I remember when I first read JJK and I really love Yuji for some reason. As JJK becomes popular, I see people judge Yuji for being too boring, too weak, and I started to understand why I like Yuji. Yuji isn't gifted, so people belittle him. Yuji is too kind, so people think his ideal is boring. However, just like what you said in the video, no matter how harsh the reality is, Yuji will never give up fighting, and he will never throw away his humanity.

I KNEW IT!! I knew Yuji is a special protagonist bc of his actions. Yuji is one of the protagonist I can resonate with. What I mean by that is I understand his struggles and the pain he had to endure and still keep moving on and fighting back the evil. He is written close to some of us. He isn’t the strongest and not overpowered but this isn’t a reason to give up. He wasn’t able to save the people he cared and had after Nobara‘s death a mental breakdown. Todo came to rescue him as Yuji confirmed that he realized his convictions were actually excuses and felt some how vulnerable but Todo’s words could get through him and he found a reason to stand up and fight again. He needed the mental support. His ideology of helping and saving others who are weak is similar to Geto. While Geto lost himself bc of a traumatic tragedy. Yuji is the one who won’t or doesn’t want to lose himself, his humanity, his altruistic demeanor. And I admire this a lot💜 Thanks for explaining what it means to be a real protagonist. I get that the other sorcerers and curses are ridiculously strong too but that really soured my taste for the character who didn’t really have an interesting personality beyond that in s1. Maybe the manga did it differently or people just forgot about that by the end of the episode but it always stuck with me that he was just a natural born captain America without any training and I rarely ever feared for him in the first season. I wish he was just a regular athletic dude instead because it made him seem like he was just another shonen chosen one or saiyan or something from episode one and that his grandpa was just hiding it from him even on his deathbed. If you want a true struggling protagonist I’m not sure who I’d pick in shonen but Spider-Man is the first character that comes to mind for me

Great vid bro, perfectly describes the appeal of Yuji's character and how perfectly it "fits" the narrative of his verse. Shonen protagonists must always be stronger in battle, and surpass limits reached by the best of their verse, but the beauty of jjk is that the limit was set from the start, and made quite clear the impossibility of the climb. I don't believe Yuji will ever reach the strength of Gojo and Sukuna, yet his persistence to stay averse to change and be an unwavering force of humanity despite all the heartache, struggle and despair, makes his character one of the most compelling I've experienced. he keeps going, like we do, like we must do.

@@tanirbergenmustafa92 perhaps, it's definitely a possibility, and even if it does go that way, I'll still enjoy the time I've spent with the characters and show/manga in general. I think tho with Yuji, he's not optimistic about his future, his life is only worth it's use to others. Despite that, despite knowing he couldn't ever replace gojo or match sukuna, he does his best to be useful, whereas I feel most shounen MC's have the optimism of "I'll just get stronger." Firstly, I want to say the production on this video was clean, eye catching and inspired. I enjoyed the video’s thesis, ‘the “perfect” shounen protagonist needs to drive the action of the story, needs to struggle against the status quo of the setting, can’t be too over powered and embodies the themes of the narrative.’ However, I disagree with your analysis of JJK. On the surface the core theme of JJK is, ‘in order to reach the greatest heights of strength you have to disregard your humanity.’ (simply, the strongest have forsaken/ shed their humanity) and Sukuna seemingly embodies that. I’ve observed the core theme of JJK to be, ‘in order to reach the greatest heights of strength you have to know the essence of yourself’ (simply, the strongest are the most self assured). I believe Sukuna encompasses this theme more accurately as he frequently says he, ‘eats when I want, kill when I want’ alluding to how he does as he pleases because he can, because that’s who he is. Gojo knew who he was, ‘the strongest’, Toji knew who he was, ‘the invisible man’ who had no pride - when he lost against Gojo it was due to his pride and he states how in that moment he forget who he was, ‘a man without pride.’ All these characters knew exactly who they were and no outside voice could dissuade them on their beliefs of who they were. This theme, “unshakeable self assurance = unfathomable strength” is best highlighted in Maki and Yuji (which follows your thesis). With Yuji it was showcased in his fight with Mahito. Throughout the fight Mahito persistently torment Yuji with the state, “You and I are alike” - even though there were additional factors that contributed to Yuji’s abilities being inhibited, Mahito exposed Yuji’s denial of himself and that in turn limited Yuji’s ability. But once Yuji accepted Mahito’s observation as true, he found the resolve to stand against Mahito. Yuji, drew nearer to his essence and gained the strength to stand on par with an unregistered special grade. It goes without saying that this too was reflected in Mahito. Maki further exemplifies the theme of the narrative. When she got her first awakening, it was more of a lore based power up - as jujutsu treats twins as one entity so the curse potential is divided into twins, which in turn hampers the overall curse ability of the individual twins (which is only worsened with a heavenly restriction). Maki’s true awakening was in the culling games, where she had sumo spars with that one sumo guy. The result of those spars lead to Maki drawing nearer to her true essence which made her stronger even before the Zen’in massacre. There are other great examples like Kenjaku but hopefully this is enough to explain my point on how the he true theme of JJK is how ‘strength is attain through self discovery which in turn can develop into unshakeable self assurance and that manifests unfathomable strength’.

