The USAPA rule book for manufacturers from the EEC specifically has a clause that says any trampoline type mechanisms or any mechanisms at all inside the paddle are not permitted. The design doesn't work that way but if it did it wouldn't be legal. It certainly isn't doing what some of their videos for marketing are showing. But Joola so actually it might.

Just thought of another analogy for that second ring of U-shaped foam ... it's really similar to how the cone/driver in a loudspeaker is "suspended" by a flexible membrane to allow it to move back and forth.

Thanks as always John. There is a seriously flawed quality control process with pickleball paddles. When a given paddle can be rougher on one side than the other and paddles that are supposed to be the same roughness are all different (re: the ones you received) there is a problem. I've experienced this same thing with other paddle manufacturers. I had one paddle that also had different roughness on each side and I purchased a Zane ProXR and it came with very little grit while a buddy of mine received one with crazy grit. Not only is this a problem because when you're paying almost $300 for a paddle there should be expectations of consistency but also one competitor should not get an advantage when they are using the same paddle model.

I would be interested to see how this paddles durability is over time. If the flexing will cause issues with the core integrity or the bond between the new foam and the core could be damaged. If you are pro player you get a new paddle whenever you need. The rest of us can't buy a almost 300 paddle every few months.

I just received my coretek alpha paddle. I have not played with it a whole lot because of a foot injury but for the little bit I played, they seemed quite nice. The only bad thing I'd have to say is the grip is a really weird shape. Most grip are a bit rectangular with the long part going downward as you hold it so the wider part sits flat on the palm of your hand. Well this one is the opposite. You end up having the narrow part of the grip pallet on the palm of your hand. There's no way I could get used to that. I have never seen anything like that with a grip. I actually had to use a utility knife to cut some of the foam inside the grip to give it a better shape. It's better but not perfect. Feels very square and edgy now but better than the original

Sounds like you might need to put together a dedicated rig to test static paddle ball rebound. If distance is difficult maybe speed(with speed gun) or height. Many ways to skin the cat. Mythbusters found velocity was more consistent launching projectiles from a pressurized air cannon for instance. Meanwhile data on ball speed + paddle head speed in common situations could be handy in selecting ball speed for static paddle tests.

I am currently playing with a Mach 1 Forza 16mm. I was really interested in the Mach 2 Forza. How would you compare the Mach 2 Forza 16mm vs the Scorpeus Gen 3 16mm? Seems like the Joola is similar but with the extra pop and power that may be lacking in the Mach 2 Forza.
@wulymammoth
@wulymammoth Ай бұрын
Similar boat, but I play with a Six Zero Ruby. If you've watched Pickleball Effect's video on the Mach 2 Forza, it's quite lacking in power, but a great paddle nonetheless. The Mach 2 Forza probably needs some lead or tungsten tape to bring it to where one may like it as compared to other thermoformed non-standard shaped paddles. If you watch PB Studio's video on these paddles, you'll have your answer. Even the 16mm Scorpeus hits like a truck as compared to current paddles making it comparable to the Gearbox Pro Power. John's video here shows you how much of a challenge it could be to reset as some of these paddles are popping off 20 inches (nearly 2 FEET!) on a simple block as compared to current paddles except the Gearbox. And I'm a player that isn't amazing at resets when going up against bangers and always think counter first. I'll want to test one out before committing to one.
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball Ай бұрын
The CJ Scorpeus and M2F are very different paddles. The CJ Scorpeus is the most conrtrol-oriented of the Gen-3 lineup, but it's still a power paddle. And the M2F is a control paddle. Have you played with the M2F yet? If you're coming from a M1F, you're right in between the M2F and CJ Scorpeus. So if you want to prioritize more control, the M2F would be your paddle. Or more power/pop: CJ Scorpeus.
@wulymammoth
@wulymammoth Ай бұрын
@@johnkewpickleball I think we're overlooking the similarities a bit here. I think we could classify the Scorpeus as a power control paddle, but the swing weights across the new Gen 3 Joolas can be drastically different along with their sweet spots. How would we differentiate between the various Joola Gen 3s if we're classifying them all as power paddles? On a similar note: the dwell time with the trampoline effect seems to be more control-oriented than a Gearbox PPE it seems...
@MJDGator
@MJDGator Ай бұрын
@johnkewpickleball perfect! Thanks for your response. The M1F has never left me wishing for more power or pop. I think I am going to hold off on these G3 paddles. John, is the Scorpeus handle actually 5.25 inches? The current Scorpeus models have a 5.5 inch handle despite being marketed as 5.25 inch. If you measure a Scorpeus against a Perseus, they have the same handle length. Is that also true for these new paddles?

