A lot of people hate this version, but I love it. I think Johnny is the perfect actor to play Wonka. I also like how this film went into his backstory. The Burton aesthetic also does this film a lot of favors.

“But that is called cannibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.” is my favorite quote in this movie. It makes it sound like Wonka doesn’t really mind if he gets eaten or not, he just wants the kids to know that their reputation will go down a bit if they do so.

I grew up with this version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and the book, and I absolutely love it - It's just the right kind of weird with sinister undertones to fit the feeling of the book

So Johnny Depp did in fact run into the glass elevator by accident. The actors of Joe and Charlie were confused and didn't know what to do. The second time he did it was on purpose so we wouldn't suspect it was an accident after all.

I’ve seen someone mention Johnny’s incredible control of his facial muscles when he’s acting and I can’t unsee it now.

When you said Charlie has great parents because they didn't tell him about their financial problems and dad losing his job because they didn't want this to burden him or put him under pressure i related to that so much...because my family were the opposite specially my mom...because she didn't have anybody to talk to she would always talk to me about not only financial problems but relationship problems with my dad as well without knowing how much it hurts or damage me...it all ended up with me having to grow up so fast and being the parent to my mom at a realy young age 9 or 10 maybe...just wanted to share this maybe it helps someone having a similar issue knowing that their not alone...sending love...💖💖💖

In case you’re wondering, this version is MUCH more book accurate. The story of Prince Pondicherry was also in the book, and I think the oompa loompa songs have the lyrics directly ripped from the book. Also, in the original story, Charlie doesn’t find the ticket in the one he opens on his birthday or the one that grandpa joe buys for him. He finds a random and lucky dollar stuck in the snow and uses it to buy one on a whim, and that one is one that has the ticket

I love this film. He was very loyal to the source material and any add ons that he made he got permission from the author’s family. His wife who watched this film stated that he would have love this. The songs in this film they took the lyrics straight from the book

People love to hate on this version of Dahl's story, but it is, for one, a much more faithful adaptation. Most of the dialogue is taken almost verbatim from the book. Also I feel like Roald Dahl and Tim Burton have a very similar approach to depicting fantasy, with the way they both like to juggle the dark and macabre with bizarre and heartfelt. "The Witches" - another near-perfect adaptation of Dahl - is a borderline horror movie, and, no wonder, it's an on honorary 80s film (it came out in 1990). You may want to check it out if you haven't already.

The only changes from the book (that I can remember since it's been over twenty years since I read it) were adding the Willy Wonka's father subplot, the Wonka's Welcome song, and omitting the song in the tunnel (that was the only song that they added in the original movie that was in the book). They modernized details like adding the competitive aspect to Violet and the computers/technology to Mike because the book was released in 1964, after all. The book is fairly short, so you needed to add details to pad the running time.

Fact: among other things, there is a very dark Easter egg in this movie. Charlie's dad used to work at a toothpaste factory, and the toothpaste itself was called Smilex. A pretty ordinary name for such a product - if you don't know that it is the name of deadly gas used by the Joker...

I kinda felt Violet got it off pretty good as well, yes she’s now literally violet, but considering she wants to compete in martial arts, her incredible stretchiness has got to be a benefit for her.
