My grandfather served on a submarine during WWII, the USS Gurnard, and told us about getting depth charged, having the diving planes get stuck and nearly surfacing during battle, sneaking into Tokyo Bay behind enemy ships, etc... It's no wonder the death rate was 20%, and after hearing the stories I'm surprised it wasn't even higher.
@bojanivanisevic1072 Жыл бұрын
That's a high casualty rate and it must be a terrible way to die, german submarine crews had an even worse casualty rate of 75%, it was the most dangerous job in all of their armed forces. A great example of why you shut down the diesels was the Chinese Submarine No.361 which had its entire crew killed when a malfunction prevented the engine from shutting off. It literally used up all the oxygen in a matter of seconds. The submarine drifted for days before being recovered. The crew was all found dead at their stations, it happened that fast.

Fastest divers were German type VII and British U-class, about 30 seconds to get under. Larger boats (type XI, Gato, S-Class, I-Class) took about a minute. On a U-boat, the FIRST man down the ladder tripped the alarm (on Allied boats it was generally the last man down). One problem with diving at full rotations, it made it fairly easy for a "Fido" torpedo to hear the sub (and thus track on it), one reason for all the secrecy about the weapon (which was quite successful).

In the early part of the war German U-Boats took about two minutes to dive as pre war doctrine led them to believe they did not think the would be operating under threat of air attack. So when the British started using aircraft capable of catching them on the surface in the Bay of Biscay or the Atlantic this led to the loss and damage of a number of U-Boats.

The thing about WWI & WWII subs was that they were more like submersible or semi-submersible ships more than what we'd now consider a proper submarine. They generally travelled faster on the surface because their hull design was more like that of a surface ship than something meant to travel underwater. Eventually the albacore hull shape led to greatly improved underwater handling and improvements in diesel/electric theology along with nuclear power mean that subs could now spend more time underwater with nuclear powered subs spending most of their time underwater surfacing only to enter and leave port.

In WWII the Germans designed a prototype helicopter/drone for u-boats. They would tie a guy on a rope to the hull, strap him to a rudimentary helicopter/kite, and send him up in the air. This greatly improved the sight range of the boat, but the kite man was SOL if the boat came under aerial attack and had to dive

I finally learned the meaning of the "pressure hull", which is the part of the sub that is subject to the water pressure. The ballast tanks in WW2 subs surround the pressure hull and are open at the bottom so they don't feel any pressure. The David Duchovny movie "Phantom" (2013) was filmed inside a real sub. The use of newer LED lighting inside the sub made that possible.

I was always struck by the differences in crush depth between US and German submarines. German boats often refer to 600'-700', while US accounts usually cite 300' as the safe dive depth. Propaganda? Wartime secrecy? Facts? I have no idea.
@bongodrumzz Жыл бұрын
German U-boats actually show that as 60-70 metres, not feet. So in comparison there's not much difference and therefore not much propaganda. U-boats were not designed initially for ocean going deployments, trolling round the North Sea and the Baltic were the original design criteria, later when type VII boats came online the depths were increased but still with a healthy safety margin. Meanwhile US boats were using Royal Navy tech to increase their operating depths and ranges, not forgetting the shnorkel, a german idea that came along very late in the war for use on U-boats.
@mbryson2899 Жыл бұрын
@@bongodrumzz 60-70 meters??!! Not in the films I've seen or books I've read. For example, in "Das Boot" (the movie) 165 meters is the maximum safe depth displayed, 260 meters is the end of the line on the gauge.
@davydatwood3158 Жыл бұрын
@@mbryson2899 For a lot of equipment, the "last marking on the gauge" is usually more aspirational than a true indicator of the design limit. Especially for something like an analog pressure sensor, which was almost certainly fabricated by going "okay, how far does this needle move as we drop the sensor 10m into the water? Okay, mark the gauge for that and make the last number whatever fits." As to the disparity - I don't have access to any reliable numbers but it's worth noting that the Germans had both a lot more practice in pushing submarines to the limits, and a lot more *reason* to . Allied submarines in either theatre rarely faced the kind of intensive sub hunting that UBoots had to endure. So I'm willing to believe that USN policy included a serious safety margin whilst KM policy shaved that down, both from neccessity and experience.

Did the Germans ever think about building a decoy u-boat designed not to sink ships, but to shoot down planes? Sort of like Q-ships, but for use against enemy aircraft. Give it an armored tower and deck, and outfit it with several 37mm guns to shoot down patrol craft looking for u-boats to sink.
@chrisburr999 Жыл бұрын
Probably for about 2 minutes. The resources and manpower for a submarine vs a plane would require them to down planes at a unrealistic rate to break even. The allies could (and did) put out more planes than they could hope to soak up. The did up-gun their subs for a while with the idea it was better to fight it out with the planes on the surface, but that didn't work out either. The channel WWII Bombers covers this as well as crash-diving tactics, etc. Highly recommended. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKGwXpZudrh7fNE for example.

Quarky idea! I like it. I'll see what I can do!
@harveywallbanger3123 Жыл бұрын
The wiper blades used rubber, a war critical material, and thus nobody got any replacements after the initial ones got worn out, so the windshield was always filthy. The glass was also non-tempered and tended to crack from one end to the other every time the Jeep hit a pothole. Unless you were getting pelted in the face with rain or gravel it was easier to keep it down.
@paladinsix9285 Жыл бұрын
Glare. Sunlight reflecting off the glass can be detected miles away, just using the "Mk 1" eyeball. Dozen miles with binoculars or other optics. Often the windshield is concealed with a canvas cover when down. We would cover the headlights and rear view mirrors with burlap. Tape over the reflectors and turn signal lights. That was in the 1980's, when I was a Cavalry Scout, using M151A2 quarter-ton trucks (the "Mutt" or "modern" jeep 1960's through 90's).
