His album with John Coltrane should be required listening for every human being - easily one of the greatest albums of all time; if you've never heard it get it - includes this classic, and Lush Life - I've played his stuff a thousand times, and I never get tired of it...
@amymalina5073 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. That album with Coltrane is one of my favorite albums of all time. Desert Island, required listening for the world. Maybe we’d have world peace after that.

What a voice. Most people never heard of Johnny Hartman but he was one one of the most smooth and beautiful male voices that was up there with all the greatest.
@direfranchement15 жыл бұрын
Hartman has my heart forever. No other man sang these standards with as much unpretentious ardor and grace. He renovates a ballad, delivering with an unmatched masculine tenderness, wrapping his marvelous voice around the lyrics and releasing them with an intimacy of intense heat that never scorches but only soothes. This performance exemplifies his mastery of the idiom and the time-defying integrity of his art.

What a wonderful vocalist! Never really got his due. His voice is pure magic. Almost doesn't sound real. Folk just ain't supposed to sing like that. And what about Sammy Davis on the Vibes!! Real talent! No auto tune, just pure beautiful talent. If you didn't know what magic was before, you know now!
@legrandbakker68797 жыл бұрын
Undeservedly underrepresented...Johnny was all class and spot on elegant in every way. His phrasing is on a par with Nat Cole and Sinatra. Also resplendent in tux and understated attitude. So long Mr. Hartman...Just dropped by to say hello.

I cry every time I watch this performance by the majestic Johnny Hartman. Check out his work with John Coltrane ASAP
@infrantasi10 жыл бұрын
Sammy Davis Jr. was most talented entertainer there ever was before Michael Jackson. I was 16 when he came back to Buffalo for a solo concert, and I was crying like a baby, just from the overwhelming presence of Sammy, singing his heart out not 10 feet from me. Hartman makes your heart hurt when he sings, and he was a Mega Hunk to boot!
@vincenzomarsden9259Ай бұрын
That's absolutely true. He tapped with his brother and family and was discovered by the the Nicholas Brothers as a group, but Sam was Sam and he couldn't help himself. A true entertainer. See him later in life with them and Gregory Heines; he always reflects the old ages of tap in step. He'd lived a beautiful life and stood against it all. He had Frank fucking Sinatra in his corner against all comers and married a white woman before it was cool. But Johnny's got a voice that can melt gold and throw the world to the wind. Watch Clint Eastwood stand in from of Merle Streep in the rain and listen to that sound and tell me another word.

This was from the Tonight show when Sammy Davis was a guest host, it may have been when Carson was getting ready to take over the show and they had a series of guest hosts, it was around spring 1966, and I saw it live when it first was broadcasted. I had never heard of Hartman and when I saw this I immediately ran out to buy his album. Just a great singer, totally underappreciated! A combination Billy Eckstein and Arthur Prysock but better than both!

To Joe Garcia -- you obviously do NOT know that Frank Sinatra was the one who gave Sammy Davis Jr. a chance and notoriety in the music business -- AND set him up in his home in very white Beverly Hills! -- Sinatra was anything BUT racist! Never was. I love Johnny Hartman's voice, which was a little bit lower than the usual baritone -- just beautiful!

One of these days Clint Eastwood will no longer be with us. When we talk about him, I hope he will be remembered not just for the acting and directing but also for his love of Jazz. Why bring up Clint? Bridges of Madison County - that soundtrack used songs from Johnny Hartman and brought him to the attention of many people who never knew the richness of that voice.

What a great performance by one of my very favorite singers of one of Larry Hart's most haunting lyrics. Up until now, I've always thought that Bill Henderson's recording was the definitive one; this performance is causing me to reconsider! According to Johnny's biographer, this show was taped Feb 13, 1966, and broadcast three weeks later. Hank Jones is the pianist and Milt Hinton is on bass.