Yuji has to be the worst example of a struggling protagonist, mostly because he's not "A wrench that stops the machine". He's a cog, he's always been a cog, specially considering the recent chapters. He began the series being inhuman, he continued the series as someone who followed the words of someone else because thinking for himself didn't feel like the right thing to do, and the moment he begins to think for himself, the entire plot of the series shifts to put him aside. "He doesn't have a get out of jail card" yet, every time he faced a wall someone came along with a jackhammer. "He goes against the point of the series" yet he embodies perfectly what i means to be inhuman from the very start. "He struggles" yet the series had to power creep the hell out of everyone to keep up with yuji, who was strong from the start and proved every single time he was on screen to be the exception to every rule. Him being your perfect protagonist when the story is barely about him is just... Sad. There's so many WAY better examples than one of the most disappointing things to ever happen to the shonen jump, and yet you placed all of your faith on it; just so gege spits on your face as he did with the entire fandom. I like the way you speak tho, very entertaining.

@@JohnnyStar sorry about all my comments earlier, in this thread and the other one. I was off my anxiety meds and I was being a dick because my brain was scattered, shouldn't have been that toxic and I wanna apologize. I wrote a really long comment about my thoughts but accidentally deleted it :| so to put it as briefly as I can, I think that Itadori is meant to be the same type of guiding north star for humanity's values that Ichigo or Tanjiro are; the reality us, most of us have more in common with Sukuna or Sensui or Madara than we do with heroes. We feel, we want, we let our actions be driven by the intersection of our feelings and wants, and that's how we live. Simple. Itadori, like Luffy, like Kenshin, like Naruto, and so on, are all different in personality but the same in ethos, like unique colors of the rainbow that ultimately still have the same warmth that all light has. They push back against our individualistic, hedonistic, power-obsessed world and stand firm in the only force in existence that can save us. We think moody, tragic stories are the height of mature storytelling, but imo it's being a hero that will always be the quintessence of avant garde in this fucked up world. Some people are tired of the whole "my nakama, power of friendship" trope but as someone who's suffered in my own life, I still see that cliche as the most powerful act of defiance we can engage in during our short stint on this rotating rock. When Itadori hits Mahito with a final black flash, or when Goku turns SSJ for his best friend, or when Simon beats up fucking God, I feel the same revelatory optimism. And to me, that's the most important part of these characters that they all have in common. They're all the same, and imo that's what makes them special.

Either Naruto winning a fight or saving someone. In Yujis case, everytime Sukuna revives him, it was for Sukunas sake and people died or got hurt for it. Yuji would never say he was happy Sukuna “saved his life”, he at multiple times just wish they both died. That’s actually kind of his goal, to die so no one has been hurt by Sukuna again. I think you missed that Also, i know you feel strongly about your opinions but going around saying people have “bad opinions” because you disagree ain’t a good look

Deku just doesn’t feel like the struggler protagonist, less that Naruto, especially once he figured out Full Cowling as from there, the underdog status he was known for was lost through his pretty gradual progression of competency with him winning more and more fights without him ever being punished for his choices

haven't finished the video. bro mentions the perfect protaganist, "THE STRUGGLER PROTAGINIST". There's only one answer, lets see what his is. EDIT: after finishing the video i must i am happy to see he did mention the correct answer, even if he was off the table because of the focus of the subject matter. and i must say i do agree with his choice for the ideal struggler protagonist in regards to shonen.

