Recently I purchaced from ebay a dremel holder that can be attached to the toolpost of a lathe. The problem was that the shank was too thick for my lathe, and as a result the center of the lathe's chuck, wasn't at the same height as the dremel's chuck was. One way, was to sand it down to the desired thickness, but then I remembered that I had an 8mm end mill cutter that could do the job on my lathe. I did it twice because I had to flip it over to take the other half of the shank as you will see on the video.

that way of checking that the piece was true to the chuck with a dial indicator was genius! Good content.

Nice video. Another tool post holder could also have been made using your chuck to drill a hole the same size required for the dremel. Then no shims would be required. Thank for sharing.

yep. a lathe is actually capable of reproducing itself. these are just the ideas I need for milling since all i really need is my dremel and lathe. now i know a quick way to mount the dremel

It a pleasure to see your ideas running through your videos. This one has a chance to be useful to me. I own the same lathe. If you have a solution to add a vertical axle to allow milling on your lathe, please tell us how to do.
@aserta
@aserta 8 жыл бұрын
+WalterCoulede You can remove the cross-slide, add a 90 degree plate, mount the cross slide on the 90 degree plate and voila. Up and down axis. Of course it's far more limited than an actual mill but if you think your cuts, it works. Of course, you will need to build a few parts. Screws, plates for the underside, spacers, and some shims.

+johnnyq90 Our friend, a lathe German is good to fantastic. I have a Chinese, but do not have great accuracy as yours. I'm just not having time to use it, because with constant threats of flooding inside my house, I was forced to take the lathe in my father's house. And it makes 12 days that I was Dad, now I have no more time to almost nothing. Leandro Wagner.

Hi Johnny, I do not know if you could read this. Amazing channel you have here and I watch your videos once a while. this video particularly had my interest as I was wondering if you could use a lathe specified for wood be used for metal.
@dbeierl
@dbeierl 6 жыл бұрын
It would be difficult because lathes intended for wood do not have a movable carriage with cross slide and compound slide to mechanically place the tool in position for the cut. However, watch/clock makers do use very small lathes employing metal gravers in similar fashion to wood turning in miniature.

If you would have drilled the holder on the lathe it would have to be right on center .
@EnglishTurbines
@EnglishTurbines 6 жыл бұрын
You would be far better getting a quick change Toolpost Adaptor. This enables different tools to be kept in their individual holders and the holders have precision height adjusters on them. No needs for bits of shims etc to get your tool heights correct.

Cool video! Look into making yourself a small collet set (like er32) to hold the end mills. I have seen an end mill jump out of a 3 jaw chuck and flt across the shop!!....Also, instead of cutting along the work horizontally like you did, try "drilling out" the waste material with the end of the milling tool, then go back and do a high speed/slow travel finish cut. MUCH easier wear and tare on the Lathe. Subd! HAve fun, G.

Please don't plunge cut with an end mill. Use a drill bit first. Plunge cutting with an end mill should only be done if you have no alternative.
