Hey Johnny, it’s Ted again, my wife loves these mats, since I can’t feel anything in my hands, I found a solution to keep the paracord or rope in place. I bought 4 12x12x1” cork titles, then I cut a piece of plywood 24x24” and used double sided tape to mount the cork to the plywood. When I start a mat or Celtic cross I use sewing pins to hold the paracord or rope in place as I create the shape needed. Once a have doubled the pattern I pull the pins.

Not only does knotting make you think about the tucks turns and structures, it also make you think about ways of making things easier for you. Thanks for taking the time to share this information, I always love to hear about knots and cordage being used in action!

Thanks again Johnny Debt. You explain every movement in such detail. Finding cordage at a reasonable price is tricky. I tie mainly nets just to give away for the practice. But the ocean plait mat will give it a try also....

My best source of rope is eBay. A little while ago I got a whole drum of rope for £1!! I often do a search for old rope and every now and again a little gem rears it's head. Sometime fishing vessels sell their old rope off cheap. If I make a rope mat, whenever I can I add a label to say where the rope came from.

I am very much a beginner in the art but an avid student! You might have seen a post or two on the Facebook groups- Traditional Ropework and Nautical Fancywork. I just posted my first knot board there. In fact your easy to follow instruction for the Ocean Plait became the centerpiece for my piece. Thanks for the great videos!

Ah yes, was that the one with the plain background that others suggested should be darker? I personally have never made a knot board!!! What is personally holding me back is that I want to know how to make top notch labels for each knot? I have to say I did enjoy seeing your knot board!
@michaelm8007
@michaelm8007 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was the board. I know what you mean about labels. I considered adding them but couldn't decide how to do it. If you have decent handwriting (which I do NOT) you could hand write the names of the knots and possibly age the strip of paper for an antiqued look. Or if you have an old typewriter sitting around you could type it out for an interesting effect. You should do a knot board video one day!

@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 26 күн бұрын
OK, many people like to side splice the ends on the underside of the mat. However, my personal preference is to Seize the end of the rope to the previous pass. Very often I will use green and red for port and starboard. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZzGh36AhJ2GeJosi=Zhv4pBDv93YRUzon

An excellent book that is really worth getting is a book by Des Pawson: igkt-solent.co.uk/des-pawsons-knot-craft-book-review/ It also tells you size and length of cordage to use.

I just finished one of these I had started a while back and then put off. I made it out of an old halyard that was completely worn out, but after washing it looks pretty nice. I'll post a pic when I can... I don't have internet home at the moment because we were just hit by a hurricane. It's interesting the difference in technique but the result is the same, I got mine from the marlinspike seamanship book. I sewed some of the lines together on the bottom to finish it off but I like the suggestion about just whipping the ends, I may have done more work that I needed to. Thanks for another great video! BTW that large one must be massive, how thick is that rope? It seems to be more than an inch.

This is one of those mats that you can be really proud of, also I am sure that it gets a lot of admirers. I have found with knotting, that no matter what you do, just around the corner there is another technique. Would love to see some of your work when you can. I guess that you now have a lot of clearing up to do after the Big Storm?

I make coasters like this out of 1/4 inch twine. For anyone you wants to try these I suggest getting some corkboard and 1 inch brads. Makes it a lot easier to tack the outer edges so you aren't constantly readjusting like you see in this video.

I'm sorry to say that I don't. I made a bunch of them as gifts and gave them away. My furniture is crappy so I don't need no stinking coasters! I have moved on to strictly paracord stuff, though nothing dazzling yet. Just bracelets, keyrings, and zipper pulls mostly.

Cool video quick question where do you get hold of your old rope
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 3 жыл бұрын
eBay is a good starting place, also sometimes a car boot sale (yard sales) is also good for pickings. If you live near a docks, then maybe ask if any vessel is getting rid of stuff. Some of the old rope on eBay is very expensive, but every now and then a little gem appears. 😉 😉 😉

I tried it with about 3/8" line and it made a mat roughly 6" X 8". Smaller than I hoped! I guess 3/4" line might be better for a real door mat. The smaller size might make good ladder tread non skid mats.

@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 3 жыл бұрын
OK, for the Ocean Plait mat that measures about 40" long x 18" wide and with 4 passes, you will need 96 feet of 1" rope. Once you have made that, you may want to look at making the Kringle Mat, you will need 122 feet of 3/8" rope with 5 passes. As you can see, they are cord hungry. Here is the video on Kringle Mat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKqUdXWJod2tjKs

@@KnottingKnots That's a great idea. It's a good way to utilise old rope that would otherwise end up in a landfill, or worse, in the ocean. There's a few folks here in Newfoundland who have tidy little businesses selling mats, here is a link to one of them: facebook.com/wasteknotwantknot/