I think everyone u mentioned fits a protagonist (as a writer ) has to have a flaw just as much as they need to have a goal (and motive) without those your characters is boring(just as boring maybe even more boring than not having a risk)

@@koro1655 Stop embarassing yourself bro 💀 Yuji was supposed to die in like chapter 5 or ep 5 but the mangaka realived him with the fattest plot armour feat since dbz cause jjk got popular and eveyone like yuji too much. Literally all the depth you think These character has is straight up head cannon. the author dosent know wtf he is doing with the characters half the time, literally came forward and said he just kill of characters when he dosent know what to do with harder which was blatantly obvious with nobara. Yall just love to meat ride and thats showing hard. If you have to side line your literal main character to make others shine you have quite literally failed as a writer lmao, take aot fmab one piece or any well written show, all them have a better side cast than jjk but their mc is actually relavant LMAO.

Great video, however, one flaw is that you said that deku's core character was never challenged by the story. Which is just insanely false, he originally wanted to save people with a fearless smile, then that was challenged by the sports festival where he realized that "giving it his all, and being the deku who always tries his best", then during the final exams, his ideaology shifted a bit towards bakugo's with him wanting to include always winning. During the overhaul arc, he told mirio he wanted to be a hero strong enough so that no one had to worry. Then Deku started to feel sympathy during the gentle criminal arc, where his ideology was slightly challenged by gentle criminal. During the war arc, Deku had his core character of being a hero flipped upside down by shigaraki, shigaraki revealed the flaws of hero society and everything wrong with it, and deku became the person who wanted to save even the little child inside of shigaraki. In the vigilante arc, He trully realized how many issues hero society had swept under the rug, with lady nagant and such. And his main ideology of always trying his best started to be his major flaw, as he wanted to preserve the smiles of his friends. He worked himself to near exhaustion as the HUGE responsibility of OFA crushed him. But his friends showed him that he didnt have to be the only one carrying that burden. He squared his shoulders and kept moving into the final war arc, where Deku is challenged again by shigaraki, but realizes that HE WILL NOT forget about the flaws of hero society and all the stuff being swept under the rug, and decides that he wont stop fighting until he shredded that rug with his own hands. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STOP SLEEPING ON DEKU

I'm new to jjk but yet yuji is my favorite because I can relate to him because we're both goofy we both wanna protect people and what even though he doesn't have that many techniques he is still the goat of jjk
@violet_franz8 ай бұрын
Your definition of "perfect protagonist" is a bit silly. It's less "I'm looking for a perfect protagonist. Ah, itadori yuji fulfills that role" and more like "I'm looking for a jujutsu kaisen protagonist. Ah, itadori yuji fulfills that role." Yuji is pretty much perfect for the themes of jjk, and that's it. Put him in basically any other series, and he will not work as the MC. And there's nothing wrong with that. But you tried to paint Yuji as the universally perfect MC, which is just not true.
@JohnnyStar8 ай бұрын
I think you're taking the "Perfect" aspect a bit too literally. The conversation evolves outside of just being perfect overall and more fitting of the "Protagonistes" or Struggler Protag model. To me, which I try to make clear since I'm not the authority on character writing just stating how I feel, Yuji is a perfect representation of the struggler protagonist. I even state how someone could look at Midoriya as the perfect protag for his story too. He just doesn't embody the Struggler Protag to me, which is why I put Perfect in quotations
@violet_franz8 ай бұрын
@JohnnyStar Oh, I see. I guess I got the impression that you believed the struggler protagonist was the perfect type of protagonist.

I like that even though they weren't your personal definition of a perfect protagonist, you still chose to focus on the positives and recognized that it's a difference of storytelling rather than poor writing. It's a very refreshing take and I wish more people analyzed media this way.

You give an extremely good dive into jujutsu kaisan and Yuji as a character, I never picked up any of those things when I watched due to some things I will talk about. Jujustu Kaisan as an incredible premise and theme that differentiates it from typcial shonen. since, I, and lot of other people missed this, I think there is an issue in the way its done. its such a great concept, but I feel like it was burried under a large amount of typical shonen activities that made me forget, and I personally think that I needed a reminder. I think this happens as a result of jujutsu kaisan largely taking popular elements of others. I'm gonna talk about that junpei one, which I largely was reminded of Fullmetal alchemists Ed and Nina situation. ed and nina was only an episode in FMAB, but the junpei arc definitely takes a while as it also characterises mahito. but at the same time, theres this huge school with characters we know but aren't introduced to. You can see Yuji's morals being tested which is a good thing, but I feel like this sort of event should have happened later in the series, maybe remove kyoto goodwill arc entirely and slap this as jjk s1 part 2 since that arc is almost pointless in its overall run. I wont continue, and I do think I should rewatch the show for a fresh perspective. But its as I was trying to say, great ideas, just buried under some largely not important things. or things that should be altered. but your point about Yuji is very keenly observed and something I almost completely forgot about in the second season.
