It's just like in 9 thru 11. In 9, Johnny acts like the comic relief, but by the end of 9 onwards, he goes through a lot of character development especially when he becomes a dad and then years later divorce Sonya to focus on raising Cassie alone. (Not sure if you've read the MKX comics, but it's either shown or at least mentioned that Johnny had to celebrate Cassie's 1st birthday without Sonya, who is apparently too obsessed with her work and not spending time with her family)

His arcade ending is canon. The arcade endings are Epilogues for every character showing what became of them after MK1 main storyline. So Johnny did become a movie director and made a successful career creating the Mortal Kombat series in this new Mortal Kombat timeline but currently majority thinks it is all fiction for now. Though certain governments are becoming aware about this being real as shown in Kenshi ending when Kenshi met Jax (in this timeline he works in the FBI) and help found the paranormal division for the FBI.

I always liked Johnny's development and how raiden (earth realm protector version) and liu kang (current god version) both basically say he's a slhero and he hasnt realised it yet. He's that annoying guy who thinks hes funny, cocky etc but deep down is a very good person and eventually wise up, becoming an excellent role model (once het starts realising how everything is really serious). He's great at fighting and he really cares. It also takes a lot for him being the cocky individual to eventually mellow and admit what he has done before is wrong. You literally see how annoyed mid age johnny was with his past self and how he scolds his past self. As an audience i like both versions. The cocky young cage was funny in my eyes and how he hits a nerve on others. The wise up version is a nice mature guy who can help and guide others etc

Honestly, this is going to be an unpopular opinion but Johnny's relationship with Christina already has miles more chemistry than he ever had with Sonya in my opinion. Chris genuinely loved and appreciated him but couldnt take the man she loved becoming more self absorbed and spiraling down hill. I wish they could have worked out their problems. Sonya seemed to dislike him intensely for 80% of the time they were in proximity of each other. I honestly want him to be with someone other than Sonya this time around.

I liked Sonya/Johnny but yeah, they weren't a very good couple. I honestly don't think Sonya disliked him. She acted like she did though, probably because she was embarrassed by him. Which is almost worse. But I thought Sonya's story of struggling to just enjoy things and love people, not to mention her commit issues to anything other than the military, was interesting. And Johnny struggling to hold together a marriage and raise Cassie almost on his own was pretty sad but also had an interesting effect on his character. Despite how unhappy they often made each other, I think them getting back together after the divorce was sweet and a sign that they both learned to be content and put family and their daughter over their own bullshit problems. Ultimately, I don't mind Johnny and Sonya dodging all the drama this time around. But I do think it's fucking tragic that that means Cassie will be erased from existence. Both Johnny and Sonya would go through a lifetime of sorrow in order to protect her.

That sorta burden doesn't leave much room for learning how to be a family woman, especially with how much her military life has shaped her into someone with expectations to get the job done no matter what. So I don't think she's intentionally being toxic. She's just...out of her element when it comes to family stuff.

Johnny has a lot of personal growth in MK1, so a lot of these suggestions about how the future might play out make sense. This is how I see it. Johnny decides to live a smaller life, becoming a director and taking smaller acting jobs on the side, for fun and to pay the bills. He sells the mansion along with a lot of the crap he bought, and buying a smaller, but still classy apartment, it is still Johnny Cage after all. He and Christina talk it out, but agree that it’s never going to work, and remain friends. He eventually meet a beautiful marine biologist named Sonya Blade. Even though she is dismissive at first of the idea of dating a celebrity, she decides to give him a chance after he shows his ego has also downsized. They eventually fall in love, get married and have a daughter named Cassandra. In this timeline, as Cassie grows she decides to become a police officer, where she meets two people who become her closest friends, Jackie Briggs and Takeda Takahashi. If she becomes a cop, she would still learn hand to hand combat and how to use firearms, excelling in police defence classes on her own merit and not because of who her father is. So she would have both her parents looks, her mothers intelligence and kindness, and her fathers martial arts proficiency and sense of humour. I think that if they did decide to bring Sonya and Cassie into things, this new backstory might work for this timeline.

I may be imagining the second one. 🙂 Not sure who she was talking to, but what Sonya would be doing if she wasn’t in the military came up. She said she would’ve been a marine biologist. Maybe someone could verify this one. Anyway, with this one being a new timeline, it makes sense that she would take that path.

For MKII I can see Lui Kang getting involved with special forces making a task force to monitor the universe for any new universal threats. The Shirai Ryu and Shoalin get introduced to SF and they all tell Johnny that they love riffing on his movies but Sonia says she actually likes them and fangirls out a bit. Sort of have Sonia start off a little more likw Cassie and she eventually grows into the cold soldier throughout MKII.

It's the tragic reality for what Hollywood can do to people. The expectations Johnny had on his shoulders, his desperation to keep clinging to his fame as it's the one thing allowing him to live the good life, and of course the need to project his success given how superficial Hollywood often is, especially nowadays. Cris realized how he was letting it all change him for the worse. He wasn't John Carlton anymore. He was letting his Hollywood name overtake the man she loved. And his coping mechanism, chugging shot after shot of alcohol to try and keep his mind off of the grim reality of his life falling apart all around him, didn't help things. Johnny knew it too, but couldn't bear to look at it for what it was until Cris walked out on him.
