Great observations, John!! College football was much more exciting when conferences had regional & geographic distinctions and identity. There were traditional style differences: the Big 10 ran more and played in colder, wetter conditions, the Pac-10 passed more, the WAC passed all the time, SouthWest conf. ran the wishbone, the SEC was a blend; but cultural differences remained intact, recruiting & even small college & high-school coaching connections were regionally unique. No more than 10 teams meant that the winner of the conference REALLY was the winner of the conf. Bring back the Big 8, Pac-10, etc.!

The SEC should add Clemson and Florida State. Then they could separate from the rest of the country and then have a playoff that only includes SEC teams. They could glory in their own their greatness. They could rename their championship the Confederacy Games and be their own champion each year without fail. The rest of us could just go back to regular college football.

I am an Oregon fan. But I love college football. Hate how the Big10/SEC have been ruining the sport. I miss the Pac 12. The talk was that playing all of these new teams would be exciting... they are not. Its different when you've been playing the same teams for years and years. We expand to 12 and the SEC is whining about not getting 5th team in. The bloated Big10 has led to poor scheduling. The lack of a true post-season until now has been one of the major downfalls of this sport.

None of the P5 have any decent scheduling. While it didn't happen the SEC could have had 3 undefeated seasons. BIG 10 could have had 3 as well. I believe the ACC and BIG 12 as well. I view the "issues" these conferences are having are their own faults. There are ways to arrange the schedule to make if very likely only the conference champion can claim they are the best in their conference. Back testing to 1980 I believe, 12 teams is enough if you limit the amount of teams a conference can get in. It is enough for every team to control its own destiny (assuming the conferences don't sabotage their teams and wine about it later while blaming the system for their own faults). It is also large enough to allow teams with a loss due to tough schedule and one bad day in as well.
