Johnnie Walker Double Black REVIEW: JW + MORE SMOKE = GOOD?

I have had many big bold expensive single malts. I really like the double black. It's easy going and a great daily sipper. Good amount of smoke, and doesn't cost a mint. Like it over blue also.

This sounds like a decent whisky to have with ice. I like the regular Black a lot with ice. It's one of those drams that I enjoy when I don't want to think about what I'm having. As for blends, some really are well put together. I'm thinking of Douglas/Hunter Laing offerings, Compass Box and such. I actually have a really nice JW called "John Walker and Sons Celebratory Blend", it is made of Highland single malts and grains and comes in at 51%. It's fruity, spicy and carries a lovely amount of honey as well. Definitely one to give a go. I've snuck it into a blind tasting and blew some minds with it.

The celebratory blend is good and I also like the green. Douglas Laing has some great Blends.

I like this stuff. It's good enough for the price. I had been drinking more expensive stuff lately like Bunnahabhain 12, The Classic Laddie, Ardbeg Wee Beastie, Ardbeg 10, and when I'd take a final shot for the evening, that's when I'd take an expensive shot like Hennessy XO, Johnniw Walker Blue Label, or Chivas Royal Salute. you probably don’t get asked this a lot, but which affordable whiskey would you recommend to someone who loves gin? I’ve tried jim beam, jack daniels, and black label. Did not like any of them really. If I mask them with dashes of bitters or vermouth they’re ok. But I want something that feels good alone.

My favorite Johnnie Walker blend is the Blue Label. Obviously it is my least favorite in terms of value. $250usd is absolutely absurd for a blend. However, if it were $50 a bottle then it would be my daily drinker, hands down. I would be curious to know what you think of Blue Label on the nose and palate minus the cost, marketing and prestige. Any thoughts?

I'm not a huge fan of JW in general. They're all OK. The blue does taste more premium. Value aside, it's definitely an easy sipper. If it was cheaper I'd have no problem drinking it!

Sipping on Ardbeg 10 as I watch this video. Double black is only about $5 less than Ardbeg, never tried JW anything and can't get myself to waste money on it.

Hi Geoff, i really like the green label, but there is the origins series of the black label 12, originally as travel retail but not widely available. There 4 of them coming from highlands, speyside, islay and lowlands, which are all in the regular black label. All except the lowlands are pure blended malts and all have 42% ABV. I really like the highlands origins of the series. It's like all good taste from the green except for the smoke. I did not try the others yet. Hope you can try them some time. Greetings

ok now its the time.single malts are getting really expensive so maybe we have to go to blended whiskyes or blended malts.idea for a video series :Good blends..you dont see that anywhere....that dont brake the bank.best i´ve tryed are monky shoulder and J&B....just an idea for something new in the world of Whisky.....i would love to see rundown of Johnny walker from you..all labels..

Do you rate blends on a different scale than single malts? I myself basically can't do it on the same scale because for me even the more expensive blends are usually worse than cheaper single malts but it might be just me

Hey Jeff I watched your review today of Johnnie walker double black. I have had JW in the past 12, 15 and it’s not that I look down on blended scotch as whole but I don’t like Smokey scotch’s. I prefer aberlour , macallan, and Spey side single malts

It's all personal preference, isn't it? I'd take any of the single malts you just mentioned over something like JW myself. Even if you did like peaty whiskies, there are better options out there than this. Thanks for watching!

Great Review Geoff! I honestly don't like this whisky. The Green label is way better, as you mentioned. For a peaty kick, I believe the budget islay whiskies do a better job. Cheers!

Good review, to me I never find that many flavors, as you find in this review, but it's an ok whisky,here in NW Arkansas cost 48$ plus the killing sales of 13%, I usually get here Oban little bay way way better for 45$,

blend : why ? . . . JW RED is my fave : cos it is CHEAP and for my Infinity (left-over) bottle of Single Malts on Jan 15 after Xmas/New Yr, it will do just fine with 40% for the tumbler . . . until SPring ! then rums kick in

two main problems with Johnny Walker, #1- their cheapest offering, the Red label, is terrible, to a new Whisky drinker, they may try this and swear off JW forever. BUT the next step up, the Black label is quite good. #2 - the labeling system is arbitrary and counterintuitive - if you dont take the time to specificialy research what each "label" is, you cant easily find the difference, ESPECIALLY since their is so little info on the bottle.
