This is a prime example of an effective interviewer. Johnny Carson was quite the opposite of today's self aggrandizing hosts, who ramrod their own opinions, rather than let their guests flesh out their views. Johnny listens quietly, asks pertinent questions and then shuts up.

Exactly! At that time no one thought the way this woman did. Johnny didn't try to change her mind. He allowed her to give her opinion, and the audience was allowed to decide. Now we have main stream news saying they will no longer let the "other side" give their opinion, because "they" don't agree with it.

One young woman in the audience of the Austin debate got it right when she said had Madalyn expressed those views “…in another day, she would have been put on a scaffold…” And that intolerance and retribution for any inkling of free thought has been, and still is, the way of religion and the hypocritical devout. The modern scaffold was tarring her with the brush of ‘the most hated women in America’ in order to demonise, invalidate and silence her. I am glad they did not succeed and her voice, her insights, her wisdom can still be heard today.

I watched a video of Madelyn making the statement " public schools won't bring prayer back in the classroom" In my town, the school administration have given school authorities the option of letting the faculty start classes with prayer or letting the students volunteer to do it from the office over the intercom. The students said yes they wanted to do it. That sounds like to me prayer is either coming back into the classroom or it stayed in the school but was dormant until now which is 2022. Johnny Carson was amazing. What’s portrayed in this video is something that’s largely lost on today’s society. Sitting down and having a civil conversation with someone you may not agree with is almost a thing of the past. I have never seen this country as divided as it is now and debates almost inevitably turn into shouting matches with insults and name calling. It’s even evident in these comments. I am a Christian. I thought very badly of this woman while I was growing up. Of course she was presented to people like me as the devil incarnate. She actually was not only very articulate but makes a lot of her points most convincingly. She is so right to call most of the religious community "Hippocrates" and they have made her point for her in the sex scandals covered up by the various churches for so many decades. I feel very differently now, as an older adult, about people like her than I did while I was so impressionable and naive growing up. I'm still not at the point where I consider myself an atheist, but I certainly have tolerance and understanding I never had before about those who do call themselves atheists. And they're not the devil!
@TheMidnightModder2 жыл бұрын
As a young, devout Christian I agree with you. I agree that she is surprisingly well spoken and that of course, she herself is not the devil, and even that many of my own who claim to be Christians are very hypocritical. I'm hypocritical sometimes and hypocrisy is definitely a sin. But it's very unwise to throw the baby out with the bathwater, e.g. throw God away because of the sinful humans who represent Him. But to this I say, Allow God to represent Himself through His word, the Bible! Not through sinful humans! God has made His morality very clear to the entire world through the Bible and throwing Him away simply because Christians, like every other human in the world, are sometimes hypocrites is extremely ignorant and frankly idiotic. I'll also add that our sin is the reason we need a savior in the first place! And when I come across anyone who claims to be "good enough" to be right with God I see little more than arrogance and pride. And that's what I see in Mrs. O'Hair. While she may not believe in Heaven or Hell, by denying God she is through her actions telling the world that "I'm good enough and I don't need God." No matter how wise she is the ways of this world she is spiritually nothing more than a fool. I genuinely hope that she believed in the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and repented before her death but probably not. The only shining light is that Now she knows the truth. But it's too late now and her sin has eternal consequences.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son, and another person who worked for her organization, came to a very bad end. You can Google her name, and get all the details. They weren't kidnapped by religious fanatics who resented her Supreme Court decision, but by someone who had been in her organization. But she really accomplished alot with the decision. Imagine you were a Jewish child growing up in a small Bible belt town, pre Supreme Court decision, in attendance at a public school. You'd be substantially ostracized by other students, as well as by the teacher, when she led the class with a Christian prayer at the start of the school day. This decision helped put an end to that. At the time of the decision, President Kennedy remarked that he hoped the decision would encourage more Americans to pray in their homes. How refreshing that a President would stay out of people's personal lives, and their religious choices.

I am all for freedom. Free to believe or not. I understand atheists don't want the church to tell them what to do or think. The separation of church and state means our government is not the church authority. As far as religious community goes ...anyone who joins or belongs to a given religion chooses or grows up with that faith should follow their leaders and community as they can. In this country anyone can choose to stay or leave their faith community. What I have trouble with is the hate on every side for each other. Our laws provide for freedom as long as one does not infringe on another's rights. Having said that much has changed in this country in over 200 years. I also believe schools nor any other entity should force the participation or require the individual to profess what they do not believe or otherwise indoctrinate the individual. And that said on the other hand there is no respect anymore for people with differing views.

