I don't know if anyone ever reads these. But like so many John Prine helped me through so many dark times. I have so much sympathy and empathy. For his family. I lost my wife at 49. John Prine helped me in so many ways , now I cannot help his loved ones in any way. He sure is missed. A good man.

My wife and I walked outside of the Akron Civic Theater one Sunday in the mid 90’s. It was mid day and no one was on the street. This guy passed us on the empty street. I said to my wife I think that’s John Prine! After a few seconds I turned and yelled JOHN! He turned and walked back towards us. After a few seconds of hello and introductions he looked at us and said. I can’t find a way to get in to the theater. We helped him find the back entrance where Arlo Guthrie had just pulled in. They were co headlining the show that night. Some things you never forget no matter how small they may seem.

I don’t know the meaning of life but I’m pretty sure it’s in a John Prine song. 🖤 He got old, but he never got old. RIP to the only songwriter that’s inspired me and got me through as much as Bob Dylan. John Prine has been my beacon of hope through this virus, living in New York, California and just most of the last two decades. He was the one musician who felt like they were there with me through the best and worst moments of my life. No one else could singularly personify the joys and pain of life in so few words. I had to wipe tears from eyes two days ago listening to Lake Marie (the live session at West 54th obviously, the middle verse of you were wondering) Then I had to question why a song lyric, that wasn’t supposed to be sad, had me weeping dead sober in the middle of the day. Just because it was beautiful. I would be more shocked and surprised if the writing wasn’t on the wall. He recorded what has to the best last album to grace this world. All in all, I really just feel kinda lucky that we got to spend time on the same earth as this guy. All the snow has turned to water. RIP

I first listened to John Prine in 1970 after my brother came back from Viet Nam and wore the grooves out of "John Prine". I was 11 years-old at the time and was completely blown away by the poetry and musicality of that album. I promptly started playing guitar and learned to play pretty much every song on the album. I then bought "Diamonds in the Rough" and still start out my open-mic set with "Souvenirs". If that song does not move you, then buddy, you don't have a pulse...

At 11 I wouldn't have gotten it. I was 15 and cutting tobacco for a few days and every day after work this college junior drove me home in a Camaro. I don't remember his name but he introduced me to John Prine. "You like music? Check out this cat." He hit his cassette deck I heard "Please Don't Bury Me" and "Dear Abby". I got my attention. Then "Sam Stone" and "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore" rocked me. Challenged, I had to step back and THINK. I never learned to play anything but the stereo but Prine's music made me aware of the songwriter and especially those who were poets or storytellers. If you toss in Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes, Nancy Griffith, Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, and about anyone who breathed Del Rio air you will see some of those poets that I started looking for and listening to. Where do play?

""The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." "Tree of Forgiveness: is a hell of a tribute to a hell of a career and he should be getting $1500 a ticket, imo. If you can't get enough of JP's music, learn to play a half dozen or so of his songs. Back in 1976 or so I used to go to a pub in the middle of the Kent countryside on a Sunday evening to see a great band who played every week. I was familiar with most of their material but they played song called Souvenirs a couple of times . I asked the lead singer who wrote it and he said " The best songwriter you've never heard of ,his name is John Prine. The next day I bought an L.P. of his and been a huge fan ever since. Great, great songs and a great man. I saw him at The London Palladium years ago and although it's a pretty big theatre he made it seem like his own front room. When I get to Heaven I'm going to shake God's hand Thank Him for more blessings Than one man can stand Then I'm gonna get a guitar And start a Rock and Roll band Check into a swell hotel AIint the Afterlife grand. Thanks John, for being friend for the last 45 years. RIP

They used to consider him the "new Dylan," but come on; I can't argue Dylan's genius, but they are complete opposites. Prine doesn't have a cynical bone in his body. His genius is his empathy.

Congratulations, John. Although you’re a million miles away (playing for Angels, no doubt), you are still forever in each and every one of our hearts. In your own special way, you have reached right into us and touched us in a way that we didn’t even know was possible. You were ‘sangin’ ‘bout something,’ but we (the hip ones!) recognized that deep within those layers, you were really sangin’ ‘bout something else altogether. And we collectively thought- “Damn! He’s saying EXACTLY what I FEEL! How does he know???” That gift or talent or where-with-all is something that ‘can’t be boughten.’ You got it, John. And you gave it to us. And they’re STILL recognizing you for it. You must have been a great hang.

I partied hard just like John back in those days and just like John had to give it up. May you rest in peace John and sing in the heavens forevermore. My introduction to John Prine was not from the radio or from critics, but from hearing about how revered he was by other songwriters, both contemporaries and those who came after him. He was kind of the songwriter's songwriter, someone who just got it and knew how to make a listener feel understood and less alone in the world. My only regret is that I didn't start listening to him sooner than I did.
