If you love rock memoirs, particularly of the 60s, read Joe Boyd's outstanding book "White Bicycles."

Read it.Brilliant. He wasn't too fond of Trevor Lucas, if I remember right.

Yes! His story about trying to get a sandwich is so evocative of the British mindset of the time... and, er, now.

Joe has led the most amazing life . I am a good way thru 'White Bicycles' ..what a great read. I believe he has another memoir coming out soon called 'The Roots of Rhythm Remain'. Btw looking forward to the Richard Thompson (with band) UK tour starting in May. Happy Birthday RT just turned 75 ! 😊

Thank you,Joe...i know you always somehow managed to steer them in the right direction,be it dylan or whatever else they chose to do, it was you that gave them that initial nudge. It wouldn't have been the same without your input. Kudos, and respect!❤👍

For many years I was part of a group of musicians who played for a local annual Robert Burns celebration in northern California. Also in the show was Ron Wilson, famed drummer and player of the classic solo from the Surfaris' "Wipe Out". One night, when talking with him about musicians we liked, he asked me to name a favorite drummer. Names like Neil Peart and Bill Bruford ran through my head, but I quickly thought of another drummer I liked that might resonate more with him and said "Dave Mattocks". Ron smiled and said "good choice".

Thank you John Peel Archive for publishing this. Fascinating insight from the producer into a little bit of rock history that is unknown to most, but pretty important in its own way, and of huge interest to fans of this music.

Me and my pal got talking to a couple being as we were the only 4 people on a deserted midnight NY subway in April 2017. Turned out the woman was JB's cousin who ensured us he was in good fettle. Such an important man in British underground music with his Witchseason Production company back in the day. And Dave Mattacks is an amazing drummer from the same school of 'less is actually feckin' more' that Jim Keltner also attended

Someone has to remind Joe Boyd that being Canadian is being American -- Canada is in North America. And those musicians in The Band (Canadian except for Levon Helm) were playing a rural American based music. That's what they always set out to do. As for Fairport -- yeah, they could've been the English version of "Big Pink." Why not? They were innovative, motivated musicians & excellent. Boyd, of course, played a big role in that as well. Great producers will do that...they are key to the "sound" created.

You’re being a bit obtuse. Robbie Robertson wouldn’t disagree with Boyd. They were 4/5 Canadian. The Hawkins-Helm (American) roots of the band was essential. The nationality means little, but it is interesting and correct.

Yes, It bugs me, too, that e en Canadians and Mexicans do not regard themselves as Americans. It is a fact of geography.

Damn I don't know about all this drumming thing, nothing against the other drummer but I think the drumming on Unhalfbricking was so much better. "Wanna be jazz guy", ok man...
@wolfetom105 жыл бұрын
If you listen to their previous album, Martin Lamble's drumming is really good. But I agree with Joe Boyd -- Dave Mattacks brought the right sensibility for Fairport's move into English folk rock.
