I agree it's not the same Skynyrd and never will be of course, but this song is sort of why it angers me a bit when I read people criticizing Johnny for carrying on with Skynyrd as I have No doubt Ronnie has a big smile on his face seeing his baby brother carrying on the legacy. I do not believe he is tarnishing the legacy a bit as those who knew Skynyrd growing up with them knows how great they were and they should understand it's a baby brother carrying on his big brothers legacy. I was a lucky SOB as I got to see the original Skynyrd 5 times before the crash as I was born and raised in the Pensacola area and they always came to both Pensacola and Mobile every year so we would go to both venues. There will never be another group like them for myself. It would have been 6 times but one of the years we were standing in line to go in, but a promoter or something came out and said the show was canceled as Gary had fell very ill.

I remember sitting on my front porch in october of 1977 & the DJ interupting the music and saying the Freebird had crashed & Ronnie,Steve, Cassie and Dean Kilpatrick had been killed. I was not quite 12 yet, and I sat and cried listening to them playing Free Bird in memory. A Skynyrd fan from about age 9, it was a hard loss. Ronnie Van Zant was a hero to me. I was lucky enough to see the first reunion tour in 87 and about 14 more shows after....Fly on Freebird...you're free at last & We Remember!

Lynyrd Skynyrd has always been one of my favorite bands and Ronnie one of my favorite singers. My ex was pregnant with my oldest daughter we were deciding names and was going to name her Samantha. I heard this song the first time and what a tribute to ronnie. That night my ex went into labor 23 hours later they had to do an emergency c-section my ex wanted to be put under for it when the Dr took my baby from her mommy's stomache and I heard that first cry and the Dr saying it's a girl My first thought was she is not a samantha but a melody her cry was music to my ears and my tribute to Ronnie Van Zant 2 months later Johnny played at the channel in Boston my brother and I went to see him when he played this song I handed him a picture of my precious little girl and on the back said to johnny love melody. After the show we were walking back to the car and came across the band stnding outside the tour bus one of the band members ask us about some weed so we were rolloing him a few joints and johnny came walking by and I told him about the picture he had us go onto the tour bus and took a book titled Lynyrd Skynrd I will never forget you it was written by Gene and Johnny had the band sign it then he signed it to Melody love Johnny. My daughter turned 29 september 36 and to this day still has this book. rest in peace Ronnie Van Zant

You got to know what brickyard road is to relate. Around that area along the St Johns river, from Greencove springs, down to Palatka, you have old road laid by bricks. Those were the first roads in that part of Florida. There was a brick making factory some place along there. You can still find old sections of those roads, but many are overgrown with trees and bushes. Down by the water is where you see most of them.

I still remember the plane crash. Lynyrd Skynyrd had just played a show near here in Greenville, S.C. The plane went down in the swamps of Mississippi. Steve and Cassie Gaines, siblings who were a guitarist and vocalist in the band, respectively, also died. It's been 37 years, and I still am traumatized by it. It was probably the worst thing that happened in my childhood other than Roberto Clemente dying in the crash of a plane headed to Nicaragua on New Year's Eve 1972. When I first heard this song on the radio, I obviously immediately identified with it. I really miss Ronnie Van Zant, because he was a special person and an incredible musician.

Brought me too tears. I lost my brother 22 yrs ago and it was just the two of us.I did him no justice tagging along with him and his friends. Although he was 3yrs older he was really cool with his little (fat) sister hanging out. Although this was my FIRST time hearing this song, it WON'T be the last. Like the video, I sometimes went to the old neighborhood just remembering. This is an extremely powerful loving song. Johnny did a wonderful job. I really boo-hooded when I saw VanZant incorporating Lacy in the video. To all who have siblings, call them. Tell them you love them, even the really obnoxious ones, they need it more. Once the eye's close, there close. 👋👋🕊️

I lived with, and lost, the love of my life on Brickyard Road, Hardeeville, South Carolina. He died tragically, and I grieve for him everyday - nine years later. Just like Johnny sings to his brother, hoping so much that Ronnie can hear him, I always hope my love is listening with me when I play this song. My free spirited Scotty is free from pain and the evil cruelty of this world. And, like Ronnie, he's free as a bird. He will live forever in my heart. Kristen

Reminds me of sitting around an old chassis in Relic's backyard with a fire going and sinking a few Southern Comforts, singing to all the music tunelessly as hell, but what the hell, we enjoyed ourselves !! Long live Lynard Skynard in our hearts ..

