These two Champions were the only one to just invent a completely personal way of playing tennis, starting from the wonderful service movements they created. Every shot of them was customized, with elegance and beauty. Greetings from Rome Italy.

McEnroe had one of the greatest overheads in the history of men's tennis. Incredible how he could flick his wrist/arm and generate tremendous power on the overhead even when backing up to hit the overhead.

I remember a couple of months before this Mac won 3 tournaments back to back (Los Angeles, San Francisco and Scottsdale) and with the way he played here u had real hope that he might come back and win a major or 2 again but unfortunately it was all just a bit of a false dawn. He'd lost something and never regained it!

Low bounces is what the continental grip was used for. Low bounces on concrete courts. And I saw him from the first row. Weird distorted game like his rotten personality.

@ Bren Walsh. John McEnroe's groundstrokes were not "deplorable" as you mischaracterize them (plus you used an improper adjective in describing them)! At his peak in 1984 he hit his groundstrokes superbly including his underrated topspin backhand. You don't get to a French Open final with poor groundstrokes! You don't get to the finals of a number of Har-Tru clay tournaments as McEnroe did during his pro tennis career with poor groundstrokes! McEnroe played against Lendl in the finals of at least 2 Tournament Of Champions tournaments in N.Y. on Har-Tru clay and as I recall he defeated Lendl in one of those 2 finals. The major weakness in his groundstrokes was his down-the-line forehand which he frequently (although not as frequently in 1984) mistimed and hit into the doubles alley in his singles matches. McEnroe possessed one of the greatest baseline half-volleys ever seen in tennis in which he could hit the ball at his shoe tops with tremendous timing and power! Even Lendl has stated that McEnroe was the best he ever saw at hitting the ball with power when the ball was at his feet!

Michael Barlow Why is the word deplorable improper here?
@michaelbarlow66104 жыл бұрын
@ Been Walsh. Your characterization of John McEnroe's groundstrokes as "deplorable" is an improper application of the word because the word deplorable has the connotation that something is immoral , repugnant or evil. There is nothing immoral , repugnant or evil about any player's tennis strokes. A player's tennis strokes may be strong, sound, weak, flawed, great , good or poor in technique but to describe them as "deplorable" is a mischaracterization and misuse of that word.
