Johnny Unitas Highlights - The Greatest

Johnny Unitas was at his best during the late-50s and early-60s, but he still had a little magic left in him during the beginning of the 1970s. These highlights feature his best plays from the 1969-72 season (he missed the majority of 1968 with an injury).
Video was found around KZbin, and the music was taken off Dave Volsky's channel.

There have have been great QBs since the Unitas era but he was the first to engineer the full-on aerial display. He was my inspiration as a kid in the 60s and I learned everything I could about the 50s as soon as I was old enough to read. And on a side note, those Colt uniforms, especially the all whites, remain the most beautiful the league has ever seen. Thank you for these wonderful highlights and thank you Mr. John Unitas.

Seasons were only 12-14 games all the years Unitas played. If he had played in 16 game seasons his records would never have been surpassed.

Johnny Unitas: The man who defined the modern quarterback. His surgical passes and trademark two-minute drills became the benchmark that all other quarterbacks became judged by. By this point in his career, Johnny U had sustained a serious injury and was obviously declining as a player. However, he still showed flashes of the quarterback he once was, especially during the Colts 1970 Super Bowl season. His ability to hit the open man after doing a spinning play-action fake on the goal line was uncanny. Oh, and if you take away anything else from this video, it should be that John Mackey was really freaking good. Honestly, the reason I picked these seasons was because most of Johnny Unitas' non-black and white highlights come from these seasons on episodes of This Week in Pro Football. Having some highlights in color and others not would have been jarring to me. And since it appears the United States is exiting its COVID-19 shutdown (for better or worse), this may be the last video you see from me in a month or two. Hopefully not though! - PockyCandy -

I always think of John Mackey's quote " being in huddle with Johnny was like being in the huddle with god." Wish i saw him play. Loved reading about him and seeing what his teammates and opponents said and they all admired him. That says alot. He would still be dominant now probably more so with all the rules for offenses. He revolutionized the passing game and quarterbacking. There are highlights you can find where he did no look pass and the switch to side arm passes.

I could not agree more about the Colts unforms of the Unitas era. Even on black and white TV, those unforms were the equivalent of the Yankee pinstripes (and I say that as a lifelong Orioles fans). They were regal. One day I hope we will see shoulder loops on contemporary uniforms like those of the Unitas era. Today's loops don't loop. They look like incomplete half-loops.

Frank Deford said it best. It doesn’t matter whether or not Johnny Unitas was the greatest, he is THE quarterback for all-time in the same way that Babe Ruth is THE baseball player for all-time. So much of what we see in today’s NFL, the two minute drill, the four minute offense, and simply controlling the game, can all be traced back to what Unitas was doing in the 50s and 60s.

No way to prove it but right now I put Unitas at the top of the list of QB's as to the ability to throw to a spot where a ball needs to be thrown. Meaning to get a pass completed he didn't have to depend on the receiver making a great catch as much as other QB's if that makes sense.

I was born in New York in 1951, so growing up my favorite sports "heroes" were Mantle, Mays, Bill Russell, and Unitas. Even after being in Massachusetts for the entire length of Tom Brady's career (and really liking and enjoying him as a QB) I don't think he's technically "better" than Unitas, although he's in the same ballpark. It's a different game, but that ability to see better than everyone else on the field, and get it to the right guy at the right time marks both their careers (as it does Montana and Peyton Manning - Eli only fits if you consider getting a ball stuck in David Tyree's helmet). The other part is the stories of him and Raymond Berry staying hours after practice working on routes - that desire is what marks the truly great ones. Maybe not the GOAT, but can't be left out of the conversation.

@@markharrison2830 well, It was VERY important to the NFL that the Jets win that 1969 Super Bowl and establish the AFL as the supposed ''equal'' of the NFL...we also need to remember that just 3 years after losing to Namath and the Jets, Don Shula's team AMAZINGLY had the ONLY "Perfect Season" in the entire history of the NFL andd topped it off with the 1973 Super Bowl win...!
