The tunes are: "The Laird of Drumblair" - strathspey, with a reel version played by Johnny "Jean's Reel" - Phil's solo "The Musical Priest" - final reel played by both. Thanks to UISTMAN for the info and the original video

2 of the nicest and most talented guys known to music in modern times. Spare a thought for Mother Cunningham having to watch her 2 boys have heart attacks at such young ages, and to suffer the devastating loss of her eldest son Johnny at the young age of just 46. Phil may you live 2 lifetimes and keep us all entertained when we've all gone onto Gods' green pastures!

OMG Was that in this world? Thanks for posting this. I actually got to hear them do this LIVE, (unplanned), in Pittsburgh and it was positively orgasmic.

The tunes are: "The Laird of Drumblair" - strathspey, with a reel version played by Johnny "Jean's Reel" - Phil's solo "The Musical Priest" - final reel played by both. as noted by SwinginDrumMeister. (From my posting of this set 04 Aug 2007.)

I competed upper grade pipe solos. I wired up a boom box in this time period and played PC solos to students at greatly slowed speed to use for instructional purposes in piping. His better recordings were incredibly accurate and consistent in melody timing, and rich in articulation. Some of the live performances weren't as good, but his best work stands up to slow speed examination, to my somewhat informed ear.

I still don’t understand how Johnny plays those notes so fast at 1:13 etc - he sometimes seems to be doing quite long bows on them.

We enjoyed their visit on this same tour at a table 10 feet away. Utterly inspirational. Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if the Silly Wizard "Live in America" record is ever going to become available in download format, last time I checked I didn't see it on iTunes. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I think I got the video from your posting. I wanted to embed it in my website but I think your upload didn't allow that. I wouldn't have uploaded if it could. Thanks for posting it originally and I hope you don't mind.

Crazy accordion ornamentation! Sometimes overdoing it, but VERY impressive! Perhaps one day I will be that good... :)

I wonder if the reels were really played at this speed, or is somebody having a joke on us?

balkanhills They were played at this speed, hard to believe I know.

I have seen Phil do it live twice. It happened
@salal20077 жыл бұрын
yes, balkanhills,Phil Cunningham played at this speed - i was so lucky to sit next to him!! when he was jamming with other fantastic Celtic musicians and others, after a Vancouver Folk Festival in the 1980s. This piece stuck to my spirit ever since, the vibration of the accordion was amazing....

Fans of Irish music, they'll complain and moan when you bring up piano accordions in irish music... show them some Phil Cunningham though, and they shut their mouths!

WHY???
@Melvorgazh2 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t they play faster? A bit boring. 😛
@Guiness198813 жыл бұрын
I simply don't get why PC is always considered as being an outstanding acc. player -.- there are many more who just were not as lucky as him... just listen; where's the articulation? Speed is not everything
