Legendary engineer and producer, David Ferguson talks about his friendship with Johnny Cash.
"Ferguson's career began in the mid-1980s engineering country music recordings for "Cowboy" Jack Clement, at Clement's Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa, in Nashville, Tennessee. Today, Ferguson is best known for his works with Johnny Cash, as sound engineer on the highly successful Grammy Award-winning American Recordings albums produced by Rick Rubin, in the 1990s and 2000s (decade). Ferguson has also engineered or produced recordings for such artists as folk music legend John Prine, bluegrass music artist Mac Wiseman, Sturgill Simpson, The Del McCoury Band, country music legends Charley Pride, Eddy Arnold, rock-n-roll band U2, and many others. Ferguson appeared as himself in the U2 film, Rattle and Hum, and portrayed his mentor and once real-life boss, Jack Clement in the Jerry Lee Lewis film, Great Balls of Fire!." -Wikipedia

So many songs are so great, and as a consequence, it's hard to chose one. I pick an outsider: I'm allright now. I really love this song for many reasons. It's personal, straight from the heart, and performed with a wounderful beat. The composition is dynamic, and of course, Johnny Cash voice is so brilliant. I will also thank you Otis for the video that you're posting here. It was just as great as your videos always are.

My favorites are Folsom Prison Blues and Get Rhythm….This is a story of the one and only time I got to meet Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. The year was the summer of 1984 in my little home town of Camden Arkansas located 100 miles south of Little Rock. I was 17 and going into my senior year of high school. The reason Johnny was in town was because he was in the miniseries, North and South, and they were filming just outside of Camden at a placed called Reader Railroad. Waylon supposedly just got out of rehab for cocaine and was just hanging out with Johnny at this time. I met them both at a small little Mexican restaurant called Taco Tico in Camden. I saw Johnny’s big bus parked to the side as I walked in. I got in line and placed my order and while waiting I saw Johnny and Waylon sitting there at a table. I knew both legends were in town since my little girlfriend and her mother were extras in the movie. They filmed primarily at night. A couple of nights before on the movie set my girlfriend’s mom danced with Waylon during a break in filming. I went over to Johnny and Waylon’s table and instead of saying something like, “Hi it’s great to meet you” or “l’m a huge fan”I turned to Waylon and said, “I heard you were dancing with my girlfriend’s momma the other night.” You should have seen the look on Waylon’s face. He stood up and said, “What the hell are you taking about boy.” At this point I was getting concerned so I had to do some fast explaining that she was an extra in the movie and described what she looked like etc. He then started smiling and laughing and said “Ok, yes now I remember.” I am glad he remembered because I surely didn’t want to get on the wrong side of Waylon lol. At the time, I only weighed 125 lbs and Waylon and Johnny physically looked like giants in my eyes. I shook both of their hands, finally told them I was a huge fan, picked up my food and was on my way. That is a day I surely will not forget!

I can't get the grin off my face or the giggle outta my heart about the shaving cream on the pumpkin pie! Johnny Cash was a good ol' boy from the get go. I can only imagine that this story is only the tip of the iceberg of some of his antics over the years. Thanks for sharing with us Otis. My favorite J. Cash tune is "Ring of Fire" but I can't really say it's that much better to me than so many others. Some of his songs just told the story so well or was just plain funny that you can't help but like them; as with "Boy Named Sue" and the multi-Year Cadillac.

Johnny's the pride and joy of Arkansas, my neck of the woods. Although I was born right outside Nashville, I was raised in Arkansas from the time I was 3. I take a lot of pride and love in the fact that Johnny's from where I'm from. Favorite Cash song would have to be Get Rhythm.

Cannot pick a favorite song as I am a huge fan of Johnny Cash. A few years ago I sought out and found Johnny's boyhood home near Dyer Arkansas before it was a museum. Got directions from a kid on a dirt bike on a gravel road. I have been back twice to the now Museum of Johnny's boyhood home. Man that is some delta country.

He walked the line, slipped more than his share of times and GOT back up again. A 50's bad ass! A sixty reborn rebell! A re-born acoutic star later in life. Cheers Otis for another awesome interview. 👌

I grew up around Welch,Oklahoma. On the edge of town there was, and I hope still is, a sign that said "Welcome to Cash Country, Johnny - June", the little civic center in town was build for Johnny Cash to play at when he was in town. He was friends with Bill Patch who had a mansion outside of town and who had the "One Piece At a Time" Cadillac built for him. Oddly enough Roy Clark had a place just outside of Welch as well.

