago. This is the type of shit you normally hear in a Jazz-Fusion piece. I like it because as a non-drummer I find it is so confusing and unusual but also weirdly satisfying. And you nailed it. I only have a rudimentary understanding of how drums work but I bet it must have been tricky to play. Kudos, keep spiralling out!
@michmyers734 жыл бұрын
This part of the song is insanely, difficult, I agree with your words every one bit, essentially, the drums and vocals are playing five measures for every four measures played by the bass and guitar. This means that they disconnect, and then loop back around to each other, if that helps you understand at all.
@retrohipster9944 жыл бұрын
For more information on this sort of Rhythm checkout polyrhythm. Also, this sort of use of polyrhythm is pretty common in Progressive bands and djent. if you really like polyrhythm stuff like tool, I would check out tesseract. Every singer that's ever been a part of tesseract is world class and the drummer is a beast. There are some scream vocals, but mainly their stuff is just highly technical with clean vocals. --- Sorry, a quick addendum to this. I forgot that this was on Lateralus. This particular song is heavily influenced by the Fibonacci sequence. In general though, tool builds heavily on polyrhythm.

I watched this video probably well over 50 times. This is, quite literally the perfect cover, and it's of one of the best and most difficult songs ever recorded. I'm amazed each time I watch it.

You look and sound like you are really enjoying yourself and I think that's what makes this cover work so well. :)

You’re my new drum hero! I’m so addicted to Tool at so many levels, but it’s almost spiritual for me. To be able to study someone playing drums at the skill level you bring absolutely blows my mind and motivates me to get behind my drum set knowing I’ll never be able to come close to playing like you. Doesn’t matter...the inspiration is there nonetheless. I literally smile ear to ear watching your Tool covers. I hope you do every single Tool song. You are phenomenal.

Watching this was so inspiring, I felt like I was in a trance just watching you journey through this track, then that two handed stick catch at 7:18 was so uplifting to see you pull off - true passion. Fucking incredible.

One of the best drummers putting videos out to the ether via KZbin. It’s an absolute joy watching you beat the crap out of your kit, man.

Revisiting. Earlier, I used to like you the best from everyone who covered Danny Carey, but I couldn't tell what it was. This time, I see it. Your form is a lot more beautiful than all of them, and that is what any drummer who wants to be good would want and appreciate. Getting down to practice, and I'll be back one of these days when I cover this beast.

Amazing. And it gets even more amazing if you try it yourself and see how complex it is. Then you have to think that it is one thing to cover it, and another to come up with that stuff.. and it fits so beautiful in the music. just genius. thank you for showing this.

Absolutely envious of people that are coordinated enough to do this. Great job on playing one of my favorite songs. The talent it takes to play it is incredible and what’s even more amazing is Danny’s ability to write these drum beats

I love watching each and every one of your videos, especially the Tool and Deftones covers. However, have you ever given TesseracT, particularly the song Nocturne (on the Altered State album) a shot? I would love to hear your take on that song and I think it's right up your alley. And this song... I've been blown away by this song'd drums ever since seeing that video of Danny Carey playing it on his custom brass kit. Seeing the whole thing played out by you was a treat!
