Johnny singing 'Misty' with this arrangement behind him is, in my mind, the finest example of what music is all about and what it is meant to be, to touch our spirit and awaken thoughts of love which we, way too often, tuck away in our hearts away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We tear up and in many cases cry uncontrollably when we hear Johnny sing it and if we listen to it a thousand times, the feelings we get will never ebb. "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree." After that opening line a listener hearing it for the first time gets 'locked in' and can't wait for more!
@dean343411 ай бұрын
Yes indeed with all of the arrangement behind him he was fun to listen to. However he could have easily jazz-ed it up a bit more to further engage a broader interest. I saw Johnny Mathis live in Seattle many years ago and he did some of his hits and he did put some serious R&B into those songs and it was fabulous.
@JohnBernardon-py7wf11 ай бұрын
I just read about how he created that famous fade in effect where his voice seems to come right out of the orchestra. It was as if the orchestra became is voice. Amazing. He did it by walking closer and closer to the microphone as he saying that note.
@dean343411 ай бұрын
Those strings sure did the job back in that day. However, his phrasing and such could have touched more with the more powerful male sound that he always had and he could do it. But he was 'different' and successful with this voice and sound so producers with the money said keep it going because he does the full spectrum of sound and he could compete with the string section.
@RobertDeMartin11 ай бұрын
Yes, when everyone heard that for the first time the reaction was always, "Did you hear that! Was that his voice?" It's funny, but when I turned on the video to see your comment I couldn't resist singing the song with Johnny before I did. It's one of the few songs I know EVERY SINGLE WORD and when I come to the part you were talking about I have a little difficulty 🙂to say the least! There are so many songs and artists we have become fond of over the years but this particular song sung by Johnny Mathis with fabulous orchestration behind him is, to me, the musical moment in my life I am most endeared with. I immediately think of a woman I was infatuated with at the time this song came out and you can guess the impression this song had on me. @@JohnBernardon-py7wf
@RobertDeMartin11 ай бұрын
My latest comment came in 8 minutes after yours. Yes, the orchestration was fantastic. Whatever someone's vision was of 'what could be' suddenly disappeared after hearing this version for the first time. It is a classic that will stand the test of time. @@dean3434

Its not often a voice can make the hairs on your arms stand up !! We had a tenor named Musa Nkuna sing at my daughters wedding back in the nineties. He sang Love changes Everything and the entire wedding audience burst into uncontrolled clapping when he finished. It was one of those same velvet moments.

I love modern music, yet these versions are evergreen, my dad used to play this with its lovely jazz chords, he is no more and reminds me of him above all my wife who died at the age of 36 was misty. This song triggers slightly sad and sweet nostalgia.

CLASSIC! The music of yesteryear will never be forgotten, unlike the music today can't even understand anything.

This song reminds me of the 90's in Satellite Town Lagos Nigeria. We had a land phone my dad locked in a wooden box, could only dial within Nigeria unless he inputted the codes to dial overseas, I always picked a collect call from my aunt in Parsippany, NJ, got into fights in High School, returned back home after a long trek in the sun with my buddy Nnamdi who's now married in the UK......I can go on and on.....This song gets me "Misty" eyed!
