No one will ever top Johnny Carson. He is forever the gold standard.

To illustrate your point, as a last request from a dying legend, David Letterman with the help of Tonight Show Producer, Peter Lasally, gave Johnny the job of writing the monologues for Letterman's opening each night. So, for the last month of Johnny's life, the opening monologue that Letterman gave was actually written by Johnny Carson. A fitting tribute to the best late night host that has ever been.

I'm so pleased you posted this. I actually won this jacket in a 1988 Muscular Dystrophy Association charity auction but in all these years had I never been able to find a photo or video clip from the night of the show the floral print jacket was worn (a Ralph Lauren Polo 39R. Listening to Johnny talk about the Dow Jones dropping 39 points and how that was a big deal, we have to realize that in 1982, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 777. Between 1982 and 2000, the Down Jones Industrial Average increased over 1,500%. That's insane!

39 point loss? Doesn't even compute on the top 10 losses. Oct. 29, 2008--fell 777 points.... The 1929 crash when DJ stood at 381 pts and it fell by 121 points for a loss of 38%; by the time the crisis ended on November 11, it fell by 40%. Again that was when the Market stood at something 381 pts in 1929. So 39 points was barely a ripple even by 1982 standards.

I looked it up and Columbia was delayed 7 times. It finally launched on January 12 which was a Sunday and he never is on on Saturday night. Therefore it had to be before then. Columbia was scheduled for Wednesday, January 8, so since he said they were going to try tomorrow, I suspect that this is from Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1986. It though was delayed also, thus the January 12 launch.

39 points? psh. Amateurs.
@damachine34 жыл бұрын
1:53 It wasn't that big of a drop because in percentage terms there was no comparison. 39 points only amounted to 2.5% drop since the Dow was much higher then (the 38-point drop in 1929 equated to a 12.8% decrease because the Dow was much smaller then). For example, today the Dow would have to drop 650 points to equal a 2.5% drop...since it's at 26,270 as I write this. Very misleading. As far as 2.5% is concerned, especially given how the market moves in current times, it's surprising that that was any cause for concern.
@damachine34 жыл бұрын
Quote from the papers on January 1986, when Johnny made this comment... "The Dow, which finished at 1,526.61, lost 39.10 points, or nearly 2.5 percent. The drop was the worst in the blue-chip indicator's history, exceeding a 38.33-point decline on Oct. 28, 1929, when the market was in the midst of the collapse that preceded the Depression. But in percentage terms, yesterday's decline was much less than the drop in 1929: In that decline, the Dow lost 12.8 percent."

The Rams played the Bears in Chicago on Sunday, January 12, 1986. Columbia was first scheduled to launch on December 18, 1985 but was delayed 7 times before its eventual January 12 launch. It was scheduled to launch on January 8 but was delayed again, so since he says, it's supposed to try again tomorrow morning, that means that this broadcast was from Tuesday, January 7, 1986. The Space Shuttle Columbia (mission STS-61C) finally launched on January 12, 1986. It was the last flight of a Shuttle before the Challenger Disaster (mission STS-51L) on January 28, 1986.