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I should know, I've heard a few... Johnny is one of the best sad song writers ever born... I love this song forever, it also remembers me of someone I've lost. It brings tears to my eyes, really. Beautiful piece of art. One of the best southern songs of all times, in my opinion.

Oh man, I have never once been able to listen to this song without it bringing me to tears, and this video hits me even harder! Rest in peace, Ronnie. As long as people love your music, your spirit will never truly be gone! Johnny, this is a wonderful way to pay homage to your family and their legacy. Ronnie couldn't have had a better tribute!

I love how Lacy Van Zant (Their father) is in the video. I had the great pleasure of visiting Ronnie's grave in Jacksonville in 2001. The inscription of Charlie Daniel's quote on the bench is heart wrenching. Fly high Free Bird. You are immortal in our hearts and your songs.

@@JRLegette I know this comment was 3 years ago, but. lol Dude...Orange Park is sooooooo freaking crowded now! I hate driving down Blanding when we come to visit. And Middleburg is no longer....I hate seeing it all built up. I loved when it was all country-like. I now live in Eustis on the country side on 4.25 acres; where animals are my neighbors...and I LOVE it!! Reminds me of how Middleburg used to be. Did you ever party at the Black Creek boating dock? I saw a kids park was put in the last time I was there...but when we partied there, it was nothing but darkness. We kids were always looking for dark, isolated hidey holes to party. lol

They're still active as Van Zant dude, I think its an honorable thing picking up the torch of Lynyrd Skynyrd and continuing Ronnies journey to bring that southern sound to the world. But you're entitled to you're own opinion man, as long as we love the music i don't think it matters.

I came up with an idea, but it would only work if Johnny would let it. And that's this. I'm sure by now, you probably came across some morons who post on L.S. threads on how they don't like Johnny either fronting the band or still going by the Skynyrd name. Myself, I don't care so much about the name so much, as I do the PEOPLE who make it up. The band no matter what name they go by, is still a well polished group of fellers N gals who perfected their craft. And I always go by the motto, if all people are gonna do is bitch about the band, simply don't listen. Problem solved. But getting back to what you said in your post. I kinda wish Johnny would front his Van Zant Band, even though I love the Skynyrd Band we have now, but why I wish he would front the Van Zant Band again is, that way, it would shut up the big mouths who keep bitching about em fronting Skynyrd. But back to my point & what you had posted, I wish Johnny would front the Van Zant Band again & stick to writing all new music N stuff, & maybe mix in 1 or 2 of his brothers songs from time to time in concert, but close out all his shows with Brickyard Road. As one who has been to a ton of Skynyrd's shows, its no secret they close em out with Sweet Home Alabama & then Freebird. So why not have Johnny go back to fronting Van Zant with all NEW music, so those with big mouths who have nothing better to do but bitch all the time, can shut up, & maybe have Johnny close out each show with Sweet Home Alabama & then Brickyard Road? Brickyard Road much like Freebird is a tribute to Ronnie anyway, so about the only thing those doing all the bitching about can really bitch about is, Johnny singing Sweet Home Alabama which is just ONE SONG of his late brother. Now if those doing the bitching are still gonna bitch about that, they had better get a life, cos lets say Johnny does a 23 song set & 21 of those songs are the Van Zant Band songs. Then he comes back out for the curtain call & ends each show with Sweet Home Alabama & then Brickyard Road. You mean to tell me, people are gonna bitch on these youtube threads cos he sang ONE song of his brothers out of a 23 song set? They need to get a life. Like I said, it was just an idea I had, should Johnny ever decide to go that route. As for Johnny, the guy much like Donnie & Ronnie, is gifted. I have all of Skynyrd's music, & also Van Zant's too. And there's allot of great songs on those Van Zant ones. There's no doubt in my mind, that Johnny would do just fine, with or without being under the Skynyrd name. The guy HAS IT!!! Just wish he would learn to break out on his own & use it more. Till then, guess time will tell. And lastly to ALL the Skynyrd fans out there, lets ALL say a prayer tonight, cos Gary Rossington had some chest pain again, & the band had to cancel some shows till he gets cleared by his doctors. Get well soon Gary, cos we don't need anymore loss's with the BEST BAND IN THE LAND!!!!