A "discussion" between a believer and a non-believer usually takes place on an uneven playing field. As a non-believer (even as a child it never made any sense to me) I have no problem with people who believe (as long as they don't impose upon me). I don't call them names, don't claim that they can not possibly be good and moral people, and don't tell them that they will suffer for eternity for their beliefs. On the other hand, many - not all - believers tell me (and we all know this conversation), that I'll be damned for eternity, that I'm immoral, and, as someone in this thread, that I'm stupid for not believing. I remember as a child, trying to understand the adult world, and seeing all kinds of religions around me (I grew up in a neighborhood with fellow Jews, Catholics, and some others), around the world, and throughout history. I wanted to understand the logic of it. I saw three possibilities. One, that of all the religions I happened to luck out in being born into the "correct" one. That seemed unlikely, as everyone else thought the same thing. Two, all are correct. That's impssible, in that they all contradict each other, in many fundamental ways. Three: all are wrong. THAT seemed to be the only logical answer.
@mystarmach3 жыл бұрын
It was refreshing to see this conversation between Johnny and Madalyn. I just wanted to touch on something you said - it could be that all the religions are 'correct', but in a general sense, not specifics. I used to be an devout believer, then an adamant non-believer, and now I'm somewhere in the middle. I now think there's some central phenomenon that all these human-made systems have gradually formed around, whether that phenomenon is supernatural or not is another question - I think it might be psychological or 'psychocultural'. But there's definitely something powerful and structural and ancient and emotional at the centre of all the world's big religions. If you strip away all the 'noise' of what they say and outlaw and allow and mandate, there is that thread running through them all. Just my 2 cents. What do you think?

@jasmineklos5178, her eldest son had a severe substance abuse problem and, like many who try to get clean, found the crutch of religion to replace the crutch of drugs. They perform kind and moral acts without fear of spiritual retribution, nor with the promise of the favor of heaven. Doing the right thing because it is right in the moment. @@user-bj2lu9qt3o I was a bit surprised by her appearance. She was in a frumpy "summer" dress that made her appear like a neighbor of Ma and Pa Kettle. She was polite enough and knew the issues. I think she probably was tired of talking with young radio reporters who didn't know a lot about her beyond what they had read in the media or, in my case, heard from my minister, who described her as "Satan on two legs roaming the Earth." At the time, I asked her what she thought about movies such as "Heaven Can Wait," which was a popular Warren Beatty movie at the time. She said she wouldn't see it because it perpetuates the idea of religious fantasy. I thought that was a bit extreme (I've seen that movie a few times and love it, even though I'm an atheist). So I had mixed feelings about her, but look at this 1972 interview. We were not accustomed to having such strong-minded women on national talk show. She was highly intelligent. There is however millions of reports of people who had near death experiences and have proven there is a Devil & hell. See how silly that sounds.

Not really. Narcissists and sociopaths are at least 10% of the population so they are everywhere and hide in plain sight. These people are usually charismatic and are all con artist. She found a great con in getting rid of prayer in public school and made a lot of money from it. So she did a good thing for her own interests. She could also be very unpleasant.

Just saw the biopic about Madalyn. Sure, she was spoiled by the money and she became greedy, but beside that fact: that woman was brilliant, very intelligent and had balls. She stood for the right things and to see someone like that end up murdered and witnessing her granddaughter and her son being murdered as well, this is just something no one should experience. Was really sad to learn how it all ended...and the murder had nothing to do with her beliefs and activity as an atheist, she was murdered for money and for a crime plan gone wrong ... so stupid, so unnecessary.

Dying is typically not a good thing for anyone. Doesn't matter your belief system as long as you're comfortable with it. Someone reaching the end of their life who accepts it and isn't in pain is about as ideal as it gets.

Her son became a devout follower because he was victimized beaten and abused by Catholics too the point where he broke and began too sympathize with his victimizers. He also was paid a lot of money by evangelical preachers too travel around America and talk to these congregations about how supposedly dangerous atheism is. So he was both psychologically damaged by those Christ followers and he had a money based insensitive too become a Christian.

@@Anne--Marie the greatest indoctrinator historically is and always has been religion. The irony is that all religious people fail to recognise that the only reason they are christian or Jewish or Hindu etc is by accident of birth and the fickle determination of any particular past authoritarian ruler who imposed it upon the population under their domination. Weak people fall in line under threat and punishment. The modern version of that being hostility, ridicule, judgement, exclusion, shaming.