One of my first memories in life involves Johnny Cash . In 1963 0r 64 Johnny played Frontier City in Oklahoma City . I was on my dads shoulders and The Man was right in front of me . I was maybe 3 or 4 but the picture is still vivid in my mind . I asked my dad about it before he passed and he said Johnny was Hung Over bad and was only wearing one boot lol. Im so glad my dad was music fan and took me to shows w him . ☮️💚☕oh yeah , Mean Eyed Cat is a winner :)

So many let their stardom go to their head and don’t realize or don’t care what they mean to their fans. But so many do, and take the time to greet and mingle with their fans. I have been fortunate to meet many who have been gracious and genuinely friendly. To name a few, Marty Stewart and his band, John Denver, Huey Lewis, Sammy Hagar, Jay Leno, Gary Pucket, Johnny Rivers, Jan Berry and Dean Torrance , Joe Bonamassa, Reese Wynans, we’re all very gracious. After rescuing surf guitar player Dick Dale from an overly excited topless groupy, Dick invited my wife and I down to his home. Never got to meet Johnny Cash however I did meet his mother and brother at his museum. He knew what he meant to his fans, and respected them! Thanks for putting this up Ottis!

I worked at a venue as an electrician when Clint Black had just had his first big song. He came to do a show and came a day or two early and the roadies were working on exactly how they were going to set up the stage and tear it down. He was there and made sure that when anyone came by he looked them in the eye and smiled and said hello. I told someone that he was going to make it big, they asked how I knew and I said he knows that without fans he is nothing and he knows it is the little things that people remember. There were lots of other big acts that came and went and not too many of them took the time to make sure everyone knew they cared. I always thought Johhny Cash's ability to let you know he believed in what he was singing and could make you believe it was his best quality. Ira Hays is a prime example of that, what a powerful message and no one could have ever done it better.

For me it's hard to think of a better Johnny Cash song than The Folk Singer. Blows me away every time I hear it. Especially after any significant amount of time between visits. I do wish more of the greats took a similar route that he did in his twilight years by connecting with Rick Rubin and putting out all those incredible stripped down covers for American Records. So grateful for those albums. Would be incredible if we got the same albums from the likes of Waylon, George or maybe even Kris?

That is so cool, talking about the guitarist on a George and Tammy record (country music royalty in my estimation). I saw the Johnny CASH show in a huge outdoor venue and it was epic indeed. I wouldn't have been a bit surprised if Cash had ridden out to center stage on a horse. Thanks always Otis . Hello Otis, an after thought to add...Somewhere in my gray matter, accurate or not, I recall reading or seeing somewhere that Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails that wrote the song "Hurt" (And that must not be forgotten that he wrote this amazing song) When approached about Johnny Cash doing his version of it initially did not want to grant his blessings on doing so. As I remember hearing this he felt if he allowed Johnny to do it that the song would no longer be "his" That if Jonny did it he'd "own" the song so to speak. In the end of course he gave his blessings to Johnny doing it, I mean how does one tell "JOHNNY CASH!" no you can't do my song right. And of course Johnny did "own" the song when he finished it just as he usually does. If memory serves me well Trent also said out of respect to Johnny his band quit performing said song at their concerts (Which happened to be one of their greatest crowd pleasers) Because it had become "Johnny's song" not theirs...If this is true how amazing is "THAT"? Ed Brashear

Years ago my parents were staying at a hotel in Elkhart, Indiana while visiting my aunt and uncle and their room happened to be on the same floor Johnny and June were staying. Apparently, because they were about the same age, they got up for breakfast at the same time and rode the elevator with them for three days straight. My folks said they were nice a could be and just shot the shit with them. My parents weren't big country fans, so they didn't think much of the encounter, just like they'd met anyone else, but my maternal grandfather was a huge fan and flipped shit when he found out his daughter had met Johnny and June.

