Bless family !! Please enjoy reasoning with reggae legend Johnny Osbourne giving a lesson about an integral part of the dancehall culture 'dubplates'.
Johnny Osbourne is one of the most popular Jamaican reggae and dancehall singers of all time, who rose to success in the late 1970's and mid-1980's. He is responsible for one of the greatest albums of all-time 'Truth and Rights' and countless anthems like Jah Promise, Buddy Bye, Reasons, No Ice Cream Sound, Chopper, In Your Eyes, and many more...

I keep telling people, 1979 is when Dancehall really began. Stereophonic changed the way how sound systems played forever, 1979 was their watershed year. They were the first sound to have singers on their set. 1979 was also the year when Henry "Junjo" Lawes first buss on the scene, producing tunes for Barrington Levy and Johnny Osbourne, further enhancing the dancehall experience. The one sound that challenged Stereophonic for dancehall dominance in those early days was King Stur Gav. The clashes between those two are legendary.

As I understand Johnny Osbourne is here refering to Dubplates with Name-Callings for Soundsystems. The idea of Dubplates (meaning exclusive songs) is much older than that. Basicially it started even before Ska, when the Coxsone, Duke Reid and other Soundsystem-Owner, where travelin' to the US mainly to get rare RnB Records, scratch the labels off so nobody can find out the titles of the song. Later they started recording their own songs - not to sell them to the crowds - but to have exclusive songs for the soundsystem-nights. So the "Dubplate" - Culture is acutally older than Ska and even started 20 years before "name droppin' Dubplates in the late 70ties. Thx for I Never Knew TV for the great content.

When I was growing up, I always learnt that the instrumental side two of a record, was called the 'dub' side, and short music to promote sounds, as Mr. Osbourne said. But, now I am hearing it as commercials to promote political candidates. I guess that is a form of evolution.