I love Pickleball but with these paddles it is no longer pickleball. It's a new game. I don't enjoy being hit with a ball over and over. Joola and Gearbox are on the verge of destroying the Game from the inside out. Someone at my local park already got a detached Retina from these paddles. Yes eyewear, which i wear but This has gone to far. This could be the begin-ing of the End for Pickleball. Watching it on the PPA also is not fun, points are no longer enjoyable. Yikes! I am just a 50 something womens 4.25ish DUPR and play with the softest of soft control paddles 16 mm Diadem 18k. I had scaled back from my legacy and CRBN to the 18k for better control, but today I played with a demo Tyson 16 mm with 3 grams of lead tape right at each shoulder for 3 straight hours bc I was playing lights out and could not put it down! I’ve never felt so immediately great about a demo paddle before! As the pro at the club said, as long as you’re careful to brush back of ball and play somewhat slower swing with a lot of topspin the paddle is easy enough to control. As more of a control player I was really surprised by the power it gave me without sacrificing too much control and I felt like I could wield it at the net so well. Now I’m just hoping the one I bought plays like the demo and does not become more poppy with play as the demo suggest. I am now a little freaked by the bounce test. I have passed on Kevlar Mark kinetic paddle mainly bc I couldn’t keep midcourt resets soft and low enough and it just felt heavy even though same 8 ounce weight. I didn’t seem to have too much trouble resetting decently hard shots at feet from midcourt with the Tyson but it was obviously not quite as easy as maybe it is with the soft control 18k. That said, all paddles maybe take some adjusting to and I’m pretty excited about how this one impacted my play today. Almost wish I had not watched the review😜

John, the real question on all new paddles is NOISE. I assume the 14mm are ones that wouldn't be allowed in most communities. Please include a measurement of Hrz and Db on the paddles you are testing. For pickleball to continue in many areas, the noise has to be controlled with the Hrz at 600 or below and the Db around 800 or less. I know they won't be as much fun to play with at first, but the same thing happened in tennis.
@johnkewpickleball

Interesting - my impression is that these are less noisy than traditional PP paddles. The tone is definitely lower/less pingy. But I'd like to test the Db to see

There's way too much competition out there - but the prices are still high ? Something isn't right. It might backfire. I think Rafa from Gearbox told a story about a paddle they engineered a while back. Specs were great but he said that, because the customers didn't like how it sounded when hitting, it flopped on the market side.

Obviously I'm in the market for a pickleball paddle. I started with an elongated graphite/carbon paddle that came in a set with balls and carry case. TBH, I advanced very quickly with this paddle and never felt like I was playing with a "cheap" paddle ($59 CAN$ for the set). I'm only looking for a new paddle because I have some minor wrist pain and I think a lighter paddle may prevent it from worsening. Then again, it could just be my technique, which is another thing altogether. What strikes me is that these paddles (especially once you see what's inside) can in no way be worth anywhere near what they're sold for. I think the paddle companies are chuckling all the way to the bank. How else does one company afford to sponsor not just one but five pros? The magic is in the technique, not in the technology. Although happy to watch your review (and many others) in a way you're just feeding the hype. These paddles are worth $50 tops, tech and all. Unless they put a motor in one of these. The rest of the money you pay for a "premium" paddle is spent hyping these things up. What I want to know are what the swing weight and twist weights are, maybe some of these companies can spend some money printing that on the paddles.
@McPickleness
@McPickleness Ай бұрын
You're an idiot. Yes, the cost of good sold for a totally serviceable paddle is around $15. But clearly the data speaks for itself - these paddles as well as the new Gearbox are in a league of their own in terms of the power you can generate. They are many mph higher than the best paddles that don't have the same extra design features. That has a huge effect when you're standing 14 feet away from the person hitting the ball at you. OBVIOUSLY the player's skill is far more important than the paddle. Ben Johns could beat me with a spatula. But for comparable players, paddles can certainly make a noticeable difference.

These big name brands are paying top $$ for pros to use their products, we get to "subsidize" the process with higher prices... No different from any other sport really just business/not personal. your set up for testing the rebound of the ball using the ball machine is what softball bat organizations use to test batted ball speed for new bats to max sure they pass maximum speed tests....this test may become the new norm for pickleball paddles as SPEED is going to affect the game more than other factors of the newer paddle....i think you should just standardize your testing method and give it another go....make a jig to hold the paddle like you did and just figure out a standardized propulsion method for ball delivery... in the softball and baseball bat testing, they use a ball cannon fired at 70MPH and measure the exit speed of the ball...if it exceeds a certain speed (usually 98-100 mph)it is deemed passing or failing.....whoever though a swing weight and twist weight machine would ever become a standardized measurement that is used throughout the testing community???....great job John and keep up the good work