Another great video. Thanks for doing what you do, Otis. My favorite Johnny Cash song changes constantly, but I've always loved "Big River" and "25 Minutes To Go." I also really like the stuff he did at the end of his career with Rick Rubin. On a side note, this past weekend a friend asked me what my "Mount Rushmore" would be of American musicians. Sometime when have nothing else going on, I'd love to hear whom you would pick. I think I'm locked in to Robert Johnson and Bob Dylan, but nobody else is definitive yet. On the surface it seems like an easy question, but it's actually quite hard to pick four.

i can echo these sentiments and the praise of folks who behave like this with recent tales...having gotten the chance to have Kevin Shinyribs Russell generously zoom in live to my lil community radio show our of madrid new mexico before Shinyribs gig in santa fe in june, he wound up chatting live for almost 2 hours and was amazing inspiring fun and the same in real life as he spent most of their day in town before and after the show chiliing with my goofy ass....Kev is now a friend...in touch...great dude...and later in july brothe Hayes Carll gracious generously did apre recorded zoom chat with my silly butt for what was gonna be 20 mins and became almost 30..... though weve had on line interactions during Quarntimes and id met him in the past in santa fe randomly on occasions he had no cause to recall, mostly cuz i used to wok at a venue he and many of those cats played all of whom were always gracious in meeting the weirdo who worked in the box office and would offer to help em gte drinks or whatever....anyway brother hayes happened to see me when he was being walked to stage and said hello Stephen, I happened to wind up at his feet for the entire show stuck happily in a speaker bath and had i tried to move much less turn aorund the hundreds of people behind me...well i didnt even turn around anyway then thanks to a monsoon i was waiting to end under the water tower instead of walking to my car in the pour, he happened to return from wherever theyd taken him to help the band finish pack up....there he took the time to shake my hand make real eye contact...words weent much needed other than genuine thanks for everything.....so yes it mattes a lot.....-SJOCR

I'll give you a couple Otis. A little more obscure than some people are picking. Cisco Clifton's Filling Station and Wayfaring Stranger. I'm a huge fan, since I was a little boy. I remember the TV Show and always tuned in. Started asking for the albums, which were sold at the local hardware store. Pro Hardware. I got them for Christmas, I got them for my birthday. So, long before I became a Bob Dylan fan, I was listening to Johnny sing It Ain't Me Babe on some anonymous compilation. Loved the booming voice, loved June loved alot of the performances on the show. Then, as I get a little older I started listening to Top 40 radio. I sort of stopped listening to Johnny Cash. By the early 1980's I was getting into all sorts of acts, including Bob Dylan. The radio hits but also,, The Times They are A Changing. That sort of stark performance was very dramatic. Just like Johnny Cash. Then I start reading how Bob loved Johnny Cash. Then I see Johnny play at Ontario Place in the summer of 1987. Loved it. Then, just as Columbia dumped him they also put out a box set; The Essential Johnny Cash. By this time I was buying probably 200 cds a year. Keeping friends who are really into music and making new ones. A nice cool club. Always another tune to hear. Another show to see. Anyways, I bought the box set and really fell in love with it. Lots of songs from when I was a boy and new ones that I had never heard. Cisco... is a narrative about a service station that the modern world seems to be passing by. And for me, because I worked in a service station between high school and university, I really identified with the setting. It's really good. See Ruby Fall is right next to it on the cd and it's also wonderful. Wayfaring Stranger is from American III. It's about as stark a song as you could find. It reminds me of Dylan's performance of Rank Strangers from one of his poorer albums in the 1980's. I lost my father after that album came out. The sentiments of Wayfaring Stranger seemed to fit his journey and indeed, the journey we're all on. I actually wanted to play it at his funeral but I didn't want to impose. The starkness of such a song is not an easy sell for lots of people, including a younger me. But between Johnny, Dylan, Bruce, Tom Waits and lots of others I have enjoyed I always have a good appreciation for those kinds of songs. American Records could not have been a better final chapter The Fabulous Johnny Cash. He certainly was. p.s. One more. My brother and his late wife bought American IV with a video of Hurt After watching the video Barb said "Wow, that's sort of grim." My brother replied "Oh, he's always been like that." My brother had heard enough Johnny from when his little brother had played those albums from 30 years previously. That's my favourite review of all time.

I took my parents to see Johnny CASH at that Ontario Place concert. They loved it. I still remember the two trumpet players when he sang Ring of Fire, one of the truest love songs ever written.

@@3340steve I remember those horn players too. The practical side of me always thought, how can Johnny afford to bring two horn players to play on one song? I think there are horns on Understand Your Man but not much else. Then I read years later that Lyle Lovett hired local musicians to play when he came to town. Springsteen and the Stones did the same thing with a string quartet (New York City Serenade) and a choir (You Can't Always Get What You Want). That would be a cool gig for some TSO trumpet players. "You're going to play with Johnny Cash on a Saturday afternoon." Very different than the usual.
