♫♪ Oh do you remember Darth Plaguies the Wise? I thought not, you'd not hear it from the Jedis, He used the dark forces, for creating life, Perhaps the Sith powers could help save your wife. He had so much power when using the force, But he couldn't stay strong forever, of course. His apprentice, with whom all his secrets were kept, Betrayed Wise Darth Plaguies, killed him while he slept. You can't learn this skill from a Jedi because, The Jedi believe it's against nature's laws, Darth Plagues's tale is of great irony, He saved everyone but himself, tragically.♫♪

I'd never heard some of these lyrics! The last part, about the divorce? Wow, new t me. My mother loved this song and I gladdened her heart one day when she was in her 90s by playing Sweet Betsy on guitar and singing it for her. She died when she was 101 and I treasure that memory. Johnny Cash grew up in Dyess, Arkansas two counties away from where I've lived most of my life. There's a great version of this by another Arkansas native-- Connie Dover, born in Jonesboro, AR. The Boston Globe called her America's greatest singer of folk ballads since Joan Baez.

ALL Cowboys/Pioneers carried pocket Hohners for their EZ-to play/ sweet music. He taught me ALL the lyrics, too. Have to explain to NewHumans the EXTREME Pioneer importance of a Tall Shanghai Rooster (alarm clock) & a BIG yaller Dawg. Hens can always be found later to turn kitchen-slops into eggs, Dawg is your night Alarm-system. City-Betsy give out when low on water, endless dry prairie/ eye-burning Sun ahead. Now for those Night-COLD, pack-yer food, Pick-yer-Pass Mountains.

To all you'll youngsters commenting that you're only here for social studies.....this is about the Oregon/California trail which was a huge deal in American history from like 1840-1869. It is actually super fascinating and, fun fact: my elementary school teacher who always played this on the piano told us this song was about one of the few episodes of cannibalism crossing the Cascade Mountains......yes.....they got so cold and so hungry the pioneers had to have a bite of their former husband/brother/cousin... I am not making this up tho I may be confusing the song but Sweet Betsy From Pike is still about the same point in history of crossing over the mountains

Try these lyrics. The tune accompanies them wonderfully. O lover eternal to whom we belong Your name, it is holy. Your kingdom is come. Your will both on earth and in heaven is done. You meet with our needs satisfying each one. The sin that we live in we pray you forgive As we forgive others, so they too may live. So send no temptation. Cause evil to end O kingdom, and power and glory, Amen!
