Too much junkie business...maybe...but nonetheless an incredible performer and musician, and one of my most adored artists. Died before he got old and irrelevant...didn't pander or make apologies. Just so badass. I mean, shitniggadamn, Johnny Thunders played the guitar like he invented it. Johnny had real rock and roll in his DNA...Nothing wrong with doing heroin for a bit..I did it in the 80s a bit...But after awhile..You're fucked..He should have quit it by the early 80s...It was long enough by then..He would have kicked ass for decades and decades after that...But doing it as long as he did was bound to screw him up..Especially as a working musician...Actually I shouldn't have said that..It's NOT cool to do that stuff...When you do heroin the problem is....When the Kicks are gone and you're ready to move on..(Ya know like the 'been there done that' routine)...It's too late...You're hooked..The kicks are gone real quick, within months...After that...Your're just trying not to be sick every day...How can you properly rock and roll in that condition?...Or really do any kind of job?..Rock and Roll is still kind of a job, I guess..lol...God bless you Johnny..RIP.....frankm64yroldwhitekid rockfan

You can call it cool if you want, and I loved the dolls, but I haven't seen one performance without him being off his nut and it really does his performance no good. Jimi played high a lot of the time but he could still play. His performances are so messy that they all just fall to pieces in to a big mess. I think people are just blinded by the fact he is Thunders. Blinded fandom. Emperors new clothes syndrome. Musically (I'm sorry and I know i'm going to get shit from those ' he is a genius people) it is fucking awful. A total mess. The musicians playing with him always get fucked off and often the audience even have enough. All he did was full distortion lead break after lead break amongst out of tune lyrics ( which he often fucked up) even in the 'punk ethic' it is just a fucking mess. Rock and roll is one thing, and he was definitely a character ( and id prefer him to saccharine soulless rock) But just a few songs not completely fucked up, in-tune without being cut short or dragged out for 20 minutes would have been nice - but he couldn't seem to do it. Just distorted hammer-on's, bends and those exaggerated 'punk' moves..and I guess he looked pretty cool (at times)

Johnny Thunders' eyeballs are rolling behind the sockets here, the man is so loaded he's on the verge of an OD. A manager wouldn't have let him go on because he's in real state: his guitar gets out of tune and he's too stoned to tune it, the strap keeps coming off, he misses bits of songs, etc.. his whole performance looks chaotic and unpredictable 'cause he's so out of it. Probably Walter Lure and the rest of the band were used to it, and if he wouldn't have gone on and moved around then he would have fallen asleep, risking to go under and a have a fatal OD for real. But he could do the songs even in such a state 'cause he was really good, he could play some of the best Rock'n'Roll ever with his eyes shut and standing upside down. Thanks for posting this

I saw Johnny Thunders a few times. You could always tell when he was and when he wasn't on junk by his body language. When he was clean he was very animated and exuded a whole lot of nervous energy. His voice was clearer too. In this era he was pretty much always strung out but there were some shows in the mid-eighties he played clean and they were always fantastic. We went for the spectacle but every once in a while saw what Johnny could have been without the drugs.
