"Rusty Cage" was covered by Johnny Cash on the 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and Cash's version earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. During at least three live performances by Soundgarden (July 21, 1996, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Forks In The River, early November 1996 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, and at Soundgarden's last pre-breakup show at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 9, 1997[15]), Cornell introduced the song with a dedication to Cash. On Cornell's Higher Truth acoustic tour in late 2015, he started including "Rusty Cage" in the set-list, employing Cash's country-rock arrangement of the song.

This has to be one of the most underrated rock songs. It has such an aggressive yet clean sounding instrumental to it. I have a pretty serious sound system set up in my car. And when an acoustic guitar can make the speakers work hard like this song does, you know it’s something good! When the switch up comes in this song is incredibly balanced on all levels of bass, vocals, mids, and highs. It’s truly something amazing to listen to on a good system. And the way johnny sings the lyrics just makes it a perfect combo of instruments and vocals.

Sal: How we doing tonight Ferguson? Family good? Ferguson: They’re doing great, Mr. DeLuca. My boy Tommy, he’s almost six now Sal: Ain’t that swell? Ferguson: Hey Finn, you got that tip for Saturday’s race yet? Finn: I’m working on it, right now Weasel: Ahh, uagghh Billy: You gonna shut him up, or do I gotta do it? Ferguson: You know the rules, Handsome. No talking. Sal: 9:35, the Weasel launches into his song and dance routine. Ferguson: Dammit Arlington! Weasel: You gotta get the doc, uuaaggh Ferguson: Better be the real deal this time *Weasel kills Ferguson* Sal: Once the weasel gets the keys, we move onto stage two. Sal: Let’s get moving. Billy: Here ya go, fellas. Courtesy of the warden’s private collection! Weasel: Did the boys in the laundry stash the parts? Billy: Of course they fucking did. *Zombie Ferguson shows up* Weasel: What the fuck? I killed him! Billy: You’ve been in the joint too long, Al. You’ve forgotten how to get shit done. Ferguson: HYAAAAA! *Billy shoots zombie Ferguson* Ferguson: Hya! Billy: What the fuck? *They all begin shooting Ferguson until he dies once again* Weasel: This ain’t right, something weird’s going on here.
