Yea Glassdoor is way off. It’s crazy they even listed physician at 193k. I live close to nyc so I don’t know middle America but a few of my close friends who are doctors are clearing north of 350k at a quiet office

I also always wonder why top tech jobs don’t get mentioned in those articles - likely because they only consider salary, while tech pays most annual TC in stocks and bonuses.

Thanks for all that great info, John. Pretty crazy to think about it as an incoming new graduate student in tech. I found my calling in Product Management and in the process of APM applications. But would be curious to hear your thoughts on the distribution of talent and needs across different career segments in tech. Great video!

John, Excellent videos! Do you suggest SV Academy or Prehired to get my foot into the Tech Sales jobs? I have tons of sales experience, but none of them are related to Tech companies, this is why whenever I applied to Tech Sales positions, I have no luck at all to get in! Appreciate for your suggestions!

I feel like you answered your own question. Why don’t those articles talk about FAANG salaries? Because there’s only a handful of companies that pay like that and they’re highly competitive. Those articles are written for largely every day people. Writing about the most COMMON highly paid jobs will be more applicable to a wider audience. I completely agree it’s a fascinating subject, but I think it’s made for a separate article.

I work in software sales and last year made just under $240k and I’m only in my 20s. We make way more than the typical job, and certainly more than a large portion of people who go the medical field route. And no, I didn’t go to some top Ivy League school and have too their credentials. I have solid credentials, but not elite. And I also live in Texas, so it’s not like I have Cali cost of living. Way under represented when articles like this do pay analysis. My base salary is $130k and the rest was commission. Yes “pressure” of sales with having quotas, but when you think about it any high caliber position is going to have “pressure” and the need to do well on the job. So I think having a quota is a mute point. Software sales should definitely be talked about when discussing top career paths, including it with management consulting and investment banking. I make what people who went to Harvard make, without the credentials. I just went to a state school. My point is if you wanna make a lot of money but unfortunately don’t have the background of a top level Ivy League student, all hope is not lost. Transition into tech sales even if you have to start on the slightly lower pay grade doing a business development role. You can move up fast if you perform well and that’s one thing I love about sales

FANG salaries shouldn't be part of the national average like it is being reported. This is like putting in the Wall Street salaries that make billions a year and it will throw off the average salary for that region. When you remove the extremes you have a more accurate representation of salaries.

How can you find out what an exact title/position is paying as a salary? How do I know when I get an offer if it is fair or not according to the area/title? Any specific websites or any paid services to find out?

I worked briefly for a Sfo based satellite office from nyc. It’s a horrible experience for me. Everything is jira oriented and a very confusing workflow. Many times all I’m doing was a small change and update it from version x to y plus testing each of them. I would rather work for an investment bank. I saw the IT team in investment bank had jira used in a wrong way. Moved out of IT to business side. Enjoying working on business side. Market is volatile and u learn a lot. I’d never work for a tech company. They r very arrogant and the job is not very challenging (most of them)

Thanks for sharing! What advice would you have for someone looking to break into tech mid career? I am one of those medical professionals you mentioned nurse anesthesia provider, but after 7 years of doing that combined with the really long hours and super high stress have me wanting to make a career shift into tech. I am 38 now, have a BS in business, BS in Nursing, MS in Anesthesiology, and an MBA, so I am no stranger to studying, learning, and working hard. I'd love any advice you might have. Thank you!

Hi John, Great video, I have a phone interview coming up here for a Sr Technical program manager role at Amazon in Seattle, WA. I was able to obtain the interview by contacting a few recruiters who internally passed my resume to a hiring manager who in turn then asked for the initial interview. Any advice or help as this interview is next week would be appreciated especially since the onsite interview portion if I make it past this interview would be remote due to the pandemic.

Hi John, I have about 50k to invest into education and about a year's worth of free time. I'm very interested in getting into the big tech world for the roles, the comp, and genuine intellectual interest. I'm looking for recommendations of how to invest into education (or, project creation) over the next year and what type of role to aim for given the following priorities. (1) I would love to be remote, or location independent even if it meant a significant pay cut (not absolutely essential) (2) Long Term Rolewise I would love Product Management, because I do very well leading teams, and arranging expertise in the propper array while managing relationships. Cognitively I am very much a generalist who can really zoom in. I love learning continuously and speaking different lingos with different people, but not much for sustaining individual activity on a single thing for long long periods of time. Strategizing and Directing is kind of how my cognition is set up. (Thinking, Learning, Relating is how I would like to spend my days) Thank you for the content. Love your personality. You kind of remind me of an actor on Billions. (3) Long Term I definitely want to end up in AI Engineering and High-Level Automation
