There is a legendary story that when John Peel heard The Undertones-Teenage Kicks he started weeping because it was so perfect. Now me being me, I thought, "Oh bullshit. It's a good song, but NO song is THAT good, and I've heard a LOT of songs." And then I heard this song. I'm not exaggerating that the first time I heard this song it made me cry because it's so f*king perfect. It's one of the single best pop songs I've ever heard. Now I get it...

@Emily Finan The biggest thing I know is that he called the chinese a sub-species due to their treatment of animals, which, combined with their treatment of human beings, I am not really inclined to deny, the other and only other comment that could be construed as controversial is that people prefer their own kind, which is statistically true, most people do if you check the studies. Apart from those two comments Morrissey has always been pretty damn left wing with The Smiths being called one of the most anti-capitalist bands out there. He literally said he would've pressed a button to kill Trump, he would've done the same for Thatcher considering the comments he's made. All the while though, I find all of this completely baffling considering how Morrissey looks like a Communist in comparison to Ian Curtis and his political views, but of course, Ian Curtis is dead so he's kept as an idealised soul and we have to throw all our virtue signalling vitriol at a 60 year old man. Nice one.

I won't go that far, but it is excellent. Dynamo, 25 Hours (awesome drumming), and This Tension are terrific. Every other track is very good to excellent with the exception of Playland and Speak Out where nothing much happens in either track and which sound too much alike to be placed next to each other -- it hurts the album's momentum -- but they are "good" songs too. No clunkers here. Big improvement lyrically and vocally over The Messenger (which I also thought was very good). I still think The The - Dusk, Electronic's self titled album and singles recorded around that time, and Modest Mouse - We Were Dead, may still edge this out, but with a few more listens I may change my mind.

Cool song.... very catchy... kind of stays in your head....obviously Johnny wanted something radio friendly.... the idea is still is to get the music played even on the radio. Marr is soo good , a true genius.... he can play any style of music anytime he wants. "Candidate" is another track off of Playland..... it's totally different from this song. It's soo cool to see that when most artists his age are totally smoked, Johnny's only starting to push the pedal down. That's the difference between him and Moz. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

is it me or did he improve A LOT as a vocalist? good song, hope it'll grow on me more!
@deathfromabove7710 жыл бұрын
I thought his vocals on "The Messenger" were great and he's gotten better i'm sure with all the touring he's done the last year or so. Anyway , as long as he sings the songs HE wrote who cares if he wasn't the greatest vocalist anyway? Some people watch too much fucking American Idol / X Factor and I think everyone should sound like a cabaret singer. Neither Bob Dylan, Joe Strummer, Mick Jagger, Ian Curtis, Ian Brown, Neil Young, John Lydon for example, have pretty voices. But no one could sing their songs like they could
@PCDisciple10 жыл бұрын
deathfromabove77 To me there are some discrepancies in your list. I don't think Dylan's voice adds anything to the song (to say the least...) where as Johnny Rotten DOES add to their songs a lot with this style. I get your point, but there is an objective standard in some sense. Johnny sounds great though no joke
@deathfromabove7710 жыл бұрын
***** No "discrepancies" in my list at all. Never said anything about Dylan's voice "adding" anything to the song. "Like a Rolling Stone" for example, simply is HIS song and regardless of whether his voice is "flat" or off key as people who just don't get it like to say , means nothing to me...it's the authentic voice of the writer, the story teller if you will. That song sung by a so called "better " singer, trained vocalist totally misses the point. Same goes for all the others on my list.
@PCDisciple10 жыл бұрын
deathfromabove77 I agree completely, but I was approaching it from a different perspective from you. The authenticity is awesome I'd never deny that. But Johnny Rotten's voice adds the attitude that can VERY rarely be replicated, where as I think some of Dylan's songs actually sound better sung by someone else.
@deathfromabove7710 жыл бұрын
***** agree with you on Rotten's voice which although much maligned at the time,has become iconic and even influenced other rock vocalists ( Liam Gallagher, Richard Butler, even Alex Turner , sort of). Although Rotten's a complete one off, original. And , yes there are some great Dylan covers ( The Band, The Byrds,Hendrix and countless others )..but his original recordings are enough for me. I couldn't listen to the "Blonde on Blonde" album covered by anyone else...anyway , after all that, I think Johnny Marr's actually a decent singer.( you know, nice sounding , tuneful , "inoffensive" in the modern rock style,even)..plus like I said, HE WROTE the damn songs.
@samsungview26182 жыл бұрын
