Sixty years ago today, Johnny left us. A drunk driver (who served no time in prison) took the life of an incredible singer and songwriter. North To Alaska had entered the Billboard charts 47 days earlier on September 19th, 1960. I shall NEVER forget Johnny Horton!!

He was a very talented artist with his own sound and originality no one will ever be able to recreate him he has left his mark that no one can recreate . I was sharing a hospital room at VGH with a man who suffered a stroke. He barely had any reaction to anything the day he came in. Studying psychology, I knew that music was a powerful way to heal and facilitate brain activity. I explained this to his wife and asked him what his favorite song was. She told me it was this one. Coming from Austria, Alaska was what he thought Canada was like so he used to listen to it before he came (He moved to BC). Half way through the song he was able to break out a smile as his wife took his hands and danced beside him to this song. I will never forget that day. I hope he is better now as I left before him. But reading some of these comments, I thought I would share the power of music.

I was stationed at Ft. Carson, Co & I got orders to go to Ft Richardson, Alaska. Some of my buddies laughed at me and some wished they were going to Alaska. Went to Jack Frost for a couple months from late December 1978 - February 1979. I was assigned to the 23rd Engineer Co and we maintained the Ice Bridge. After all that, I met my wife in Alaska. I was from North Dakota & she was from Kentucky. She had The Johnny Horton album with all his hits. We have been married over 40 yrs now.

Ying Tzu I believe it is also about one's age when it comes to these songs especially as old as they are because especially to the older generation who have love them so much and the lyrics of them because they tell a story and everyone past and present still loves a good story as well as a good singer and those of us who are older and grew up listening to those songs with their parents or grandparents can appreciate the younger generation who enjoy them as well. It's a part of our culture and Heritage that everyone I believe could and should pass on and it also reminds those of us who are older have a time when things were much simpler and happier in our lives. The memories not only that but it helps us to connect with the younger generation in a way that we've never been able to before or an away with this generation is unable to connect with the older generation so many other ways when mainstream media and social media tries to create a divided and divisions between family friends xcetera

I'm 54 and this is one of my favorites. Johnny played his final show at the Skyline Club in Austin, TX on November 5, 1960. He was killed in a head on car crash shortly after the show. My grandparents lived right around the corner from the Skyline Club and my dad would talk about the crash almost every time we went to visit.
